First release[edit]

The app was released a few hours ago to the public. Before we announce it openly on official or unoffical channels, we want to make sure that it is actually tested by more than just two people. So if you have an Android device, please give it a try and leave feedback. Thanks! poke | talk 18:17, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

"A Windows Phone client is not unlikely."[edit]

Yay?

(How not-unlikely is it? :P) pling User Pling sig.png 18:36, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Well, I'm personally quite interested in the Windows Store development and depending how easy cross-device development is, a phone client might be possible there. I could definitely imagine my first "test app" to be some wiki client :P Also I haven't really decided against a Windows phone as a successor to my current phone yet, so if I get one, the likeliness increases a lot. But that's just me, if you want to work on it, start and I'll help you ^^ poke | talk 19:18, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
I am considering working on an iOS version now that I have a macbook through work again, but I don't have an iOS device to test on and an Apple Developer account costs $100 a year so I'd probably ask for donations. Felix Omni Signature.png 19:42, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
I could theoretically work on a MonoTouch app, but the license would probably not allow that and I wouldn't have an account to publish it through (not using the one from work :P). And Objective-C is not happening with me.. :P poke | talk 20:02, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
MonoTouch bad, native good. Felix Omni Signature.png 17:24, 7 February 2013 (UTC)
MonoTouch is pretty much native. It’s the identical framework, just accessed from a different (better) language level. poke | talk 20:32, 7 February 2013 (UTC)

Main page[edit]

After beta testing ends, will you add a link from the main page and/or left-side support box? I think this is an important enough tool that it should be added there, even without an iPhone or Windows version. 75.37.20.148 19:40, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Yeah, something like that will possibily happen. Stephane also ensured us to announce it through official channels; and reddit would probably work well too.. poke | talk 20:03, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Relyk feedback[edit]

The TOCright on User:Relyk does not like vertical view, the same result as making the browser window narrow, which is a problem for phones in general. As seen on the TOC, numbered lists gets bulleted. The app doesn't generate wikitable class for tables although {{STDT}} works fine as expected. When I use the search button on my Android keyboard instead of the search bar for a page that doesn't exist, it generates an error instead of an empty Search Results page. I like it generating an error so you don't have to navigate back from the empty search results page. Don't know if the results are generated from Special:Search, but it could include page title matches. The GW2 image in the top left can link to the main page. I like how the categories are handled. You can't access any page in the Special namespace. I don't think you need to in a read-only version. File:"Fear Me!".png gave me a picture of a British dog first time, trying again gave me the correct image lol. The galleries just set the images in white space. The {{spoilers}} tag doesn't span 65% width correctly. It's probably an issue with not being able to use expandable tables. The semicolon symbol used for formatting (";<text>") doesn't bold and resize the text, fortunately it still creates a break. I like the read-only focus, where you don't bother with unnecessary wiki-related information.--Relyk ~ talk > 20:00, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

How did you know the dog was British? Felix Omni Signature.png 20:03, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
It probably showed the icon for "Guard!". —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 20:43, 5 February 2013 (UTC)
@Relyk: Do you not like the way the gallery images are handled? Felix Omni Signature.png 04:29, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Cache[edit]

Just then, the app crashed after clicking on the downed skills article link to request the latest version. I assume this is a cache-related issue. - Infinite - talk 10:45, 8 February 2013 (UTC)

Could you try to reproduce the crash and write down the steps you followed? Felix Omni Signature.png 15:11, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Yes, that wasn't very hard to do (at all :P). I navigated to List of downed skills and hits the "request the most recent version" link at the top of the page. To confirm it's not a problem with the link or the article, this happens on any cache-refreshing link. - Infinite - talk 15:41, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Interesting. I'll look into it tonight. Felix Omni Signature.png 17:17, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Exception is thrown in onLink because the regexp does not match (because it is no /wiki/article name link but one over index.php). First we should make sure, the find() actually returns true; and then revamp the whole link detection ^^ poke | talk 17:57, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
Now you have 100 problems--Relyk ~ talk > 18:45, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
I just posted that on Dr ishmael's talk page like a couple hours ago. And dammit Poke, no fair fixing stuff when I'm still at work. Felix Omni Signature.png 20:18, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
I think you should be lucky that it isn't a cache issue, personally. :P - Infinite - talk 20:34, 8 February 2013 (UTC)
I didn’t fix it; I just investigated within 2 minutes of my precious time. Could fix it later today if you didn’t do it yet :P poke | talk 15:28, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
I didn't do it yet because I went to a League of Legends party instead. I regret nothing. Felix Omni Signature.png 17:41, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
Sounds familiar; except that I didn’t go to some nerd party but a birthday party of a good friend instead… :P poke | talk 01:45, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
The level of beer consumption in Germany is at its lowest since 1990. Felix Omni Signature.png 02:00, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
No idea where you get that idea from, or how it is possibly related to anything. poke | talk 12:46, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
It was in Time magazine, but more importantly we drank more beer at the LoL party than your entire country did in a year. Felix Omni Signature.png 15:24, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
Yeaaaaahhh, right. poke | talk 16:05, 11 February 2013 (UTC)
This is fixed. Felix Omni Signature.png 03:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Rotation[edit]

