GW1 Templates

How can I use templates from the Guild Wars Wiki (1)? Template:Gr for example. << horsedrowner | talk | guild >> 12:55, 24 May 2008 (UTC)

You shouldn't copy templates directly from GWW to GW2W because the licensing is incompatible. -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 16:10, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
The licenses are compatible - both wikis use GFDL 1.2 or later. You'd need to provide attribution if you do copy something from GWW; something like linking to the history of the source page. --User Pling sig.png Pling \ talk 16:21, 29 June 2009 (UTC)
Oh really? Because I could have sworn I saw someone delete a template page or something because it was a copy from GWW, and that we weren't allowed to copy stuff from there to here. -- My Talk Lacky 12:51, 30 June 2009 (UTC)
It appears that the jury is still out on that, I have seen people say both things, GWW is allowed on here, it just cannot specifically relate to GW info, and also seen people say that the GWW and GW2W licenses are not compatible, and no GWW stuff is supposed to be done on here. 42 - talk 01:44, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
The jury isn't 'still out', some people are just wrong or are being misinterpreted. As both wikis use the GFDL, copying is allowed as long as you meet the requirements of the GFDL - sourcing the original article(s). Whether that content would be relevant here is the source of contention, not the legal requirements. -- pling User Pling sig.png 20:09, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Unless the source template gets deleted. -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 05:31, 14 November 2009 (UTC)
There are Guild Wars wiki templates that refer to Guild Wars 2. For example User SylvariGW2 puts up a user box that says this user will play a sylvari in Guild Wars 2. There are similar templates for each race. Doesn't make sense to me that they don't work on the actual Guild Wars 2 wiki. Hope someone isn't going to go to the other wiki now and delete those templates. Ramei Arashi 15:21, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Userpages from GWW to GW2W

Is there a way to redirect our GW2W userpage to our GWW userpage or use a template that gets the info/source from our GWW userpage and puts it onto our GW2W userpage? Basically, is there a way to get all the info from our GWW userpage and put it all on our GW2W userpage, without having to copy and paste every page? -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 06:03, 16 May 2009 (UTC)

I don't know of a literal redirect, but you can hard link it with [[gw1:User:Lacky|Lacky]] which will show Lacky. I don't know of (or think) there is any other way though. User Sensical Measures Sig.pngSensical Measures 14:44, 16 May 2009 (UTC)
OK, thank you. I guess that shall have to do for now. If anyone knows of a way actually redirect my GW2W userpage to my GWW page, please let me know. It would be much appreciated. -- §Lacky§ My Contributions Talk 00:17, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Lacky, I believe that it will be possible with the interwiki link, if there are actually plans to implement it. What I am going to do for now is to provide a link to my GWW page, and depending on the interwiki ability, if it is allowable, force redirects to my GWW page set. This is not an official opinion, just my own uneducated guess. 42 - talk 01:47, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

RSS problems

I subscribed to the recent changes RSS feed at http://wiki.guildwars2.com/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&feed=rss , and every link it serves dies. It looks like it has a bad address eg: wiki.guildwars.com:60/ instead of wiki.guildwars2.com. I don't know much about RSS/Atom feeds, but all my other feeds including the gww rc work fine. Is this my problem or a site issue? Obie Quiet 17:49, 16 April 2010 (UTC)

Java script

hello all. I had to reformat my computer due to too many instabilities and I have now forgotten the name of a java script I used for this wiki (mostly GW2W, but this one as well). Making a gallery out of an image category

At GW1W it's possible to make a gallery out of an image category (for example, the gallery of unique scythes). Is it possible to do the same here? I would like to make a gallery from the concept art images in order to organize them (I'm sure we have images uploaded multiple times under different names, but it would be easier to see everything in a gallery than having to check one by one). Erasculio 15:08, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

