I'd always thought it was just prounced like "attacks"

No, . is a syllable break. Not exactly a w:glottal stop, just a change of inflection between vowels (rather than a blending between vowels, that would create a dipthong). In the IPA example, the syllable break is between the au and a in gauak (those sounds aren't "added", they're in the written word).
