Digging around on Guru

Found this. I was wondering if we wanted to implement the race and class text, and if we did, where? Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 16:34, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

"They conjure are, fire, earth or water to assault their enemies." No. - Infinite - talk 16:36, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Quite possibly a typo, and they seemed to be our source for other ones too. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 17:21, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
I assume they just copied what they saw, not what was exact --NeilUser Neil2250 sig icon5 Anti.png 17:25, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
My thoughts are that they were working quickly, trying to get as much info before their demo timer ran out, and they misspelled something. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 17:55, 12 January 2011 (UTC)
Just went through some of the game play vids, the profession text is correct. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 02:39, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
With a quick spellcheck it should be fine to use then. :P - Infinite - talk 11:56, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
If we keep our fingers crossed, maybe they will add the fifth "are" element for us to conjure in the future!!! OP --Mooseyfate 19:29, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
The current quotes at the top of individual races' and professions' articles are... well, slightly meaningless, so the in-game descriptions can replace those. pling User Pling sig.png 14:57, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
I've used them to augment (which I'm not sure about). Opinions wanted. This double quote thing also spurs my next slightly related topic: tango icons. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 01:53, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
One or other quote please. Not both. The tango icon looks good, but I wouldn't start using them until we have a full set. Because as of tomorrow (my time :)) what will you put on the guardian page? -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 02:08, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
But we don't have the in-game guardian quote anyway. But I guess I could generate an icon. I'm currently working on a set based on the character creation ones. Of course, the guardian would have to be something placeholder-y until I got a good look at a demo guardian video. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 02:18, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
The tangos are/should be placeholders for the GW2 tangos. Just saying. - Infinite - talk 13:35, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Wait, do you mean we should use the old tangos or placeholder-y ones (i.e. a guardian one that is a conglomeration of paragon and monk) until I/someone develops an actual set? Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 15:20, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Placeholders, the old tangos only work for (at most) 6/8 professions. - Infinite - talk 15:34, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
My wording was awkward, I meant as in: use the old tangos as the placeholders and generate one for the guardian. (Probably by smashing together warrior and monk). Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 15:50, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, in that case I wouldn't use any tangos, actually. - Infinite - talk 16:30, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I guess I should get to work on my in-development GW2 set then ^.^ (Already have concepts for Ele and Necromancer, just need to computerize. Halfway done with Warrior and Ranger concepts). And then there's guardian... Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 16:40, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

How about using the jpg icons in the mean time? (Elementalist icon.jpgGuardian icon.jpgNecromancer icon.jpgRanger icon.jpgWarrior icon.jpg) - Infinite - talk 16:47, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Eh...sure. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 17:17, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Playable races formatting

The Guild Wars 2 twitter described upcoming news about the human race; a fansite article mentioned a lot of upcoming information, including gameplay videos and so on about the humans. It could be guessed that ArenaNet will do similar things for the other races some time in the future. Since we will likely get a lof of new content, I would like to take the opportunity to discuss the formatting of the playable races articles.

  • Quote: the quote is currently not consistent between all races. Human and charr have quotes from the in-game description, but the other races have quotes from the Races of Tyria video, since the in-game description for them is not available. I would like to revert all quotes back to those from the Races of Tyria video. First for consistency, since that's the only way to have all quotes being from the same source right now; second because the in-game description is just repeating information we already state with more details in the articles themselves. Those quotes only work for flavor, not for information (that's what the entire rest of the article is about, and it does so better than the quotes).
  • Playable race: IMO, that section should be at the bottom of the article, not at the top. The section refers to some pieces of information that are mentioned on the history and culture sections, and doesn't make sense without previous knowledge of those pieces.
  • Gallery: we should remove those galleries. They are eventually going to have way too many images, and doesn't really make sense to break the articles' layout with them. There are many other ways for people to find the images linked to each race, and we already showcase some of them in the articles themselves.

