Your participation level determines the number of reward track points you will earn each tick. Participation is earned by participating in a variety of WvW activities, such as capturing and defending objectives, completing events, and killing enemy players.

Participation is a metric that partially governs progression for both the Skirmish reward track (pip) and WvW Reward Track (point) systems. A participation "tick" occurs in WvW on a global timer every 5 minutes, upon which the players receive progression for both reward systems. To receive pips, the player must reach tier 3 participation, and the amount of pips depends on other factors in the skirmish. To receive points, the player must reach tier 1 participation, with higher tiers awarding more points. The participation UI is shown by hovering over the chest icon in the top right corner of the minimap.

Participation increases when engaging in relevant WvW objectives or killing enemy players. The amount of participation received depends on the task and current participation tier, as shown in the table below. When an action results in a tier increase, any amount of participation past the current tier is scaled according to the new tier. For example, joining WvW at participation tier 0 and defeating two invaders will award 150% participation, promoting the player to participation tier 1 with 16.67% participation towards tier 2. Players may reach a maximum participation level of tier 6 at 100%, i.e. a mathematical total of 700%, although past tier 6 at 0%, no additional rewards are provided.

Players performing a squad support role can be marked by the commander to receive shared participation so that they do not have to focus on dealing damage to be credited. One player can be marked to receive shared credit for every five players in the squad.

Participation level may be lost over time through a series of two timers: an inactivity timer and a decay timer. When the player performs an eligible action as shown in the chart, it sets the inactivity timer to the fixed amount shown (this is ignored if the current timer is longer). The decay timer does not start until the inactivity timer has run out and it always begins at 15 minutes. When the inactivity timer gets reset, so does the decay timer. The participation UI indicates the timer and time remaining on the participation bar.

  • The inactivity timer will show with a green bar until there are 90 seconds or fewer remaining, at which point the bar turns orange.
  • The decay timer will show with a red bar.

Once the decay timer is active, it will run down at a constant pace from the current participation level down to tier 0, 0% in a fixed 15-minute span. This means the rate of decay beginning from a higher participation level will be faster than beginning at a lower level. Note that some minor events and enemies may not increase participation level, but do reset inactivity.

Participation level and timer durations are maintained when outside of WvW.[1] The Edge of the Mists uses an identical but separate participation system. The Edge of the Mists map is not based on the current match/skirmish and so does not award pips.
