I suppose you're here to mock me too? They call me "Vere the Coward". "Vere" because it's what my parents called me until they disowned me. And "Coward" because I deserted my warband.

You abandoned your comrades?

We were in the Brand. Outnumbered ten to one. I begged my legionnaire to retreat, but she refused and sounded the charge.

What was the outcome?

The others in my warband followed our legionnaire to their deaths, while I ran for my life. A few days after, I was captured, beaten, then shipped here for punishment.

What was your punishment?

I must walk the loop every day, telling my story to all I see, confessing my shame to strangers. After ten years, I'm to be exiled to some distant, desolate hole.

I thought deserters were sent to the Bane to fight for their lives.

Usually are. But they decided a slow painful death wasn't cruel enough for me. So, here I am. Pacing and confessing my shame to all. But then, they say every coward earns his fate.
