Obtaining Influence

Seeing how this is likely to be a point of major interest, should "Obtaining Influence" be given its own section within this page much like "Spending Influence" has? I think the current throwaway line in the summary isn't sufficient to describe the method or quantity that can be acquired. 216.172.119.188 16:05, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

The throwaway line was thrown in there when we knew very little yet! Anyway, someone added this section, great stuff. If someone can explain what the "attendance check" is, that'd be helpful though. -- NilePenguin 15:50, 11 May 2012 (UTC)
It would also be good to know whether ANet remembered to nerf guild invitation spamming, i.e. I get invite, join, quit, get another invitation, etc. Be a horribly boring way to farm influence. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:23, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

You can't get extra influence by inviting someone, kick/quit, and inviting again (tested during the May 2012 Stress Test). This suggests it might be a once per account gain (since once you invite one character from an account, all characters join the guild). There may, however, still be some sort of cooldown period after which re-inviting a character might once again earn the guild influence, but I can't think of a reason why such a mechanic would be implemented. Also, yes I would like an explanation on 'attendance check' as well (frequency, automatic or manual, etc). 203.153.202.157 06:39, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Ought to be a mention of the Tome of Influence in here somewhere (from the digital deluxe version?). If memory serves it granted 1000 influence. 194.66.175.81 12:24, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

As for the per-player influence increasing substantially with every new player, can anybody check this? When I do an event with a friend, we get 20, and we still get 20 when we have 3 or 4 people participating. Has anyone else found any more levels that increase influence gain? Salaset 12:52, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Influence spending options

I'm quite familiar of a system like this as I played RO (Ragnarok Online) quite a bit and they had a sort of guild exp and guild leveling system. This looks very interesting and is far more complex from that game's guild leveling system obviously.131.247.140.18 18:09, 16 April 2012 (UTC)-Yumiko ^.~

Yeah, except experience points you earn won't be reduced by the guild tax. So it's quite different. Mediggo 20:12, 16 April 2012 (UTC)

The video linked at the bottom of the page showed that the research times can be shortened by spending additional resources on an upgrade in progress, I don't think it's mentioned on the page as of yet. Anyone know if it can be sped up multiple times, or how the cost of these speed boosts is determined?--31.151.75.101 18:16, 31 May 2012 (UTC)

Yes, an upgrade can be sped up multiple time by adding influence. Saga [TSD] 07:43, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Purpose of level upgrades?

The list of upgrades includes the option to upgrade the "level" of category. From the screenshot, it appears that having a certain level is a prerequisite for purchasing certain upgrades. Is that mechanism confirmed? Should this point be clarified somewhere within the article? For example, having a narrow column in the table showing the required level for each upgrade. ~Guest --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 144.191.148.3 (talk).

Already there - it's the "Required Research" column. And yes, that's how it works - you have to have researched that level of the category in order to build the upgrade. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 17:24, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Inconsistencies

In BWE2 the research levels were gone but the level 1 research, except for Art of War which had now just a level 2 research and no level 1. To be kept an eye on at BWE3. --EeUser Ee sig.png 19:22, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

I think what happened is that now it only shows you the current level that needs to be researched. If your guild hasn't researched level 1 yet, then you only see level 1; if you've researched L1 but not L2, then you only see L2, etc. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 19:42, 13 June 2012 (UTC)
Correct. As soon as our guild reached L1, we could research L2 (but the other levels were hidden). Sometimes there's another prereq, in which case, you might not have the option at all. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 06:42, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Speeding up research time

I noticed during this past BWE (BWE2), that research time could be cut by 25% for a price of influence, but I forgot how much it was. I believe it was either 3 or 5 times as much as the original cost of the research for every 25% you cut off the time. Did anyone else check this and can maybe confirm if it was either 3 or 5 times the price? Symphy 11:39, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Was 2.5 times on the ones we tested. 200 pt upgrades cost 500 per speed up, 500 pt upgrades cost 1250 per speed up. 58.96.98.239 14:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
I believe it was proportionally less if there was less than 25% of the time remaining. (soz, I meant to write these stats down). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:28, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Correct. It appeared to be 10 * percentage boost * Original Cost. Will need to test on additional items, though. --Kaleden 17:57, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Cross world guild rewards

