The Elder Dragon Color Orbs made their appearance during an approximately 20-second sequence that was part of a cinematic presented as part of the Living story called The Machine.

It has been inferred that:

• The sequence represents how the Elder Dragons maintain the magical balance of Tyria by absorbing magical energy when active then gradually releasing that magical energy when dormant.
• Each colored orbs represents one of the Elder Dragons and the ordering of the orbs' movement/pulsations may correspond to their last awakening dates.
• The awakening of Deep sea dragon is estimated between 1121 AE and 1164 AE, based on inferred order of the Blue orb. However, the first suspected influence was documented by Quaggans in 1275 AE.
