Template talk:Effect
Can we have a way to add the description?[edit]
Maybe like {{effect|blabla|desc=y}}. Thanks. --Alad 21:43, 2 May 2013 (UTC)
- We would have an {{effect description}} template and use that in the hover text. We would never require a parameter to show/hide the description. This would be done in {{skill fact}} by the way.--Relyk ~ talk > 01:18, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Hmm. I meant when listing the effect in normal text, not as part of an infobox. You can now list its name with its icon before it. It would be nice if one could also optionally list its description right after it, as in a bulleted list of effects, for example. --Alad 06:52, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- We do that separately with the aforementioned template, just like skills and traits. *{{effect|<effect>}} - {{effect description|<effect>}}--Relyk ~ talk > 06:54, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- But... Template: effect description does not exist? (see Invulnerability) ^^ --Alad 07:05, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Of course, no one's made it.--Relyk ~ talk > 07:22, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- You can cheat and use skill icon and skill description templates since all it does is grab the properties :P--Relyk ~ talk > 07:47, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Just remember that skill icon "crops" the icon on-the-fly. —Dr Ishmael 12:54, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

- Yeah, but if you used skill icon on Bleeding, for example... Bleeding. —Dr Ishmael 15:20, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
- Works, thanks! (Although would have been more efficient to just put a desc parameter rather than having to retype the whole thing again.) --Alad 18:07, 3 May 2013 (UTC)
SMW[edit]
any particular reason why this isn't using SMW? -Chieftain Alex 09:49, 31 May 2014 (UTC)
- I don't know, but I just went maverick and changed it. —Dr Ishmael 21:49, 10 July 2014 (UTC)
Update[edit]
Removed the value on the image parameter and changed it to icon. {{effect icon}} handles icons and stacks where you want to generate just the icon. The name of the effect is guaranteed to be the page you want to visit. Both the icon and wikilink should be to the page. The link parameter is also redundant, you want the name of the effect clearly identified with its icon and effect description. For pages with qualifiers, we cleanly use the canonical name for the link text. I moved the stacks parameter to the second parameter to reduce wordiness and intuitiveness. The two parameters are kept for backwards compatibility. The tooltip displays the effect description instead of the page name. Unlike the effect icon, the name of the effect is displayed as a link and we can stick other information in the tooltip.--Relyk ~ talk < 23:59, 5 February 2015 (UTC)
- I've reverted to the previous version. Number one rule: don't break existing usage. By re-purposing the "icon" parameter, you broke every usage where "icon=only" had been in use. —Dr Ishmael 13:18, 6 February 2015 (UTC)
- You've broken it again relyk. IPs are making weird edits to fix it. -Chieftain Alex 08:09, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- #arraymap #dpl indicated that Don't Stop was the only page - other than Item nomenclature - that was affected, however I can think of a few pages off the top of my head that use it too, such as Temple armor + [[List of level 80 exotic armor]]. I reckon we need to put icon=only back. -Chieftain Alex 08:24, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- btw relyk, this template powers all the effect + attribute icon templates (templates in Category:Effect icon templates + Category:Attribute icon templates), so you should have been checking the usage of all of those. -Chieftain Alex 09:11, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- here we go:
<div class="toccolours" style="padding:10px;"> {{#arraymap: Boon Duration Condition Damage Condition Duration Ferocity Healing Power Power Precision Toughness Vitality |\n|@@@| <div style="float:left; display:inline-block; margin-right:10px;"> ;[[Template:@@@]] {{#dpl: | namespace = | uses = Template:@@@ | include = {@@@}:icon | table = {{STDT|sortable mw-collapsible mw-collapsed}},style="width:160px" ¦ page, style="width:70px" ¦ icon | includematch = /icon\s*=/ | count = 500 }} </div> |\n}}{{clear}} </div>
- -Chieftain Alex 09:38, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- Replaced all the obvious ones, I'll have a think about where else might be using icon=only then we can revert later now I've manually fixed all the invocations. -Chieftain Alex 10:13, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
- Obviously, attributes are not effects and we want to handle those with an attribute icon template. I already prepped for that with {{attribute}}. Pretty sure those list-type pages are the only ones that actually use attribute icons by themselves. (Insert rant about {{icon}} not being used to make the icons)--Relyk ~ talk < 11:19, 30 June 2015 (UTC)