I present the following scenario that happened to me in the last BWE. At the end of the first BWE i joined a guild in the world Maguuma. At the start of the second BWE I changed my world to Sea of Sorrows. But i was still a member of my first guild which had the guild leader an majority of the members still in Maguuma. I left the guild to join another (actually left not 'not represent') so i did not have time to check, but does anyone know how the rewards will work with members in different worlds? Will the rewards leech through into each world, or will different worlds need to make accumulate influence and research (dunno if this is possible without a guild leader)?--Vincent2166 17:22, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Everything I've seen/read suggests that WvW rewards are world-based, nothing to do with the Guild. However, there's a delay after leaving a world before your new home's benefits take effect (to prevent people from switching to get better rewards). (The delay might be until the scores reset or a fixed amount of time — it's changed at least once, so I'm not sure which applies.)
Representing a Guild only affects whether your actions generate influence for it; it has nothing to do with the World-based rewards.
So, in your scenario above, you might have been receiving Maguuma-benefits b/c you had recently switched. Probably, by the end of BWE2, you were receiving Sorrow-benefits. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:03, 16 June 2012 (UTC)
No, im not referring to the WvW benefits, i know that is only affected by your home world. Im talking about guild benefits, guild rewards. Benefits such as guild members will gain additional 5% experience, those things. Will those rewards leech out into all guild members in all worlds?--Vincent2166 03:09, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes (or at least, they are supposed to) — guilds are not localized to a Home Server; they are universal. Like any other guild mechanic, you can only get the benefit while you are representing the guild. (I apologize for misunderstanding your original question. I was confused the word, "reward" — these are boosts granted by improvements built via the Influence queue. Some of those guild benefits are specific to WvW.)
I suppose that means that some of the Art of War boosts can be used by multiple sides in WvW, e.g. if Maguuma was fighting Sorrows, guildies from both sides would gain the same boosts from holding forts. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 03:29, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Experiences of others lead me to believe that guidls do exist across different worlds, but they are 'instanced' in a way, in that you can contribute to the guild-hall on your home world, or the guild-hall from a previous home-world... Here's a link from the BWE1 impressions that explains what SoF members ran into: http://forum.sof-guild.com/showpost.php?p=222703&postcount=8 Torrenal 03:51, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Sounds like a bug. I noticed a lot of odd stuff during BWE1 regarding guilds, with some members on other servers not showing up in the roster, the amount of influence changed drastically after the big mid-BWE1 outage, in-guild chat issues, and so on. I can't imagine that ANet intends that members have to be on the same home world to share benefits. One test of just how "instanced" guild presence is would be to see if ppls on a different server could see the same items inside shared storage.
Then, to answer Vincent's question: it appears we don't have a definitive answer about how it worked in BWE2 nor how it's supposed to work. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 04:12, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Yes I ran into an issue quite similar to what the SoF members ran into. I recall before the end of the first BWE my guild then had quite a few options researched and some influence. While i didn't check these things whilst on the Maguuma world at the start of the second BWE (changed right away) I noticed that at the start of my second BWE in Sea of Sorrows, all options were not researched and the guild had no influence. So If what Tennessee says is correct, which I thought would have been the case, I should have seen those options researched and influence present (unless they did a guild wipe). So right now I'm slightly confused about what is happening with cross-world guilds.--Vincent2166 04:16, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Er... I will admit that we can't be sure of how its supposed to work. Private comments form my own guild members after BWE2 effectively repeated what was stated about BWE1 above. For now, I'll leave this topic at 'Research Needed (during BWE3) and perhaps a Q to the GW2 staff...' Given what I understand of A-Net WvW ideology, it's possible what's been observed is deliberate & correct.Torrenal 04:22, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
Sounds like an excellent plan. Please keep us informed about this topic, I want to know how this issue will work out at end game. --Vincent2166 05:56, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
I'm just along for the ride in this respect. If anyone wants to put the question to A-Net, go for it. I'll just sit back and see what the outcome is. Torrenal 17:06, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

