Talk:Light source
Good idea[edit]
Just posting a note to say thanks for making the table. :3 IceBlink (talk) 22:27, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
- same. I wonder if the the "looks like a source, but isn't" section should be reduced to just bullet points. They aren't light sources, so do we really care about any other details? 75.37.21.118 22:45, 9 July 2013 (UTC)
Skills[edit]
Flamethrower's Flame Jet sure lights up. At this moment nothing else comes to my mind though. Howellq (talk) 21:13, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
Volcanus[edit]
" Volcanus, Greatsword: red light; ( not tested but when preview acts like other light source weapons, notice the change between stowed and wielded ) ."
I moved this from the main article because we haven't established that the weapon preview window is a reliable method of determining illumination. It should be, but ANet can be inconsistent with skins, icons, and effects. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:00, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
- I've been in parties with people that had Volcanus and it did not seem to have any particular illuminating effects - definitely not in the style of a Fiery Dragon Sword, anyway. Granted, this wasn't in a "dark" room like Obsidian Sanctum, just inside dungeons. Vili 点 18:46, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
- I can confirm that the FDS illuminates for the wielder, but not for anyone else nearby. (I've tested this in the dark rooms of Obsidian Sanctum and Weyandt's Revenge). I believe we've been using this article to indicate both types of illumination: individual and party/etc. I'm not worried about testing in a shadowed area in dungeons or open PvE, but I am worried about using the preview window — there are just too many ANet Inconsistencies™ to consider that a reliable (ahem) source. I think it's likely that Volcanus will light the way for its wielders, but I prefer we leave it on the talk page until we can confirm it in-game, not just in-preview. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:29, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
Remove The Crossing[edit]
After reading this very page years ago when I was struggling with very dark places like Weyandt's Revenge, I was shocked that only one staff can act as light source, and "faint" at that. (I think ALL staves should function as light sources -- did no one see Gandalf lead the fellowship through Moria by the light of his staff?)
So, long had I sought to acquire The Crossing. I finally got one. It is neither a light source nor is it worth what I paid for it.
If you look *straight* down on your character, while moving you will *occasionally* see a tiny, fuzzy ball of dim yellow light flash on and off on the ground directly below you. That's it. I do not count that as a light source. It was less than useful in a jumping puzzle.
I was going to suggest the same on the page for The Crossing, but that page makes no mention of it being a light source on anything around the player, afaict. -- 70.189.108.65 10:11, 25 January 2017 (UTC)
Handcrafted Processional Flame is a light source when not wielded[edit]
I'm not sure if this belongs here or under the weapon itself, but the Handcrafted Processional Flame is, like all torches, a light source when wielded, but it is also a small-radius light source when stowed on your belt. Cynique (talk) 09:01, 18 February 2017 (UTC)
You are mistaken, I just crafted Handcrafted Processional Flame and it does not provide a light source when stowed. Shivan (talk) 16:24, 12 September 2021 (UTC)
Only lighting up area for wielder seems to be the rule[edit]
In fact, are there even any exceptions to this rule at all?
I suspect some of the information in the table is wrong.
Can we actually see other players' The Crossing or Candelabra staffs illuminating the area around them?
Can we actually see other players' stowed Aetherized or Dominator torches lighting up the area around them? From my experience, you can't even see the lighting provided by wielded torches of other players. --175.156.217.21 11:50, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
(missing from the list) Burden also provides a (faint?) light source[edit]
I would assume that only the wearer can see it too. --175.156.217.21 23:54, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
A suggestion[edit]
Organizing the items by whether they illuminate for the owner or all players could offer more information at a glance. Rather than a phrase after each item defining its illumination rules, create subheaders: "illuminates for the owner" and "illuminates for all players." You could remove 60% of the text and be clearer at the same time. Monkey.2719 (talk) 00:38, 8 December 2018 (UTC)
Elementalist skills and few skins[edit]
Tested all elementalist skills
Most are very faint and many only exist for very, very short times so I wasn't sure if they were worth adding
Elementalist glyphs - small light during casting - Except elemental power (because arcane power has the animation)
Stone resonance - very faint
Cleansing fire
Tornado - infrequent lightning emit light
signet of water
lightning flash
ether renewal
signet of restoration
arcane brillance
Also checked only the swords of a few black lion sets that glow but produce no light - didn't want to add to exceptions because only checked one skin
Phoenix
Glittering
Funerary
Glacial

Do any of the halloween minis act as a light source?[edit]
There are a few new halloween minis added this year which one could suspect work as a light source, such as the mini mad memories backpacks. --112.199.192.101 07:17, 16 October 2019 (UTC)
definition doesn't match the game[edit]
From my experiments there seems to be 3 categories when we're talking about weapons, armor, back: 1) illuminating of the area, but always only for self 2) illuminated, but not illuminating (both for both self and others) ie; you could be more easily seen in a dark area by others, but that's all 3) illuminating or illuminated but so insignificant that it's misleading to label them this way (ie; burden, the steam torch)
Unless this is a problem with my settings I compared side by side on two clients with two characters and much of the information in the table is incorrect with respect to my tests. Profession skills like firebrand tome 1 fire field make a good control. This is illuminated and illuminates, for both self and others. I'd like to confirm my understanding of how this actually works and invite discussion of how to correct. Gartner (talk) 18:47, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
