What exactly does "Items must be of the same type." mean?[edit]

Can I transmute a heavy armor helm (for example) and a light armor helm? (same body slot, but different armor class) The preceding unsigned comment was added by 218.186.18.236 (talkcontribs).

Think of it like different weapons like an axe and a hammer. Although they do share the same slot, they are completely separate items that have different stats and are only useable by certain professions. The same can be said of different tiers of armor, such as light and heavy. -- MS 22:58, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
this sucks. most of the shortbow skins really suck (due to their compact nature), whereas their longbow counterparts are actually quite awesome-looking. wtb longbow skins for shortbows :'( 22:15, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
Well, shortbows should have to be shortbows I think. You might as well say you want the ability to make your shortbow look like a greatsword. A weapon type should be identifiable by its appearance; there are a few exceptions where longbow and shortbow apearances are the same within a particular set, but those exceptions are very rare and make sense because the appearance is longer than the average shortbow while shorter than the average longbow. 174.35.247.117 22:36, 15 February 2013 (UTC)
There must be some other limitations. I have 2 Rare, Light, Chest Armors (one lvl 56 Strong Cabalist and the other lvl 68 Carrion Conjuror) that cannot be transmuted. Separ (talk) 04:53, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Is one of those items level 80? Psycho Robot (talk) 04:54, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
No. It turns out that I did not know how to use the transmutation stone. D'oh! (first time and all). Separ (talk) 04:56, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Fine Transmutation Stones[edit]

Apparently there is a rare chance that after dialy achievements/monthly/land exploration completion/etc you might get the Fine ones. But are there no other ways apart from the gem store to get them? I mean, I've been searching for these for months and I still can't find them. That's a bugger....... I just want to transmute ONE item and I still can't. --190.246.33.10:1971 19:39, 30 December 2012 (UTC)

As noted on the main page, you *can* get them from Black Lion Chests. Of course, the keys have had their drop chance reduced so much, good luck finding one to open a chest, and then hope hard for the small chance for one (or is it three?) of these to pop. Best bet is to just cough up some in-game gold and buy a batch of 5 for 200Gems. Even at current g:G exchange rates, it's not really that much, and essentially it's still free. 76.173.70.174 09:53, 1 January 2013 (UTC)

Seriously ?![edit]

Basic transmutation are useless! everyone mostly spent time with her/his level 80 and will never wear gear under level 80 on these characters... I have about 100 basic transmutation stones and no more fine one, would be great if a.net let us convert the basic into fine (even if ratio should be 16 for 1).

I think a MF recipe to upconvert them would be an outstanding addition, but just as an FYI:

Despite the "must have Best-in-Slot!" mindset foisted upon players by most games, the difference in, say, damage output or improvement to critical chance between a level 78 exotic and and 80 exotic is laughably tiny, but it can mean tons of savings on the TP, plus you could use a Basic Stone! :P--66.229.220.115 17:06, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

^reality check @ anon: Most of the SKINS we want, come off level 80 gear! --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 20:05, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
I'm foreseeing that in the future of Gem Store, Anet might introduce something like Copper-Fed Salvage-o-Matic whereby it would be an unlimited usage of Transmutation Crystal!! Not sure whether would it COST to USE the unlimited crystals... but then looking at how Anet do things... the chances are there. Paladinofmm (talk) 23:34, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Do they still have a use?[edit]

I still have a transmutation stone clogging my inventory. Will it still have a use? Why does it still exist? I am afraid to destroy it because I don't know what it is for. Since it still exists it must have a use, right? I have the same question about Festival Tokens, Instant Trait Resets and Power Core Components. Tharkon (talk) 00:20, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

You can convert multiples of 3 stones into 1 charge (double-click on the stack of stones), however if you are left with 1-2 stones after that, I believe they become useless inventory-cloggers. Had one left at the end, and decided to just destroy it rather than hold on for a "maybe one day". --Wolfie User Wolfie sig.jpg (talk|contribs) 01:07, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
As for your festival tokens, go find a Festival Rewards Vendor, and the power cores I suggest hold on to for the moment, there are still these broken / being repaired energy probes dotted around the place, implying there's still more to come with those. --Wolfie User Wolfie sig.jpg (talk|contribs) 01:22, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