(Reset indent) In all beta weekends, guild influence and upgrades were gained and unlocked on a per world basis, with the exception of the emblem, which was shared across all worlds (access to the editor was not). I don't see why they're run all beta weekends like that, and then change it for launch. The article should at least mention that it worked that way previously and may or may not do so on launch. --zeeZUser ZeeZ Sig.png (talk) 15:52, 2 August 2012 (UTC)

According to ANet employee Daniel Jennings:
"Yes, a guild can have members from any number of worlds. They will be making guild progress (e.g. upgrade and influence) towards their guild only the the world they’re playing in, though, so the influence isn’t shared between the different versions of the guilds in other home worlds. You will share a roster, and chat, and the normal social features with everyone regardless of their home world, though."
So, it's intended by ANet that influence accrues into separate buckets, one for each world, with separate build queues. This is going to benefit guilds that are encouraging their members to co-locate and screw guilds that aren't paying close attention to the wiki, especially if they don't realize this until after their members choose a world. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 23:29, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

So this means that things like Architecture stuff is not shared across the guild? There will also be separate guild vaults? Well that sucks.--Fogeltje 07:16, 30 August 2012 (UTC)

Politics/Economy Level 5?

Is there any evidence of "Research X Level 5" upgrades for Politics and Economy? The game only shows you the next-higher upgrade from the level you're currently at, so someone would have to get their guild up to level 4 in something to see it, and I don't think there's enough time in the BWEs to get that far. (Given the increasing times for levels 1-3, level 4 will probably take 1 week, so unless some guild has a massive pool of influence to throw at cutting the time down, it just ain't possible.) Anyway, since there aren't any level 5 upgrades in those categories, it seems kinda pointless for there to be a Research Level 5 upgrade.

I'm just gonna leave them off the tables for now, since we don't know how much they cost or how long they take. They'll be easy to add back later. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 23:44, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

I know the buff that most of the banners give (for example in the Economy line) last for 30 minutes; however, has anyone recorded how long the actual banner lasts? I assume it has to disappear at some point, otherwise guilds would end up putting them everywhere, but I can't find any reference as to when they will disappear. Initia Nova 05:41, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't have any way to verify it, but my guild used 2 different banners during BWE3 (gathering bonus and karma bonus); both of which lasted an hour. 71.8.92.98 04:49, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
My guild currently conducting some tests with banners. We discovered that they can not be placed in cities. We tried planting one in LA with no effect. We are also going to be looking into if the buff stays around when you change zones and what interaction between overflow and main server there is. LokiTheKeeper 146.6.208.16 14:58, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
After you craft the banner, is it a one use him or an it be used over and over? This information would be very useful to know! Thanks. --49.176.68.46 02:42, 31 August 2012 (UTC)
It's strange that it can't be placed in cities now. During one of the BWE's/stress tests (don't remember which) I popped one up at the end of Sharkmaw's Caverns in LA. So that must have just been changed somewhat recently. Initia Nova 22:00, 1 September 2012 (UTC)
Verified Tuesday, September 5th - I placed a guild banner (+5% xp) near the Cooking crafter in Lion's Arch. I've also placed one in a cave near the Sylvari starting area. --Kaleden 17:55, 5 September 2012 (UTC)
My guild was playing around with the gathering bonus banner last night which we plonked in Queensdale where the lettuces grow. We discovered the 10% increase had a novel effect here. Obviously you can't get 1.1 lettuces so it appeared to give us 2 lettuce heads instead. Verified this with a low level guildie so worth dropping these in those sort of areas. Should help cooking with double strawbs and potatoes as well I'm guessing. We'll try that tonight. 194.66.175.81 12:22, 6 September 2012 (UTC)
Verified that banners work again in Divinitys Reach, it maybe that they can't be placed while in overflow, will have to double check that. Banners are one shot deals, they are consumed once placed. At least for the 5% xp boost, it seems that the banner lasted 4hrs with the buff lasting 30 mins per touch on the flag.LokiTheKeeper146.6.208.16 18:19, 11 September 2012 (UTC)
I've placed a banner twice in Lion's Arch (not overflow obviously), at the Asuran PvE area gates. Everyone can benefit from them, so placing them there seemed a good choice to me. Don't know how long they last though. The Heart of the Mists is also a good location to place them, as players can zone there for free, get the buff, and zone back to where they were. Sjeng talk 12:03, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
Placed three banners today, they stay up for about something just over an hour, so you can get the buff two times --145.97.209.215 20:46, 13 October 2012 (UTC)

