Parameter for username[edit]

Should we add it? --SharkinuUser Sharkinu sig.png 08:00, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Thought it was already added... works for me on my images though... Ariyen 08:11, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

Pretty late to the parameter party[edit]

But since we had string functions, why didn't we use the following instead of requiring users to add the parameter? (admittedly after checking with dpl all the current invocations of this template it seems theres only 2-3 missing from a few thousand files)

<includeonly>[[Category:User images|{{#if: {{{1|}}} | {{{1}}} | {{#sub:{{PAGENAME}}|5}} }}]]</includeonly>

Just curious. Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:01, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Guessing that takes the username from the filename? Would result in some incorrect ones (since people will get the filenames wrong), but it's better than now. The only thing I don't like about it is that it means we'd need to continue with the File:User username blah.jpg format... which I don't like, but it's still commonly used, so whatever. pling User Pling sig.png 19:50, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
yeah it just strips the "user_" prefix from the filename, and uses that to sort it. Its probably due to unnecessary server processing when you can get the monkey user to do it instead ;) Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:42, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
I'd say it's more due to what Pling mentioned, that we can't trust or expect all users to conform to a filename standard that isn't a policy in any case. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 20:56, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

Self link user images?[edit]

Looking through the unused files there are tons of user images. If we won't ever be deleting unused user images, which seems likely, then I think we ought to include self-linking code in this template like is used in {{ArenaNet image}} to clean up that page and make it more useful for maintenance purposes. Psycho Robot (talk) 03:27, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

I would argue that we should clean up user images the same as any other unused files. The problem is that none of the admins (including me) have any desire or incentive to clean up unused files in the first place. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 04:12, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
You lazy bums. Everyone knows that a wiki is awesome in inverse proportion to its unused files. Psycho Robot (talk) 04:41, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
its not easy judging whether a file is worth keeping or not, there is no black/white method of judging image quality or value to the user. (I thought files stuck around on the server in the background anyway?) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 11:48, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
They do, but deleting them would at least de-clutter the namespace a bit, which benefits those odd users who like browsing through all the files or who need to search through the files for something.
There's not much to judge on user images - if the user isn't using it, then it's 90% likely they don't want/need it anymore, and they either don't know or are too lazy to tag them for deletion. On GuildWiki, we ran a massive user image cleanup where we posted a notification to each user listing their unused images and warning them that the files would be deleted in 7 days, so if they wanted to keep them they should use them on a userpage. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 13:47, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
funny. I'm sure that when I've tried to undelete files on GWW before, that its just brought up the description, and not the image. Guess MW updated since I last tried it. Still, the files stick around in mw:Manual:filearchive table so we only clear up the front end, + if they want images back, then we could possibly undelete individual cases later. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 14:59, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
this is obvious, but I should probably say it anyway: images that are linked to, but not actually transcluded will appear on "unused files". i.e. File:User Chieftain Alex sig.png would appear on that list, but User Chieftain Alex sig.png would not. I've created a raw list of files from special:unusedfiles at User:Chieftain Alex/sandbox (2969 files), and a list of only user images at User:Chieftain_Alex/sandbox2#User image (980). idk if there is a quick way to filter these to see which of them appear with positive results in "whatlinkshere". -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 16:30, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Its been a while since I used AWB, but doesn't it show you somewhere in the interface a list of pages which link to the page that you currently have loaded up? Psycho Robot (talk) 19:16, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
