Chest Rework

The aim of this project is to rework pages about Chests, to consistently document their behavior and contents.

Motivation

The documentation of chests is inconsistent and incomplete. Many types of chest are squished together in the main Chest article. Some of those types have lists of locations, like List of basic chests, but not a first-class article documenting their contents and other important information.

Starting with a rework of the main article, this project seeks to fix those inconsistencies and gaps, eventually reaching a state where all chests are consistently documented. There are many chests and types of chests, so that may take a lot of time. Therefore, we should prioritize the biggest issues and work our way out from there.

Contribution guidelines

Since a lot of this project revolves around standardization and consistency, we ask that you engage in the discussion before starting on any changes, to make sure there's a consensus for what you'd like to do.

That said, more help is absolutely welcome! This is a large project, and once things start to crystallize and we have a clear idea of what to do, there should be a lot of edits to share around between anyone who's interested, including a lot of smaller/easy edits.

Proposals

Discussion is still wanted on these items, but they are more clearly-defined changes we plan to carry out. Please create a new discussion topic matching the section name if you'd like to discuss anything.

Changes to Chest page
  • Remove Chest#Qualifying events
    • Event rewards should be covered on each event page by the use of Template:Reward.
    • Most large events grant some type of bonus chest now, making this impossible to document in a single location.
  • Consider whether Chest#Bonus chest should be a separate article, otherwise at least rewrite.
  • Separate Chest#Gallery into two:
  1. Screenshots of physical chest objects in-game
  2. Icons of bonus chests in the UI.
New page - Chest (object)
  • For the object whose name is "Chest", as opposed to a general summary of chests.
  • Discussion wanted for name: should it be Chest (object), or Chest (Central Tyria), in keeping with the theme of location-based chest pages?
  • Should include loot table, and locations moved over from List of basic chests
    • Make sure to filter out any unwanted chests from List of basic chests: some featured there are not called "Chest".
  • Go through Special:WhatLinksHere/Chest and find all links that mean "the object called Chest". Point those to this new page instead.

Discussion wanted

Discussion is wanted on these items, as there isn't a clear consensus or direction about how to proceed. Please click through to the talk page link for each topic.

Maps/locations

In short, which format should we prefer for presenting exact chest locations?

Merging and splitting pages

In short, what criteria should we use to decide if a particular chest deserves its own page, as opposed to a note in the parent page for chests of that name?

Consistency in drop reporting

In short, how should we consistently report the difference between unidentified gear for level 80 characters, and random gear for lower-level characters?

Map visibility with/without Treasure Hunter Protocol

In short, are many chests visible without this Jade Bot module? Should we report that? If so, how?

Subpages versus parenthesised titles

In short, which page naming convention should we use to disambiguate pages with the same object name but different location? Chest/Cantha or Chest (Cantha)?

Category changes

In short, should we add new subcategories for particular types of chests?

Interactive map style

In short, which Template:Interactive map layers should we display by default, to balance performance and readability?