Traveling Antique Shows are great!

Huh? found under the Economy - 10% Magic Find. 2.98.178.124

It's just a humor line, I believe, equating finding magic items in the stuff you loot with finding works by Renaissance masters in such a "traveling antique show" --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.80.35.25 (talk).

Refunds?

If you cancel an upgrade that is currently being researched, do you get the influence refunded? Perhaps the main article could clarify this? --Combatter 13:03, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Yes, you do get the influence refunded. Angeliqa 09:18, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

I recently queued an upgrade, accidentally clicked the button to reduce the build time, and then canceled the research. I was left with less than my original influence. However, it seemed that what I was refunded was the cost to increase the build time, not the original cost of the research itself or the total cost. I may have misinterpreted what happened, so more testing will be needed to confirm what, precisely, it refunds. NickdeClaw 21:33, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

Multiple members, 1 event

I am pretty sure that you do not get 20 influence for 2 members doing 1 event or storyline at the same time. I cannot verify storyline, but events have not been giving my guild 20 influence. C The 01:34, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

They have prior to 08/12/2012. That's when it looks like Influence became erratic. I have a Tech Support Forum post noting inconsistencies. on 08/09/2012 another guild member and I partied and received 60 influence for the three events we completed. Now however it is unpredictable. I am not sure how it is working now? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 192.168.104.81 (talk).
I can confirm on 10/04/2012 that 2 guild members in a party received 2 influence for completing a storyline mission instead of the 20 expected (Ring of Fire server). This happened consistently for 3 missions. User Paradox 16:31, 4th October 2012 (GMT)
I agree, We (two players, 1 the personal story owner and 1 party member [Blackgate server]) have played approximately 30 personal story events and have yet to receive 20 Influence to either of our guilds (both repping the same guild at same time). This is still the case as of yesterday (10/30/2012). This is unfortunate since we are a small guild and need all the resources we can to increase influence. Building Tier III, IV and V for the guild is very lengthy. Having both Story Influence and Event Influence would really help. Hope it gets fixed soon. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 74.93.5.6 (talk).
Storyline influence is still not working (12/03/2012). Still not getting influence for personal story line or when helping other complete their story.
If you have changed the world or not changed the guild you represent after the first month after game release you need to swap what guild you represent. The most notable example was that my first character was told "your guild doesn't have a vault" but all other characters in the same account used it just fine. After representing some other guild and then back to representing the original guild the guild vault access was fixed. This was also the source of gettin only 2x2 points of influence from two player guild party completing a dynamic event. After making sure both players have re-represented the guild after major changes two players always get 2x10 points from dynamic events. Personal storyline never grants any influence. (12/18/2012) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 194.111.71.133 (talk).
I can confirm on December 20th 2012 that doing a dynamic event with another guild member gave us 20 guild influence for that single event. Lord Discord 15:49PM, 20th December 2012 (EST)

Redundancy on how it can be earned

The page says "2 individual guild members completing an event or part of a personal storyline. (The per-player influence gained increases substantially with each new participating guild member.)" and "20 influence for two guild members completing an event or part of a personal storyline at the same time." Those are saying the same thing. I would replace the "per-player" part but I am not sure if it goes to 10/player or if it scales even more. If someone else has an idea of if it is a set 5x if 2+ guild members partake or if it changes it should be edited to reflect that in my opinion. C The 00:46, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

The definition of personal story "part"

On the influence page it says "[you get influence] for two guild members completing an event or part of a personal storyline at the same time."

