Invasion of Lion's Arch[edit]
During Invasion[edit]
- Shortly after invasion begins, in Grand Piazza
- Head Researcher Levvi: I told Magnus something like this would happen. There's stubborn and there's stupid, but like most norn, Magnus is both.
- Head Researcher Levvi: He can dismiss my research with bluster and insults, but that won't work on a sea monster that's eating his city, now will it?
- Research Assistant Bardus: Understood. The Lionguard are out in force. I'll bet I can get a few of them to assist me.
- Head Researcher Levvi: Heh. That'll put a tangle in Magnus' mustache: us solving his problem with his troops. I approve. Carry on!
- Head Researcher Levvi: Time to earn your pay, people. I need you in the field, finding out more about these creatures.
- Research Assistant Bardus: Wait, what do you want us to be doing? Should we fight the creatures, or collect samples, or...
- Head Researcher Levvi: Do what you can for the locals, but I need carapace and egg samples from these "karka" for study.
- Head Researcher Levvi: I'll be here, working on a way to fight them. Now get moving, or there won't be a city to come back to.
- Shortly after invasion begins, at lighthouse
- Lionguard: What is that thing?
- Shortly after invasion begins, at Consortium asura gate
- Subdirector Blingg: No! Our gate! This is–wait. How do I even report this?
- Subdirector Blingg: Citizens–do you reel and wonder at the mysteries behind this portal? Don't worry. Soon, all will be revealed, courtesy of the Consortium!
- Lionguard Tyrro: Hold it. This area isn't safe. Unless you want your guts torn open, stay back.
- Talking to Head Researcher Levvi
- Head Researcher Levvi: Whoa! I expected something big, but this? I'm all for killing that thing before it kills us, but save me a few pieces to study!
- I'll do what I can.
- West side of Fort Marriner, after Bardus made his way south
- Lionguard: The city's being overrun. We've got to get everyone out.
- Research Assistant Bardus: Lion's Arch isn't lost yet. My boss, Levvi, is studying these "karka" creatures for a way to defeat them.
- Research Assistant Bardus: We just need samples to work with. The more we have, the quicker we'll figure out how to stop these things.
- Lionguard: All right. I'm going to start moving civilians out of harm's way. I'll also muster up some volunteers to help you.
- Talking to Research Assistant Bardus
- Research Assistant Bardus: Can you help us? Collecting samples from the karka could teach us how to stop their attacks on Lion's Arch.
- I have some karka samples for you.
- Every little bit helps our research. Keep them coming.
- I'll see what I can do.
- What do you know about the karka so far?
- Until we can study actual samples, our knowledge is limited to distant observation and supposition.
- You said "we." Are you with the Lionguard?
- Ha! My boss has been warning those guys for weeks–Never mind. Doesn't matter now. We're all doing what we can.
- I understand.
- I see. Thanks.
- I'll see what I can do.
- Research Assistant Bardus: I don't have much time. I'll take whatever you have.
After Invasion[edit]
- At the lighthouse
- Lionguard: I can't believe the lighthouse is gone. The port of Lion's Arch has gone dark for the first time in decades.
- Lionguard: The Captain's Council will explode when they hear about this.
- Lionguard: The lighthouse was a beacon of hope on the Sea of Sorrows, the light of civilization and commerce–
- Research Assistant Bardus: Quit yammering and do your job. There are citizens in danger. You need to help them, and I need to get these samples back to Levvi's lab.
- At Grand Piazza
- Head Researcher Levvi: Well, Magnus. I hate saying I told you so... Actually I love saying it to you, just not this time. Anyway: I told you so!
- Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Do you have anything constructive to say or are you just going to stand there spewing bilge water?
- Head Researcher Levvi: Well, based on its shell, I've named the creature Levvi's Leviathanus Carcinus, and...
- Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Fine. Inspector Kiel! Work with this asura to find out what has these "karka" creatures so riled up and put a stop to it. Permanently.
