New main page[edit]

I would love to hear your/anets feedback on Aqua's redesign for the main page.-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 02:59, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

This is an interesting direction, an improvement on the current main page in my opinion (and in-line with the GWW). Here are a few ideas and comments for your consideration (some from me, some from other people in our team):
  • Capitalize and increase the size of the headers text
  • Swap the "Recent news & updates" and "Wiki community" sections (to emphasize the community aspect)
  • Add some spacing between the 3 columns
  • Not sure that you need the GW2 logo between the profession images (the logo is already on all pages on the wiki), plus this would allow you to make these images more readable as they're currently difficult to see
  • The paint washes could look more like paint and less fuzzy around the edges. Variance between the backdrops on each header could be nice too, so it doesn't have that stamped appearance.
  • The profession images haven't been resized very lovingly - they've got a crunchiness to them. It might just be the way those backgrounds look when they shrink down that small. Maybe we could provide the profession images minus the backgrounds?
  • Instead of just plain blobs of red in the images, maybe try shades of lighter reds and oranges for variance (though not so much that it compromises legibility).
Feel free to keep me in the loop, thanks!--Stephane Lo Presti talk 23:47, 25 January 2012 (UTC)
  • "some from other people in our team" - Wow, thanks! It feels pretty awesome knowing you went out of your way to get a bunch of people to look at it. I think I know how ArenaNet feels when fans get all excited. Even if I technically have basically just watched Aqua and a few others do all the work.
  • "Capitalize and increase the size of the headers text" - I agree with Stéphane on this, although it may conflict with our efforts to make the main page as accommodating as possible to all resolutions.
  • "Not sure that you need the GW2 logo between the profession images" - I like it there, but;
  • "this would allow you to make these images more readable" - that sounds worth it.
  • "Variance between the backdrops on each header could be nice too" - +1
  • "maybe try shades of lighter reds and oranges for variance" - I think it worth noting that this would make the main page resemble the logo much more. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 00:13, 26 January 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for all the feedback Stéphane (and others). I'll work on changing the colors at least; I'll see if I can enlist Infinite or Redshift to do various paint swatches.
Need round of massive changes coming up... Aqua (T|C) 00:22, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Favicon[edit]

First off; thank you and the team for changing the favicon!
But then, some aspects of it that I wish to comment on:

  • It would be amazing if the favicon could have a transparent background, and utilizes the 16x16 dimensions more efficiently (the logo with text currently fits the width, but ideally it would also fill the entire height of the favicon). Either way, transparent background on favicons are the way to go in this century (or have a favicon that is square-shaped, and fills the whole 16x16 pixels area).
  • Maybe it would be better to have just the dragon logo with a notable W (for wiki) over it, as a favicon. Or an alternative; anything to really use that small square to the fullest effect.
  • Alternatively, the favicon for the official site could be used for the wiki also, to show that it is definitely the official wiki (I am not sure why this wasn't already done for the change-over).

Either way, thanks again to you and the rest of the team for considering the favicon. I (and I am sure many other contributors) am very grateful for this. :) - Infinite - talk 14:08, 27 January 2012 (UTC)

i agree with infinite's statements. a dragon logo with a w would be perfect imho.-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 23:23, 27 January 2012 (UTC)
Ok so you'd be happy with the favicon on guildwars2.com? I'm not too keen on adding the W on such a small logo but I think that a good case can be made for sharing our official favicon on the official wiki. (by the way, where is the right place to have this discussion? Community portal? Or too few people care that we can go ahead and react if people don't like it?) --Stephane Lo Presti talk 22:27, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
I would be happy with the favicon that is also used on guildwars2.com, personally, but for a proper discussion regarding it I would advise a topic on the community portal, yes. :) On the other hand, you could also just be bold and update the favicon first and then share it on the wiki news, also found on the community portal. Either would/will lead to comments. :) - Infinite - talk 22:30, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
I think I'm going to go bold, especially given that I already asked for the favicon to be changed. Just hoping that it's not going to be perceived badly by the community! --Stephane Lo Presti talk 22:32, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
If they do, you know whose talk page to send them to, right? :P - Infinite - talk 22:36, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
+1 for using the official gw2 favicon. brilliant idea, anyone who says otherwise should be shot :) --Moto Saxon 23:55, 30 January 2012 (UTC)
Yay! Thanks Stéphane and Infinite! User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 00:11, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Sorry but I might miss something here: what is favicon? User:Glastium Glastium | talk 00:43, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
It's the tiny image shown in tabs and / or beside the URL. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 00:44, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
Oh I see that. Has it been changed? It appears to be the old GW2 icon on my navigator. I think I did refresh my cache. User:Glastium Glastium | talk 00:50, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
I think you didn't. :P
Try another browser. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 00:52, 31 January 2012 (UTC)
You are right... I didn't. D: Now I really see that. User:Glastium Glastium | talk 00:55, 31 January 2012 (UTC)

(Reset indent) That is a very nice surprise! Thumbs up! :D - Infinite - talk 19:48, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

font[edit]

Salut Stéphane!