"Part" is a vague term. I know it's probably not an easy thing to describe concisely, but I feel it can still be done.

Perhaps something like "[you get influence] for two guild members completing an event or a single personal storyline event at the same time. (A personal storyline event is defined as beginning the next step in your personal storyline and completing that instance.)"

Something like that paints a picture that more people will be able to relate to. "Instance" is perhaps a vague word to use, but savvy Guild Wars 1 and MMO players will likely know what it means. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 121.44.89.53 (talk).

Guild Banquet?

Can anyone explain what the Guild Banquet actually does? Thanks in advance, -- Manny 19:18, 24 September 2012 (UTC)

Sure, we had one last weekend: It spawns a table, a keg, an XP banner and a fireworks cannon at your location, lasts 1 hour. When interacting with these items you get respectively: food XP buff (30 min), drunk effect, XP killing buff (30 minutes), fireworks display. So it's basically just for fun and guild parties. You don't get points toward your food/drinks titles. see a video here. Sjeng talk 13:48, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Guild Upgrade Explanations

I think we should build pages for each Guild Upgrade to explain them in more detail. Repeating what the game says about them is fine but it doesn't clearly state what the real function is of the upgrades. For example, how dose the Vault Transport work? Is it a one time use, is it a use as much as you want for 24 hours? Is it buy once and use forever? For 50 influence I would think it's a very limited time use but there isn't anything that clearly spells this out to someone before purchasing it. Also, one can guess from the Roman numeral icons in the lower left of the upgrade icon that the level of the base upgrade needs to be that level; for example, Guild Treasure Trove shows a V (5). I assume that's level 5 Architecture but there isn't anything that spells it out. Mouseover only shows that level 2 is required. However, obtaining level 2 does not allow that to be built. My examples might be bad but my intentions I think are well placed. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 192.168.104.83 (talk). 07:33, 30 September 2012 (UTC)

Further, I have no idea what the Asuran Outsourcing does. Is it a free tech? Is it used up to research something (for Influence) in addition to the normal slots? Is it a permanent extra slot? 206.53.68.157 19:57, 8 October 2012 (UTC)
Vault transport is a 1 times use thing, you can craft it, and let it sit in your available upgrades for as long as you want, but once you deploy it, it's gone. Not 100% sure on the duration of it in the open world, but most likely no more than an hour similarly to the banners. The same thing for banners and other "on the spot" consumable buffs. The ones that are 24 hour+ buffs like the guild-wide experience ones are passive guild-wide buffs that affect everyone regardless of where you are and last for the full duration it specifies in each. They also can be put in the upgrades "holding tank" as I call it, however, unlike the short temp buffs you can't stack them up. You can activate one, then begin crafting another, but you can't have for example:- guild experience boost for 24 hours x2 sitting around. Nay the One and Only User Nay the One and Only SIG.jpg 05:21, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Asuran outsourcing can be crafted and stacked until ready to use, but what it does, is once you have reached your maximum of 2 in the active queue and try to craft another upgrade, it consumes your asuran outsourcing and you have another upgrade actively queueing as opposed to putting it in an inactive queue until the others finish. You do not click on the asuran outsourcing itself, as long as you have one sitting around already crafted and waiting to use, it consumes it and removes it automatically. PvP influence

When I play PvP I have not seen any influence gain. I have been playing structured pvp, not tournament. Do you have to be in tournament to gain influence, or should it not matter? Maybe I gained influence and just missed it. Can anyone confirm? --Moto Saxon 19:01, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

Prerequisite?

