Talk:List of Guild Wars 1 skins

From Guild Wars 2 Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

I think that it would've been nice to have a list of all the guild wars 1 skins in guild wars 2

Though I am terrible at editing wikis

It would just be nice to have a link to this page from all of the skins that are in both games, so that people who are in the mood for some nostalgia can find other instances of repeated skins

If I have gone about this wrongly, then please help me start a page as I have described

I wanted to see a list of all of the skins that have been carried over, but I couldnt find it, so I tried to make one.

This is absolutely a needed page, ill fix your editing. 184.60.235.234 18:52, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
Sorry but this page is unneeded, if one would desire something along the lines of this it'd be preferred to have a category instead of a special page dedicated to the skins of the game's first installment. --you like that don't you..The Holy Dragons 18:57, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
tbh you could generate a page for any weapons using the {{gww}} template. The only relevance it has to gw2wiki is trivia, so there's no reason for an actual article.--Relyk 19:02, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
Then add a category tag to each page, either way a list of these is very useful for GW1 weapon fans 184.60.235.234
It's not relevant to gw2wiki though, that's something you'd put on gww for the "GW1 weapon fans". I don't really care either way.--Relyk 19:23, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
Actually, as a suggestion per Template talk:Gww#Restrictions on this template, this would be a "Weapons" subsection on a list of articles with relevant GWW articles.--Relyk 19:27, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
Here would be an example: Guild Wars articles‎--Relyk 20:11, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

Needs sorting out[edit]

Though it is essentially ready for deletion, the comments above made me wonder if there is a broader desire amongst Guild Wars fans to have a list/category/article for Guild Wars skins making their return in Guild Wars 2. And if so, in what format will this be done? Or will it be better off being linked to from GWW to GW2W? - Infinite - talk 09:42, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

I'd prefer just a category be manually added to the following pages:
Al'ir'aska - voltaic spear
Anura - Frog scepter
Bow of the White Hart - Ivory bow
Breath of Flame - wingblade sword
Claws of the Desert - salient daggers
Crystalline Blade / Zap - Crystalline Blade
Deathwish - bone staff
Delusion - jeweled staff
Dragonspine - serrated spear
Dreadwing - Mammoth axe
Droknar's Recurve Bow - half moon
Hypnotic Scepter - hypnotic scepter
Faithful - spiked axe
Final Curse - dead bow
Firebringer - fiery gladius
Imryldyeen / The Legend - Chrysocola Staff
Infinite Wisdom - earth scroll
Jora's Defender - round shield
Kryta's Embrace - tall shield
Kymswarden - long sword
Labrys - crude axe (canthan)
Maw of the Damned - pyroclastic axe
Razorstone - razorstone/sephis axe
Shield of the Wing & The Chosen - shield of the wing
Spark (weapon) - sai
The Colossus - magmas arm / War Hammer (lion)
The Punisher - victo's maul
The Ugly Stick - the ugly stick
Unspoken Curse - flamberge
Winged Spatha - spatha
We could add a link to the gww version and vice versa if we wanted to, but I'd prefer getting the category done first. Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 10:21, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
Redirect gw1 skin names to appropriate weapon pages--Relyk 13:35, 20 December 2012 (UTC)
Redirecting skin names doesn't make sense, because who's going to know which skin names to search for? I do support the category, though. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 16:08, 20 December 2012 (UTC)

Purpose of page[edit]

I am not sure of the article's original purpose. Here's what I'd like to see the wiki do:

  1. Label a GW2 skin/weapon/armor article if it matches an equivalent skin in GW1.
  2. Make it easy to find such GW2 skins.
  3. Make it easy to find the GW2W article that relates to a specific skin from GW1, i.e. if I know the name of the GW1 skin, find its equivalent for GW2W.

This page could easily handle (3) and almost take care of (2). There are other ways to accomplish the same goals, including forcing players to look at the GW1 wiki. 75.37.20.45 00:33, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Edge cases[edit]

Some skins I think look similar to GW1 skins, but which are different enough that I'm not willing to add them to the article without input:

  1. Dragonhunter's Gauntletgw1:Dragon Gauntlets. Similar name, similar dragon's-head-strapped-to-the-wrist-with-spiky-finger-caps design. On the other hand, the GW2 version is more "realistic" and only has the skull on one arm. I'm 50/50 on whether it deserves to be added.
  2. Gnarled Walking Staffgw1:Traveler's Walking Stick. The GW2 version has a green crystal and glowy bits, but the overall shape of the wooden stick is very similar, as are the names. As a HoM skin, there's also precedent for it to be based on a GW1 weapon.
  3. Shoulder Scarfgw1:Stylish Scarves. This one got added into the article already, and I'm okay with keeping it there since on the whole I feel the similarities are strong, but the GW2 version is wrapped differently and lacks tassels.
  4. Reading Glassesgw1:Spectacles. I mean. They're glasses. Pretty generic concept. Probably just a coincidence.

Honestly, by the arguments placed on scarf, the Zodiac weapons should undoubtably be removed. They may share names, but the designs are vastly different. And one would add to the list Grenth's Hood and Deathwish (3 skulls+spine versus 6 skulls). Arguably more.
I would add Gnarled Walking Staff - aside from the obviously similar name, the only HoM skin not based on something GW1 is the pistol (though I have always been left wondering: why no rifle, spear, trident, or harpoongun in HoM?) Konig (talk) 16:38, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
Fair point about the Zodiacs. I decided to add all of them because some of them are definitely based on the originals -- the shield is particularly obvious -- which implies that the full set must have been at the very least inspired by the originals. I wouldn't complain if the less obvious ones were removed, though, especially the axe. And like I said, I'm okay with the scarf, I'm just flagging it as a possible edge case. :)
As for the HoM, we do have a rifle! So it's just the aquatics that are missing, which is fairly typical for ANet. --Idris (talk) 16:48, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
I cannot believe I forgot about that rifle. I feel ashamed and must commit seppuku. One can tell I do not play warrior or engi that often, though the new deadeye should have given me time to look at rifle skins more...) Konig (talk) 17:39, 9 February 2018 (UTC)
Lol, dw, I was surprised to see there was a longbow when I was going through the table earlier. :p Anyway, it seems we agree on the Gnarled staff, so I'm going to go ahead and add that to the article. --Idris (talk) 17:54, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

Ceremonial Weapons[edit]

Hello everybody. I have noticed that many of the Ceremonial weapons are the same as Imperial Dragon weapons but with different embellishments. I am currently debating whether or not to add them to the list. For reference, look at the Ceremonial Bulwark and compare it to the Imperial Dragon Shield. --Teletric.3821 (talk) 14:31, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

This happened to get brought up in Discord today, so I took a look through. These are my personal opinions.
So I'd say adding axe, shield, and Ceremonial Greatsword linking to Imperial Dragon Sword is entirely reasonable; focus, hammer, spear, and dagger are more grey-area; and bow, staff, and scepter probably not. - Tanetris (talk) 20:04, 19 August 2021 (UTC)