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: Aye, Captain Magnus, sir! Any idea where I should start looking?
- Magnus the Bloody-Handed: Look around, Inspector. Pick a shell and start kicking. The Lionguard is at your disposal. I have to go explain all this to the Ship's Council.
Inspector Ellen Kiel's Investigation[edit]
Initial Dialogue with Kiel[edit]
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: Welcome, citizen. Are you here to contribute to the relief effort? Or maybe to be deputized for the investigation? There's no shortage of ways to help.
- What can I do?
- There are three major efforts. Any one of them could use your help. Researcher Levvi is looking into the karka creatures themselves. The Lionguard is collecting donations to rebuild the city.
- You mentioned a third option? (Same as "I received a letter about an investigation.")
- I have to go now, but I'll be back.
- I received a letter about an investigation.
- Yes, I'm looking into who or what prompted the karka attacks. Lion's Arch response is three-pronged: research, relief, or responsibility.
- Count me in for the investigation.
- Outstanding. I need to stay here for the time being, but you should head down to the beach. A lot of wreckage washed up right before the karka attack, and it bears closer inspection.
- Where can I find the wreckage?
- It's scattered along the western beaches of Lion's Arch, from the Diverse Ledges to the Moran Memorial. Keep a sharp eye.
- Any advice about how to investigate?
- Thanks.
- Any advice about how to investigate?
- Start with the fragments. Try to imagine how they fit together. If you get stuck, look for something to help you out.
- Where can I find the wreckage?
- Thanks.
- I'm on it.
- Can you review the choices for me again?
- I want to help, but I can't right now.
- Who are you?
- ?
- I'm interested, but I'm not ready yet.
- Talking to Kiel again
- Glad to see you. Any luck sifting through the wreckage?

- I'm on it.
- Searching Sealed Cargo Barrel or Ruptured Cargo Barrel
- A waterlogged barrel, washed in by the tide.
- Leave.
- Searching Broken Cargo Container
- Part of another crate that has washed ashore. It has writing and a partial symbol.
- Leave.
- Searching Jetsam
- Debris from a recent shipwreck, likely connected to the creature that attacked Lion's Arch.
- Examine more closely.
- Part of a crate crushed by great force. The rest of it must be nearby.
- Leave.
- Leave.
- Searching Broken Cargo Container after Jetsam
- Debris from a recent shipwreck, likely connected to the creature that attacked Lion's Arch.
- Examine more closely.
- A larger part of the same crate. It has more writing on it, and the symbol could be a logo. There may be more parts along the beach.
- Continue the investigation.
- Leave.
- Searching Ruptured Cargo Barrel after Broken Cargo Container
- A barrel from one of the recent shipwrecks, likely connected to the creature that attacked Lion's Arch.
- Examine more closely.
- The barrel has the logo of the Consortium, a group gaining higher profile in Lion's Arch lately.
- Continue the investigation.
- Leave.
- Searching Sealed Cargo Barrel after Broken Cargo Container
- Debris from one of the recent shipwrecks, likely connected to the creature that attacked Lion's Arch.
- Examine more closely.
- The barrel has the Consortium logo, but the lid's on tight. It'll take a prying tool to open.
- (If carrying a crowbar.)
- Use the crowbar to open the barrel.
- It holds soaked Consortium bags. The rotten plant material in them likely came from some sort of flower.
- Take a sample for Inspector Kiel.
- Leave.
- Leave.
- Searching any debris a second time
- The debris has nothing else relevant.
- Leave.
Return to Inspector Ellen Kiel[edit]
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: Glad to see you. Any luck sifting through the wreckage?
- I saw lots of Consortium logos. Like the one on this bag.
- That's the Consortium's mark, all right. And from the look of it, that bag has been in the water for at least a week. Which means this whole mess started earlier than we thought.
- What's next?
- We talk to the Consortium. Or at least, their representative in town. We need someone in the know that we can lean on.
- Anyone in mind?
