They say that believing in the gods "fell out of fashion" following the Zhaitan Disaster. While true in some—arguably most—cases, belief in the "human" deities continues to prosper quite prominently in underprivileged communities. My own grandparents (who have long since passed) were both fervent followers of Dwayna. Although they were both survivors of the Zhaitan Disaster, neither ever abandoned their belief.
Even when pressed with uncontested proof of Soo-Won's existence and thought "benevolence," they chose to worship the old. The familiar.
In the face of trying events such as the Zhaitan Disaster, I can imagine why some would hold on to what is known. We all do that in times of great strife. In this book, I will be interviewing individuals from all over Cantha in an effort to compile a general understanding of belief in the empire, examine its relationship to trauma, and hypothesize why many still believe in the gods of old.