Is there any chance that you could in some way make the font used on the Guild Wars 2 website (example) available to us? I realize that ArenaNet may - understandably - wish to reserve it for their own work, and that's fine of course. I just thought I'd check if it was possible.

À bientôt, mon ami. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 15:45, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Both of these fonts are paid fonts, so unfortunately I cannot share them with you. We probably won't use the font above (called Aspire), whereas the one below (called Eason Pro) is one of our official two fonts, see the Guild Wars 2 Asset Kit documentation. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 19:29, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
To my knowledge, Aspire was not covered in the Asset Kit documentation but it's good to know that the font is a paid one. Also, how do you mean "We probably won't use the font above", because it's clearly the choice of font for the headers on official pages at this time? Just curious at this point. :) - Infinite - talk 19:39, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
No Aspire is not mentioned in the Asset Kit, only Eason Pro and Cronos Pro are. I was just told by our webdesign team that it's unlikely that they keep using it. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 19:46, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
I see, thank you for your time! :) - Infinite - talk 19:48, 9 February 2012 (UTC)
Oh of course, I never thought of checking that for some reason.
Sorry for wasting your time. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.png A F K When Needed 22:07, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

Aquatic weapons[edit]

Can you list the official weapons that are in the game for aquatic weapons? just wondering if its spear gun or harpoon gun and if its spears or harpoons (which is it in the game?) we are having a discussion on which it is and someone notice that the terms might have changed. so a official statement would be nice.-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 07:50, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Hey, the official list is here: http://www.arena.net/blog/jonathan-sharp-talks-underwater-combat Hope this helps! ~SL
The concern is that every actual in-game source we've seen (Fanday, SDCC, Gamescom, PAX, and now the recent Beta Weekend) have had the names as Harpoon and Speargun (as opposed to the blog entry which says Spear and Harpoon Gun). So long story short: Are you sure? - Tanetris 01:58, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
I think because no one really discussed it on the spear talk page was that it was called a harpoon as the item name but it was still a spear. just like for a wile there were axes in gw1 named scythes (that were renamed) but were still axes.-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 02:12, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Um, no. - Tanetris 02:32, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

I've asked for a clarification on this and will let you know whenever I hear back from that. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 02:33, 28 February 2012 (UTC)

Looks like there's been a mixup with aquatic weapon names and I can now confirm that the names in the blogpost I quoted above are correct! Thanks for pointing us to this ^^ --Stephane Lo Presti talk 23:14, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Stephane, for clearing that up! super helpful.-User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 00:50, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Pre-order questions[edit]

Hi Stephane, I want to know how will the pre-order work in Canada, especially in Quebec. Where Can I pre-order it? What are the prices? Do I need to pre-order it before april 10th? What is the difference between pre-ordering it and pre-buying it? Also, I would love to have a GW2 t-shirt, is it possible to buy one from somewhere? Do you have some left at the studio I could buy? I would really love to have one, I'm a huge fan and this would do publicity for the game. There is also some beta matters that I can't discuss in public, would it be possible to send you a message or a e-mail?

Regards,

Sam --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Jolote (talk).

While I'm not Stephane, I can at least direct you at the list of prepurchase retailers currently being compiled for where you can pre-purchase it, and at the official pre-purchase FAQ, which describes how the process works. Prices are listed at buy.guildwars2.com. The difference here is that pre-order does not apply to these. You'll only get a day of early access, and only pay for the game once it ships. Pre-purchase on the other hand means that starting April 10th you can buy (and pay the full price listed for) a pre-purchase box and get beta access and all the other listed bonuses. Hope that helps. --zeeZUser ZeeZ Sig.png (talk) 20:48, 30 March 2012 (UTC)

GW2 novels in french[edit]

Hi Stephan, I would like to know if you have any information about the first 2 GW2 novels (Ghosts of Ascalon and Edge of Destiny), where last year, it has been announced that they would be translated in french. We can still see on the official site "Ghosts of Ascalon est attendu pour le 27 juillet 2010 en Amérique du Nord et en Europe.", but there hasn't been any update on the french version of it since you said (in GWW I think, or on twitter) that there was some issues with the translating company. I'll wait until the 3rd book to see if I'll buy them in english, but I would love to have them in french. Hope to hear from you and thanks in advance for your answer! Lytalm 06:33, 18 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi/Bonjour, the text on the website is not up-to-date, the two books are already out in French. --Stephane Lo Presti talk 16:54, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
Super!!!! I hope it is available in Quebec =) I'll jump to the closet library to see if they have it. Thanks for the fast respond Stephane and hope to see you in BWE next week end! Lytalm 23:34, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm not exactly sure how you'd get them in Quebec, but I can tell you that the French publisher is "Bibliothèque Interdite". Good luck! --Stephane Lo Presti talk 23:53, 18 April 2012 (UTC)