- Head Researcher Levvi: I know just the weasel. His name's Blingg, and you'll find him near Fort Marriner. He's got no spine, no brains, and no guts, so he'll roll right over. Just don't tell him I sent you.
- Why not?
- He's my ex. We were young, on the same krewe, we got involved...but he was a cheat, both in terms of plagiarism and infidelity. It ended badly...for his face. My fist fared much better.
- All right, then. I'll talk to Blingg.
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: That sounds solid to me. Track down Blingg near Fort Marriner and let me know what you find out.
- Will do.
- I need a moment to think this over.
- Not to worry. I'll brace this Blingg without invoking your name.
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: That sounds solid to me. Track down Blingg near Fort Marriner and let me know what you find out.
- Will do.
- Hold on. I'll be back in a moment.
- Give me a moment to consider things.
- I need a moment, but I'll be back.
- Nothing yet. I'll let you know when I have something.
Dialogue with Subdirector Blingg[edit]
- Subdirector Blingg: Welcome! Are you here to test your mettle and take a jaunt through the Consortium's Mystery Portal?
- I'm here to ask you some questions. In an official capacity.
- Levvi sent you, didn't she? I swear, that woman can't let go of me. It's embarrassing, frankly...for her. Don't let her obsession drag you down too, my friend.
- Ha! I knew she'd come around. She wouldn't have set that spike trap on her front porch if she didn't want to cripple me so I could never leave her. Now, then: what's on your mind?
- This bag bears a Consortium logo. Can you tell me about it? (Same as below.)
- Hold on. Excuse me a moment, will you?
It's true; once she finishes this project, she's coming back to you.
- Oh, I see. She paid you extra to hide her involvement. Okay, I'll play your silly little game: what does the "Lionguard" need to know?
- This bag bears a Consortium logo. Can you tell me about it? (Same as below.)
- Stand by. I'll be back in a moment.
This is a Lionguard matter, loverboy. I need some answers, now.
- I won't. But let's leave Levvi aside for now. I need your help.
- Ha! Like I left Levvi aside, months ago! Zing! The only "help" she needs is a crying towel. Double zing! Just call me Blingg the Zinger! Now then: what did you want to ask?
- This bag bears a Consortium logo. Can you tell me about it?
- No! I mean, nothing. I know nothing about it. That is to say, yes, that is a Consortium logo, but no court in the land would convict on that such specious evidence.
- It washed up on the beach. And you know all about it, don't you?
- Certainly not. The Consortium's interests span the entire globe. The fact that some of our merchandise showed up here, right before the crisis started...it's nothing. It means nothing!
- All right, listen: those are Consortium goods from a Consortium operation. It's got something to do with this portal, but that's all I know. I swear!
- You know more, Blingg. Keep talking.
- Something went wrong with the operation...and then those sea creatures attacked...and now the portal is...it's not my fault! Subdirector Noll ordered me to keep it all quiet. Here's the proof!
- Then I need to talk to Noll. Until then, stay where I can find you.
- Hold that thought. I'll be back.
You don't have to take the fall for this Blingg. Come clean.
- That'll be better than nothing when this blows up. All right: yes. That bag is from a Consortium operation. It's got something to do with this portal. That's all I know, I swear!
- You know more, Blingg. Keep talking. (Same as above.)
- Hold that thought. I'll be back.
Help me out here, Blingg, and I promise to keep your name out of it.
- Don't do that...I need my ear bones! Listen: yes, that bag is from a Consortium operation. It had something to do with this portal, but that's all I know.
- You know more, Blingg. Keep talking. (Same as above.)
- Hold that thought. I'll be back.
Talk, or I break all your bones. Even the little ones in your ears.
- Maybe not. But I'll be back.
- On second thought, let's do this some other time.
- Hold on. I'll be back in a second.
- Maybe we should do this another time.
- No, I'm just enjoying the view. Good-bye.