I know on wikipedia the images in a category automatically display as a gallery on the category page. I'm not sure why they don't here. The dpl version which we have installed here doesn't support the 'mode=gallery' type which would do this really easily for you with a single dpl statement. What I ended up doing the other day when I was looking for a specific concept image was 1) on a new page use dpl to create a file name listing. 2) copy the list to a text doc to clean up formatting. 3) copy that list to a new wiki page, surround it with gallery tags and hit preview. I would be interested in hearing if there is a better way to do this here. :P
Your dpl would something a little like this
<dpl>
category=ArenaNet concept art
</dpl>
Use the same query with 'offset=500' to get filenames past the first page. dpl only returns 500 results. -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 21:40, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, Aspectable. Due to your comment, I have tried removing some of the content at the ArenaNet concept art category and so I managed to create a (temporary) gallery there. Erasculio 00:51, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
This may sound primative, but you can just wrap in in a gallery tag, is this what you wanted? Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 04:32, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
It is, thanks : ) Although another way of achieving that is by removing part of the code on the category page - some users think that leaving a gallery there would make the page too heavy for common users, so they have added a "no gallery" parameter to that article. Erasculio 10:30, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I see that now in the comment left on the revision Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 12:42, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Using the self command in links

At GW1W it's possible to use the self: command in links (such as [[self:Armor]]) in order to create a functioning link that doesn't register to the wiki itself (in other words, that link doesn't appear in the "What links here" menu, nor does it count for the "Wanted pages" article). The same command doesn't work here, though; using [[self:Armor]] here creates a link to a "Self:Armor" article. Does someone know how to use that command here, or how to achieve that functionality (links that don't appear in the "What links here")? A bunch of links in the old policy articles are going to mess the "Wanted pages". Erasculio 23:43, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

It sounds like you mean just a normal link to the page you're already on. So for instance if you're on "Armor" then you put [[Armor]]. It doesn't create a link, but bolds the word (i've not checked if it adds to the "what links here/wanted pages" list but I'd be surprised if it did...). 87.242.140.14 00:23, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
im fairly certain each wiki dosn't maintain a separate article solely for links, however you may find metawiki's link article Useful, it contains everything in the basic metawiki's BBcode adaptation. The closest thing we have locally is Help:Editing, but that only covers the basics. What I would assume has been done on GWW, is that Poke (who, probably did it, although it could be any other technically-minded administrator), created a custom css or javascript definition to parse self: differently. As is standard among metawiki, though, gw2w currently would look for the page Armor in the namespace self (similar to how, in linking to a userpage you must prefix it with [[User:Example]] (just as the <nowiki> tag is a custom definition.) Although I have extensive knowledge in the HTML&CSS fields, I'm a mere novice in the javascript/other scripting languages, so im not 100% on it, if you want a definite answer, though, I'd ask Poke. Any Questions towards the non-server-side portion of this, feel free to ask either on my talk page, or here. Hope this helps! — Scythe 0:46, 23 Sep 2010 (UTC)

What was the code for setting the TOC to the right? and does putting <small> & </small> tags between it make the font in it smaller in the TOC itself, or is it a set size?--NeilUser Neil2250 sig icon5 Anti.png 21:37, 9 December 2010 (UTC)

Categories sorting images incorrectly after moves

Images which have been moved are still being sorted based on the old filenames, at the category pages. It's not a matter of reloading cache at the user end, and it's creating a rather big mess. Does someone know how to fix that? Erasculio 06:28, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

The images were first uploaded under a certain name. Moving them changed the title and access of these images, but did not re-sort them in the category and galleries. To fix this, I reckon we shall need to re-upload them, though I am not familiar with sysop tools enough to know whether a re-sort can be forced. - Infinite - talk 13:19, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Ok, what just happened? Now all images are being sorted correctly, including things which were not manually forced to be sorted properly. Does anyone have any idea of what has been changed? Was it just a matter of the wiki's cache being emptied by routine maintenance? Erasculio 18:29, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