Is there a prerequisite to being able to spend the influence you've accumulated? For example; Do you need permissions from the Leader of the Guild? Do you need to be in a specific place? I have accumulated thousands of influence and can browse the upgrades available in the guild menu just fine but none of the 'Add' or 'Activate' buttons are populated. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 192.168.104.83 (talk).

Yes you need adequate permissions to spend influence on upgrades. You do not need to be in a specific location to spend influence. You need to meet the requirements of each upgrade, most upgrades require a certain level in a field before you can purchase them (ie Politics L2 or Architecture L3 etc). Attendance check is progressive step function

It looks like the guild gets

  • 10 influence per account, up to 20 members (200 influence)
  • 5 influence per account after that
  • perhaps less for larger guilds

Data:

  • 19 logged on = 190 influence added
  • 20 logged on = 200
  • 21 -> 205
  • 27 -> 235

It also appears that the members do not have to represent the guild to get credit for the attendance check. 75.37.19.214 18:03, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

I can confirm this, it even get worse.
  • 10 influence per account, up to 20 members (200 influence)
  • 5 influence per account, up to 50 members (200 influence + 30 x 5 = 350 influence total)
  • 1 influence per account after that. ( maximum my guild had so far was only 57 members logged in, so i can't say if there is a total cap.)
Hope this will help in crunching the numbers. Saga [TSD] 03:03, 26 December 2012 (UTC)
Looks like there isn't a cap and just continues with 1 influence after that. I'm in a guild that had 157 members log in one day for 457 influence. User Mattsta Sig1.jpgUser Mattsta Sig2.jpg 06:13, 31 December 2012 (UTC)

Attendance strangeness - GW1 influence?

In my logs, it says 4 members logged in on 10/31 so the guild got 40 influence. I'm in my own 1-person guild and on 10/31 I had only created one character (I got the game about 1 week previous to that). I did not create any other characters until several days later. So even taking into account that it's possible for characters to earn attendance points, there does not seem to be any way for me to have done this. EXCEPT that on 10/31 I was also on GW1 doing Halloween stuff with 3 GW1 accounts. Now 1+3=4. The thing is, I only have one GW2 account and thus only one link. But my guild name is the same as the one in GW1. So I wonder if the attendance call applies to people logging into the same guild in GW1. Don't know how else to explain the 4 people in one day. 65.87.26.122 19:27, 7 November 2012 (UTC)

The system is looking at total logins for the guild. If you logged in and out 4 times, it reads it at 4 members logging in. GW2 guilds are in no way, shape, or form connected to GW1 guilds. 71.51.48.234 04:42, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
The actual guild influence may not be connected, but I have noticed when people log into GW1 it shows up on the GW2 roster with their name grayed out but their status as online. This has been confirmed on multiple occasions by multiple people and I even tested it myself by logging into GW1 on a separate account while I had GW2 running and sure enough the 2nd account showed up as online. So not sure if it counts that towards influence or not, but I doubt it. 71.68.238.112 00:31, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Attendance check

It's listed twice, once under Attendance and once under Participation. I'm bad at editing wikis and I'm also not sure which one to keep so I'm leaving it up to you people--213.118.51.162 14:22, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

No, those are two different things. One is logging in, the other is actually doing things (I think you're looking at dungeon completion). --JonTheMon 13:50, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Influence boosts

My guild has the +5% Influence boost for 24 hrs and the +10 Influence boost from Events up at all time. Nevertheless I can see a lot of occasions where "Members have completed 38 events earning 76 Influence". This would suggest that the boosts are not working or that the extra bonus is not gained by counting the percentage on the overall gained influence but instead on the individual accomplishments. i.e. if you finish a lot of events, gaining 2 influence each time, the 10% + 5% bonus that is supposed to add up to those events, giving a +0.3 influence, is lost in the calculations, possibly by rounding down the number. I have checked the number of gained influence in the Guild History against my own calculations and it just stays at 2 influence per event ( for solo completing an event ).