Subdirector Noll[edit]
- Without having done the previous steps
- Subdirector Noll: Greetings on behalf of the Consortium. Now, please—I have an important meeting. No rest for the industrious.
- Who are you?
- Subdirector Noll of the Consortium. We're a conglomerate of investors and thinkers dedicated to making people's lives more fun. Subdirector Blingg in Lion's Arch has the full prospectus.
- Thanks. I may pay Blingg a visit.
- Sorry to bother you.
- Before talking to Blingg, or after event without participation
- Subdirector Noll: I don't need your help, plebeian, and I don't want your pity. I just...had a little accident. Could happen to anyone.
- At least you're handling it gracefully.
- Having done the previous steps, before event
- Subdirector Noll: A subdirector's work is never done. Greetings on behalf of the Consortium, but I'm extremely busy at the moment.
- Blingg in Lion's Arch said you could tell me about the karka.
- All right. But we need to talk. Soon.
- During the fight
- Subdirector Noll: A troublemaker, huh? Looks like I'll be filing another incident report with the home office.
- Subdirector Noll: I surrender! There's no profit in pursuing this any further. Let's talk terms.
- After the event, having completing it
- Subdirector Noll: All right, you win. We're already in full damage-control mode anyway... You want the sylvari, Canach. He's behind this, and I can prove it. Here's the evidence.
- Next time, don't make me ask so hard.
- Upon talking to him after the event.
- Subdirector Noll: You got what you came for, now leave me alone. I couldn't tell you more than I already have, even if I wanted to.
- It's my job to keep an eye on suspicious characters. Get used to it.
- After receiving mail
- Subdirector Noll: I've nothing more to add...except that Canach is a valued member of the Consortium team, and the Consortium vigorously defends its own.
- Like they defended you? Color me unimpressed.
Dialogue with Canach[edit]
- Before talking to Noll, or after event without participation
- Canach: What...what are you staring at? Even at a disadvantage, I'm still your better. If you want something, speak up and move on.
- Sorry to bother you.
- Having done the previous steps, before event
- Canach: You look like you have something to say, but I don't know you.
- Canach? Subdirector Noll gave me your name.
- Noll! That foolish criminal. Whatever he told you is a lie. In fact, if you press this any further, I'll take it as a direct attack on my person and reputation and be forced to react.
- Fine by me. You need a lesson in humility.
- If you say so. But this isn't over.
- Canach? I've heard a lot about you. Is it all true? (if sylvari)
- I am Secondborn sylvari of the Pale Tree. I do not tell tales or play games with my reputation. If you seek flattery or gossip, find a Firstborn.
- Subdirector Noll sends his regards. He gave me your name. (same as "Canach? Subdirector Noll gave me your name.")
- If you say so. Good-bye for now.
- Relax. I was just taking in the scenery.
- During fight
- Canach: This is beneath me, but it is necessary. Defend yourself.
- Canach: You're more skillful than I expected, but that won't save you.
- Canach: Perhaps I underestimated you...but that's easily rectified.
- Canach: I don't have time for this. Just fall down and die.
- After the event, having completed it
- Canach: I...yield. Noll told you most of it anyway, and it's pointless to keep denying what I've done. I chose to play this game, and I have lost.
- And there will be consequences. But the Lionguard will determine those.
- I will not run and be hunted like some base animal. I had reasons for my actions and will not apologize...but I'm ready to answer for what I did.
- Then maybe there's hope for you yet.
- I've heard enough. I need to get this document to Inspector Kiel.
- Upon talking to him after the event.
- Canach: I'm ready to answer for everything I've done, both on my own and as a Consortium agent.
- Good. I'm sure Inspector Kiel will want to talk to you personally.
Reporting to Kiel[edit]
- Inspector Ellen Kiel: Any progress to report?
- Not yet. (before speaking to Blingg)
- All right. If you're looking for Blingg, try the hills west of Fort Marriner. Good luck.
- Got it. I'll let you know when I have something.