Erasculio 10:37, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

The section playable race I put towards the top because, when I think about how I use say the profession pages on GWW, I navigate to a page like this to navigate away again. I want to know how a race plays, get easy access to their skills and other information about the gameplay. The other stuff that I've been writing recently, I might read once and then ever after scroll right past to get to the bits which are changing and are about playing the game. I've been thinking of some sort of quick link bar to pages dedicated to the race customisation options (we know of so far); skills, biography, character creation and personal story. One or other of the quick links or the existing section I'd like to be in the first screen of the page.
Gallery - I was intending to restrict it at 8 of the best concept art images related to the topic. So just today I removed one from the charr gallery. I think kept to a manageable size it is harmless and increases the visibility of the art which ArenaNet has made available. I don't think detracts from the article and it doesn't stop you from putting images throughout the article as well.
The quote. This formatting topic is really not just about the races pages and we've discussed the topic to death elsewhere without satisfactory resolution. I would prefer to have that discussion elsewhere in the hope we can resolve the other two new formatting points without the one we already know is contentious throughout the wiki already? -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 11:48, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
At least rename Playable Race to Character Creation. Playable race as the title makes no sense, and the phrase This is one of five playable races in Guild Wars 2 is plenty enough. If you're worried about having to scroll down the page to get to where you want, then there's not much point in the contents box. (Xu Davella 11:58, 5 February 2011 (UTC))
(Edit conflict) IMO, restricting the gallery to 8 images is too arbitrary, and it would be something of a headache to decide which are the "best concept art images". I would rather do the same thing we do with every other article - display images in the article as necessary, instead of having such a big page break for the galleries.
I also think these articles would become way too big if we added skill lists, biography questions and other gameplay elements. The problem is that the gameplay information before the background information looks odd - the importance of the six gods to human cultures should be stated before the comment about how the biography questions ask which god a human is blessed by, for example.
Feel free to begin a discussion about the quotes somewhere, but in the meanwhile I would like to discuss the issue of quotes on those specific articles, with the specific knowledge that we lack in-game descriptions for some of the playable races. Erasculio 12:03, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
8 - two rows of gallery - is the maximum before it get excessively long. I don't think there will be problems picking images any more than we have trouble picking images to embed in the article, neither do I agree that it disrupts the page. I think we could use galleries to format the display images on pages throughout the wiki. It is a shame that we have more images than we could possibly embed in an article and the gallery helps overcome this.
I am in no way suggesting the inclusion of biography/character creation information on this page only a summary of the themes of playing a human and links out to the details of the game mechanics. I agree the order is somewhat strange (but not excessively so) but I think it helps make these pages usable for new and existing wiki users. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 12:33, 5 February 2011 (UTC)

Tangos

Because they're awesome. And also they're kind of necessary for all skill lists we will have ever. But how do we establish race through a tango...
Color suggestions:

  • Human - white or black (gray scale)
  • Charr - deep red
  • Norn - white or black (depends on human)
  • Asura - blue
  • Sylvari - green

(Asura to blue and sylvari to green are the ones that I'm 100% sure about.) I have no ideas about the symbols though. Aqua (T|C) 00:27, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

The racial skill icons will probably have their own color theme, although we only seem to have one racial skill icon so far. Each race also has a background color during character creation, red for charr, orange for human is all I can find at the moment: [1] Manifold User Manifold Neptune.jpg 04:07, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Human seems more light-ish yellow than orange IMO. Atleast from what I've seen. Aqua (T|C) 04:49, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

More races? :O

"Right now I’m more and more thinking of the next races to be introduced in future expansion packs and that’s what I’m all excited about. But I’m not revealing any secrets yet!" - Daniel Dociu in Exclusive Interview: ArenaNet's Daniel Dociu #3. ALREADY? :O User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 23:36, 8 April 2011 (UTC)