When changing the page rotation from horizontal to vertical or vice versa, the app will reset to show the english main page, regardless of the current page (or changed start language). --Tera 20:53, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. I am pretty sure I know what the problem is. Felix Omni Signature.png 21:50, 9 February 2013 (UTC)
To elaborate on that a little bit, Android's default behavior when a configuration change occurs (ie rotation) is to destroy and recreate the current activity, which results in it restarting the WebView with the default language and main page. I had disabled this behavior in the past, but I suspect that I accidentally re-introduced it recently when I added a layout swap on rotation. It should be a straightforward fix. Felix Omni Signature.png 00:48, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
As it turns out, the problem is in the layout swap itself- specifically, setting a new language adapter. Felix Omni Signature.png 02:22, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
This is fixed. Felix Omni Signature.png 03:26, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

questions[edit]

is there a way to log in and edit? also where is the side nave bar or is there not one?- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 00:55, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

No, the app is for reading only- editing isn't supported, so logging in wouldn't really serve a purpose. The side nav bar is unnecessary because it's mostly Special pages and editing-related things, but as far as Main Page, news, and etc goes you can add those to your Favorites. Felix Omni Signature.png 02:30, 11 February 2013 (UTC)

Note on updating[edit]

It can take a few hours for a new version of an app to appear in Google Play, so please be patient if the new version isn't available yet. Felix Omni Signature.png 03:31, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

apple-touch-icon.png and apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png files[edit]

Hi there,

We noticed a while ago that the files apple-touch-icon.png and apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png were missing on our wikis. We're not sure what exactly what they're supposed to be for but we were wondering whether it was related to mobile access of the wikis. Since you've been designing this mobile app, we were wondering if you had any insight into that?

Thanks! The preceding unsigned comment was added by Stephane Lo Presti (talk • contribs) at 18:58, 26 February 2013 (UTC).

From the names, they sound like they're used by Apple devices. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 01:25, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
To my knowledge, those icons have nothing to do with this app. Maybe they're part of default Mediawiki mobile browsing functionality. Felix Omni Signature.png 01:42, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I'm wondering whether you came by them while developing the app, even if your app is Android (I wish you had an iOS one ;) ). But it looks like it's not been an issue at all for you. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 01:47, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
You just might get that wish. Felix Omni Signature.png 01:57, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Now I'm listening ;) --Stephane Lo Presti talk 02:03, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Well I have a Macbook through work and just this weekend I bought an iPod Touch to learn iOS development on (other than making phone calls and GPS it's functionally identical to an iPhone), and I'll mostly be teaching myself by adapting GW2Wiki. If people want an iPad version, though, I will probably have to ask for donations to buy one. Felix Omni Signature.png 02:33, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
If you program an iPhone app, it can sometimes be visible on iPad (it displays small and you can double the size). You may want to check right away about publishing app on the app store before you start developping, as this can sometimes be the tricky part. Good luck with this project ^^ --Stephane Lo Presti talk 01:18, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
Those icons are used by Safari on iOS to display the icon on the homescreen if you add a link to the website to it. Safari searches automatically for them, just like browsers do for favicons. poke | talk 06:53, 27 February 2013 (UTC)
Thanks poke! --66.162.136.17 00:51, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Going public[edit]

We've gotten about 500 unique downloads over the last few weeks (which is incredible considering all we did was make a wiki page), and after I fixed the initial bugs reported by Infinite, Tera, and one I found, no other users have brought any to our attention. There are some good feature suggestions from a few users which we will definitely consider for the future, but in the meantime I would say the app is almost ready to get some public attention. I'll be updating the app once more to include some xhdpi graphic resources for tablet screens in the next couple of days, and after that I'm going to ask Stephane to promote the app through various social media. Thanks for your feedback, and please keep it coming. Felix Omni Signature.png 04:20, 1 March 2013 (UTC)