Template help

I need help with the ArenaNet image template, but I have no idea of who here on the wiki actually knows about coding in order to help me. Since the list of helpers isn't describing people by area of expertise yet, the best thing I can do for now is just throw the question here and see if someone answers.
I'm trying to change the template so it always tags concept art images with the "Category: ArenaNet concept art" tag and so it automatically sorts concept art images based on filename. Currently, images are only tagged to the concept art category if no subcategory is chosen (if the second variable is left empty and the first variable is set to concept art), which is something I don't know how to change (and which may be too difficult to change, but this is not the thing I'm the most worried about anyway). I would really like to add a way to make the template automatically sort images based on filename (which would be a way to solve the problem described in the previous section, about moved images not being sorted under the new filename), but I don't know how to do that - there's already a {{pagename}} at the category entry on the list, and that's what I would have done (although I'm not sure page name there is the filename, or if filename would be "File:xxx", sorting everything at the letter F). Creating new pages

So I've been collecting a lot of info about some dynamic events thanks to the videos of the demo, and already wrote up some events here, in the wiki. The thing is there are some events that I have very little info about, or the info I have is not reliable (due to bad quality of the videos or due to not being clear how the event works at all). What I want to ask is if I should create pages for these events, even if I have little info, tag them as a stub, and when we have more info they will be expanded or corrected if something is wrong, or if I just should wait untill we have more info so we can write them properly. Thanks for the attention. - Bitter 15:05, 19 January 2011 (UTC)

Essentially you should just go for it. If it is wrong, the articles can always be amended in the future. Sometimes another set of eyes can assist, just make sure that you either reference your information directly in the article, or post your links on the talk page. That way others can try to decipher poor videos and possibly spot something you may have missed. Remember, a little information is better than no information (as long as you can justify where your information is coming from). New Tab?

Speculation and other such discussions are so common on main space talk pages that they are being considered problematic. Referring users to forums, other sites or user talk pages doesn't seem to help. Moves (specifically where to) also tend to cause quite a bit of drama, themselves. Is it possible to add a tab beside the "discussion" tab which links to a page specifically designed for these such "irrelevant" discussions, to allow for easier recognition of "relevant" contributions? One could also archive or move certain discussions from these new pages more easily, as they'd no longer be sandwiched between said "relevant" contributions. Of course, I'm in no way implying that referring users to the new page(s) would be any more successful than referring them to other sites. I am however implying that, once you allow them this alternative, they no longer have an alternative so easy to scoff at as out-of-the-way user talk pages or completely-off-site forums. This is a question regarding the possibility and practicality of such a concept. Teddy Dan 10:17, 21 May 2011 (UTC)

Although not impossible to implement, it is important that all users remember the fact that the Guild Wars 2 wiki is exactly that, a wiki. Wikis are generally not designed for speculation and general discussion, though we most usually let small chatter slide on talk pages. Currently such a tab would only be truly required on a grand total of 3 articles. I think that carefully monitoring the applicable talk pages with appropriate action taken where required far outweighs the implementation of an entire new tab/name space solely for speculation. The list of fansites has plenty of forums we'd be taking traffic away from (and that is neither our intention nor our aspiration). Again, we're a wiki, not a forum. ;)
tl;dr: Possible, extremely unlikely and not overly efficient. - Infinite - talk 13:15, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Okay. I was wondering if it would make your lives somehow easier, but bad idea is bad. v.v Teddy Dan 20:41, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
I know this is a month old discussion, but in my optics it would be rathere a good idea to have a more centralised Q&A section instead of moving everything to the FAQ section. I would sugest this because of the amout of questions that have been moved already and because I don't think that the talk section of the FAQ page is the best/most logical place to move every question to. Besides we already have the aforementioned FAQ that isn't there to document the game, but to help answer questions. So I don't think it's such a stretch to have a central page dedicated to actively answering questions on the game.(So no speculation, but questions)--RegentUser Regent Bone Horror.jpg 22:07, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