- I've got a lead from Blingg, but I haven't followed up on it yet. (after getting Blingg's confession)
- That's encouraging. The Consortium keeps its members on a tight leash. It's good that you got one of them to crack. Keep up the good work.
- I'll keep you informed of my progress.
- ? (after getting Noll's confession)
- ?
- ?
- The Consortium's involved. So is a Sylvari named Canach. Look at this. (after getting Canach's confession)
- Amazing. I've seen Canach around. If he roused the karka, and the Consortium's covering it up...we have a conspiracy on our hands. And for once, it doesn't involve the Ship's Council.
- What happens now?
- I'll have Canach picked up. And here, take this. Lion's Arch is all about fair exchanges, and you've earned it. I'd like to keep you around to help us see this through. Interested?
- Count me in. I'll be ready when you need me. (receive a Jug of Liquid Karma)
- I'll be back in a second.
- I'm working on it. I'll let you know when I have something.
Miyani's Scavenger Hunt[edit]
Dialogue with Miyani[edit]
- Miyani: Here to take your chances with Zommoros, the genie of the Mystic Forge? Or perhaps you'd like to see what I have for sale? I can help with donations to the cause as well.
- I need to ask about the karka creatures that attacked the city.
- I don't know about them, but Zommoros is much older and wiser than I.
- Can I speak with Zommoros?
- Zommoros: The Mighty Zommoros agrees to this audience. These "karka" creatures are familiar to me. Long ago, such creatures dominated the sea. They swarmed up from the depths, over shoal and shore alike.
- What do they want?
- Who can say? They haven't been seen since the world was emptier and the continents held a different shape. You must ask the aquatics, those that swim and have swum since ancient times.
- The aquatics? What do you mean?
- The fubsy blubberfolk who wisely abandoned Lion's Arch when they saw this coming. Also the poison frog people of the fen, and the silent, invisible assassins of the deep.
- So quaggans, hylek...and "assassins" can only be largos. But where-
- Seek your answers in Caledon Forest and Kessex Hills. And hurry: these "karka," as you call them, mean dark days ahead for you and your city. The Mighty Zommoros has spoken.
- But I need to know more.
- Miyani: Sorry, that's all you're going to get. "The Mighty Zommoros has spoken," is his way of saying, "I'm bored now. Go away." He's a bit of a snob.
- Tell Zommoros I appreciate the advice. Thank you both.
- I'm not ready to speak to with Zommoros just now.
- Maybe another time.
Dialogue with Pastkeeper Saballa[edit]
- Quaggan has been so muddled since fleeing home. There was a monster, huge, and...so hard to remember.
- Does this driftwood do anything for your memory?
- Foo, this would never be in deep waters.
- I'll keep looking.
- I found this deepwater seaweed—does this seem familiar?
- Does this urchin meat remind you of your home?
- Maybe these scallops will help you remember.
- (After a one success)
- Ooh, yes. This stirs the silt in quaggan's memories.
- Maybe I can find something else that reminds you of home.
- (After a two successes)
- Quaggan remembers...lots of white, and red. Big legs! Quaggan's head was hit... Oah, still hurts.
- Maybe I can find more reminders for you.
- (After all three successes)
- Quaggan's head is clear now, and quaggan just remembered this magic scroll that holds knowledge of those creatures.
- Thank you.
- Pastkeeper Saball: Boo. The krait are bad, but these crazy shell bugs are even worse.
- Pastkeeper Saball: Quaggan hasn't seen a swarm like this since quaggan was a hatchling. Foo! Foo, quaggan, says!
- Pastkeeper Saball: Don't even stop to think when they show up. Just leave.
- Pastkeeper Saball: Hopefully you can deal with them better than quaggans could. Good luck.
- Can you remember what drove you from your home?
- No, this area is strange and confusing. Maybe things from the deep waters like home could help quaggan remember.
- I'll see what I can find.
- I'm sorry for your troubles.