Do you want a sitenotice as well? pling User Pling sig.png 16:53, 1 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes, if everyone is okay with that. Felix Omni Signature.png 06:32, 2 March 2013 (UTC)
Everyone is okay with that. - Tanetris 07:36, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

The v1.0.2 update has been published, so I'm gonna go bug Stephane. Felix Omni Signature.png 22:44, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

A better search functionality?[edit]

I've been using the Android Wiki app for a few weeks now, and it's quite lovely. Very responsive, quick, and I haven't come across any significant bugs. The only issue I have with it currently is the search functionality, which seems quite limited.

Searching only seems to like exact page matches, including case. For example:

Mystic clover returns a page not found. This is the same for any multi word searches where the first word is capitalized and subsequent words aren't.

Trying simply Clover or even clover also fail to find any mention of a clovers in the wiki, but they're there.

The dropdown for a search is very nice, but it's limited to a very small set of results. Entering Mystic will list several other Mystic items, but Mystic Clover is off the list.

Is there any work planned for implementing a better search for the app? Being able to pop in any word, whether it is in proper case, or matches a wiki page specifically, and get a list of results as you'd get on the regular wiki would be nice, and would really open the app up for users who don't know a specific item, or page to search for. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sak102010 (talk • contribs) at 01:57, 29 March 2013 (UTC).

"Mystic clover" generate the "Page not found" and then redirects to the correct Mystic Clover page. Pretty sure it's just how the pp handles redirects.--Relyk ~ talk > 03:56, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Hmm, when I get the "Error: Article does not exist" box, I get no redirect to any other page. Honor of the waves gives me the error, and doesn't redirect, but Honor of the Waves takes me right to the page. --Sak102010 > 05:47, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
"Honor of the waves" isn't a redirect page, it has to be created as a redirect page first. The app doesn't use Special pages such as Special:Search, so people will have to be vigilant with redirects or use the search dropdown.--Relyk ~ talk > 06:21, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
You are right, the search in the app is currently very limited. As far as I am aware it only uses the OpenSearch functionality you get when you begin typing in the search box on the website—so it’s basically just a completion. A proper search is definitely planned for one of the following releases. poke | talk 16:43, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
Oh, I think I see what you're saying, now, Relyk. In order for a search to redirect from a page not found to its proper page it has to have a redirect page specifically created for that redirect? Seems tedious, given the short-staffing that the Wiki currently faces. It also doesn't solve the problem of popping in a search term, such as clover by itself, and getting some kind of list of results that a user can sift through to find what they're looking for.
Anyway, I love the app, it's absolutely fantastic and I'm glad you guys are working on it and planning on its continued improvement. I hope to be able to contribute (with my limited wiki skills) to the wiki overall as time permits. Right now I still have a lot to learn apparently.  :) --Sak102010 > 20:42, 29 March 2013
Thanks for bringing this up; as Poke said, the app's search functionality is very basic right now. But I will look into the the OpenSearch API and see if there's a way to relax case sensitivity at the very least. Felix Omni Signature.png 15:22, 2 April 2013 (UTC)

Hey guys, you should rate the app[edit]

That would be really good of you to do. Positive ratings and reviews boost visibility. Negative reviews are okay too I guess, they tell us what needs to be improved. Felix Omni Signature.png 19:48, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

If you have actual suggestions that would make you leave negative ratings we would appreciate though if you instead tell us first so we can fix it before you vote ;) poke | talk 20:23, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, negative ratings are super uncool. Felix Omni Signature.png 01:26, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

5000 downloads[edit]

The app broke 5000 downloads on August 31st. That's something of a milestone in the Google Play store- it bumps the download range from 1000-5000 to 5000-10,000. Hooray! Felix Omni Signature.png 02:53, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Awesome! :) -- My Talk Lacky 18:59, 4 September 2013 (UTC)

Error: No Connection[edit]

Hello, I do not know if any of the developers are reading this page but I thought I'd give it a try: I really like the app but recently it has been unable to connect to the internet despite the device having no problem connecting for any other app. Looking in the play store that seems to be a common problem and not just my old phone being weird. So, any chance for a look into this? Winterbay (talk) 15:26, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
