Latin Origins[edit]

Gladium is also the latin word for sword (accusative singular case). Related? BrettM 17:27, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Possibly, its worth adding to trivia, in my opinion.--Corsair@Yarrr 19:17, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
A lot of roman and mongolian stuff seems to be put into the charr, so it could be related. -- Konig/talk 20:45, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
It appears that both tribune and imperator have roman roots. Should be added to trivia, in my opinion.--Corsair@Yarrr 21:36, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Well I was going to add it but Wikipedia says the word is Gladius. I'm not a Latin expert so I'm not sure if that makes any difference or not, just saying.~ Bow 06:09, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
Gladium, the accusative singular of gladius. "Accusative" means it's the form the word takes when it's used as a direct object of a verb. It seems like a good term for a solitary warrior at the lowest rank. Just another warm body. BrettM 18:10, 29 July 2010 (UTC)
I think it should be added to the trivia then.~ Bow 00:34, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Cobiah Marriner[edit]

Cobiah Marriner was a human who traveled with charr after he was shipwrecked during Sea of Sorrows. I don't own the book so I can't check whether he's actually referred to as a gladium there or not, but either he should be taken off the list, or the description should be updated to clarify that the term has a broader use than just "charr without a warband". ~ Ferlith (talk) 22:26, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Removed it because he's a human, and more importantly not of the charr high legions, which by definition of the term gladium means he cannot be one. I think he was (mockingly, imo) considered one after being rescued by the captain of the charr ship, but I wouldn't say he was ever considered a gladium. To quote: "While you are here, you are a soldier on this ship, a gladium, with no warband at your side and the lowest rank aboard. You have two duties on this ship, Gladium Cobiah. The first is to do any job you're told, and the second is to obey any order you're given. We're shorthanded, by the claw, and you'll pull your weight or you'll be ballast!"
This to me sounds less than officially naming him the rank of gladium in the charr legions, and more that Centurion Harrow was making it clear that Cobiah was the lowest individual on the ship, equivalent to the lowest rank in the charr legions. I don't think Centurion Harrow had the official say to indoctrinate Cobiah into the charr legions, and without being within the charr legions, he couldn't technically be a gladium. Similar situation to during gw1:War in Kryta when the Ebon Falcons help the Shining Blade in their war against the White Mantle - Captain Langmar had no official power to declare they could aid Kryta, so she and her finest unit went on R&R from the charr war to be in Kryta, and just happened to help folks out when they needed it.
If we count Cobiah as a gladium, then we must count all non-charr as a gladium. And that just doesn't work. Konig 22:58, 26 December 2014 (UTC)

Gladium/Glade page naming? SotO[edit]

Possible page options for Gladium, friend of R'tchikk and a main character in SotO (open to other suggestions):

  • Gladium (Glade) (R'tchikk calls them "Glade" in a couple instances)
  • Glade (Gladium)
  • Gladium (Astral Ward)
  • Gladium (SotA)

Note that the following pages exist:

  • Gladium
  • Gladium (NPC)

The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rainspell (talkcontribs).

I recommend Gladium (Astral Ward). It shouldn't be Glade - we do not make articles based on only occasionally used nicknames (otherwise Bloody Prince Thorn would be Bloody Prince Thorn (Eddie) or something). Alternatively Gladium (SotO) could work but it'd become weird if they're a reoccurring character post-SotO for some reason. Konig (talk) 04:59, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Does the current Gladium (NPC) add any extra value to that which is already on the Gladium page? I would rework the Gladium (NPC) page to the new character. --Hesione (talk) 06:47, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Gladium (NPC) is for NPCs that were in the game since core, so yes, there is a value to them having page. Gladium (Astral Ward) sounds good. ~Sime 11:54, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
Glad that's solved then. --Rain Spell (talk) 16:03, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