He may be talking about non-playable races. But yes, with no surprises there it was expected ArenaNet was already dedicating time and effort to expansion concepts. - Infinite - talk 23:40, 8 April 2011 (UTC)
I remember reading something about new playable races as well as classes in the expansions as well. So far I'm guessing Tengu from Cantha and Centuar and Hylek from Elona. (But that's just me.) --Sy 02:34, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm hoping for the Kodan. --Moto Saxon 06:10, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
Already? Yay! [speculation] I agree with Sy, those seem to be the most likely races (not so sure I agree with Hylek, but it is possible). A long long time ago I had thought that Undead could be a possibility, but with how they were portrayed in EoD, I highly doubt it now. [/speculation] -User Eive Windgrace Harbinger of the Deceiver.png 06:43, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
May I point out there are a lot of sort-like topics in the archive with a big speculation stamp on it? Although you have a source, all the following comments are no more then speculation, and we don't like that here =P -- Cyan User Cyan Light sig.jpg 11:30, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
Cyan may I point out you just changed your sentence first saying " Ugh, give me more humanoid races, I don't even like the Charr and the Asura, so please don't give us the Tengu and Hylek...." hehe joke ^^ --you like that don't you..The Holy Dragons 11:34, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
though that's not really spec.. nvm :P I fail --you like that don't you..The Holy Dragons 11:34, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
May I also point out that it is legal to edit your own text, by keeping in mind that time did not overrule it? -- Cyan User Cyan Light sig.jpg 11:51, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
Sure if I'm allowed to point out I'm a fucktard. --you like that don't you..The Holy Dragons 12:06, 9 April 2011 (UTC)
I'm hoping on Centaurs because they were good guys in Nightfall. (They was even a centaurian hero!) Plus it would be kinda cool to play as a horse-type character. I also wonder why they didn't add dwarves, or did I miss out on something?Ex-Admiral Insane 11:14, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
Centaurs would need many new animations. Dwarves were basicly killed off in Eye of the North. - Giant Nuker 11:26, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
I've never given up the hope that one day ANet will bring the dwarves back as a playable race and lifted the burden of stone upon them. Dwarves FTW! Glastium | talk 12:29, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
Per Cyan's comment earlier, this doesn't really belong here. Please move this discussion to a user space or stop it. --ஸ Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig2.png 12:44, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
if this is going to be continued you're allowed to do so on my talk page. (I'm bored anywayz) --you like that don't you..The Holy Dragons 15:32, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
I know for a fact the Tengu will be playable. They have been in all campaigns (except nightfall), they currently have a heavily fortified chain of islands as a stronghold, and they would make a very good personal story in turns of tribal background (Sensali, Angchu, Caromi, and, possibly, Quetzal). The article of Dominion of Winds even stated that it won't be explorable in the INITIAL release of Guild Wars 2. If it became explorable, it obviously won't be hostile for it would be suicide trying to do that. When the Dominion of Winds becomes explorable, its inhabitants will be playable too, it only makes sense. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 71.237.138.161 (talkcontribs).

(Reset indent) You cannot "know" until its confirmed or it happens. Just because it is a logical assumption doesn't mean its guaranteed or even correct. Also, please remember that the wiki is not a forum; please do not treat it as such. Aqua (T|C) 02:28, 6 February 2012 (UTC)

Since the majority of people want Tengu, its no suprise Arenanet may have them as a playable race. But I wonder what about Kodan, Hylek, Dredge, Dwarf/Stone Summit and the like. To be sure, those races are there to HELP the progression of the more dominate races but if there is a great fan support like say for a D'Jinn, would it be better for the game to have them or not? I see the D'Jinn as more of a skill summon for the cancelled Summoner class (hey, summon a Immolated D'Jinn or a Chill Wisp) and what of that Chronomancer class? So more than likely, Tengu playable YES, other races......maybe not.
BTW, anyone notice that the GW wiki says that the D'Jinn can become "unseen" and shapeshift AND have four hands!! Sounds ssoooo Mursaat to me (or Forgotten....or Seer). peez-out Saul D'Alessio. height chart

hey, could we add this somewhere? http://i.imgur.com/kIo9z.jpg It is from here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/x37mf/all_racegender_size_comparison_sidebyside/

It would be very useful to have all the heights shown on here for people to compare. :) 173.190.27.42 03:36, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Adversaries

Should we add a link to each of the appropriate adversaries of the playable races? For example, Asura:Inquest, Norn/Sons of Svanir, etc. And if so, how exactly? — Gnarf ~ El Psy Congroo ~ 15:50, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

The Sylvari dance (for trivia)

I'd like to submit a tip for the sylvari dance. I've only made a male so I don't know if females have a different one, but I'm pretty sure (99% positive) it's the dance from "River" by AKB48. here is a link to a dance cover (so that it highlights the dance specifically): http://youtu.be/68r7I4_YGI8 (my browser is having issues with this wiki's use of external links, so I can't use the clickable link feature)