- Talking after completing the task
- Thank you for helping. Quaggan's memory is murky, but these magic scrolls remember things for quaggan.
- Your scroll was helpful. Thank you.
Dialogue with Gukumatz[edit]
- Gukumatz: I don't normally deal with strangers, but the Sun shines on all of us.
- I need help dealing with these shelled karka creatures.
- I have heard they are vicious and numerous. Worse, they are extremely durable and resistant to damage.
- Exactly. I need to get through their shells and make them vulnerable.
- Brilliant. I know a concoction that can melt the stone bark off a petrified tree.
- This sounds promising. How do I make it?
- The alchemist's own intuition and skill are the most important ingredients. After I start you off, you'll have to find the right mixture yourself.
- Where do I begin?
- Use this container to hold ingredients from the swamp. Return to me when you've got something viable.
- Any advice for a newcomer like me?
- Alchemy takes balance, and potions require the four essences to be in harmony. To that end, four elemental rules bind novice and master alike.
- What are these rules?
- Earth grounds lightning, lightning conducts water, water extinguishes flame, and flame scorches the earth.
- I'll remember that. Thank you very much.
- Thanks, that's all I needed to know.
- I'll be back as quickly as I can.
- I need a few moments before I get started.
- Interesting. I need to think this over.
- I'll be right back.
- Nothing right now, thank you. Good-bye
- Returning with combined elements
- Gukumatz: Well done. But obtaining the components is only half the battle. Combining them properly is key. Let me inspect your work.
- Here. Take as much time as you need.
- Yes...yes. Remarkable, for a beginner. May the Sun god bless you with victory over your shelled opponents.
- Thank you. Good-bye
- Wait. I'd like to check everything one last time.
Dialogue with Fahd al'Eshadhi[edit]
- Before combat without scavenger hunt
- Before combat with scavenger hunt active
- Winning combat
- Fahd al'Eshadhi: You bested me, so I honor our agreement. A largos without eternas is nothing. The shell I took from a karka is just over there. It is now yours.
- Thanks, but I'd like to hear about the karka directly from you.
- They are very old. The longer they live, the larger and more dangerous they become. Once fully formed, their shells cannot be pierced by normal means.
- Then how do you...how do we defeat them?
- When first hatched, when they outgrow their shells and shed them for larger ones, they're vulnerable. Recreate this condition before you strike.
- How?
- I see. Thanks for the information.
- I need a moment to sort this out.
- That is a start. Thanks for the workout.
- Winning combat (without scavenger hunt having triggered)
- Fahd al'Eshadhi: Impressive. Formidable despite your appearance. I won't underestimate you again, but I need a moment to collect myself.
- My questions and I are waiting.
- Losing combat
- Fahd al'Eshadhi: Disappointing. Perhaps you don't really need my information. Take a moment to recover. I'll be waiting.
- You won't be waiting long.
- After beating him
- Fahd al'Eshadhi: I've claimed trophies from everything that walks, crawls, swims, and flies...but not from you. At least, not today.
- Fahd al'Eshadhi: Congratulations: you have proven yourself worthy of deeper consideration.
- Fahd al'Eshadhi: I look forward to meeting you again...under the terms of the Tethyos Compact.
- Fahd al'Eshadhi: Do not die before then. That would be disappointing. And I so hate being disappointed.
Concluding hunt with Head Researcher Levvi[edit]
- Head Researcher Levvi: I was right about the karka, but I never thought being right could feel so bad. The only thing that will make me feel better is fixing this mess...and then rubbing Magnus's nose in my success.
- I have some karka samples for you.
- Every little bit helps our research. Keep them coming.
- Thanks very much. I'm just glad I could help.
- Here. Maybe this will help.
- Fantastic! This is just what I need—a powerful solvent and a piece of shell to test it on. My krewe's going to be busy...but in the meantime, I'd say you've earned this.
- Thanks very much. I'm just glad I could help.
- Let's fix it first. We can mock Magnus later.
