It's a big hole, at that. "Great" by many standards. - Infinite - talk 19:44, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
One would assume that this is the Canthan district, seeing as how Kaineng City was always collapsing under its populace's feet. Shoddy Canthan architecture and landscaping, if you ask me. 68.144.97.124 03:59, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

What if a a warrior and someone else jump in and then the warrior use vengeance to rez the other guy, then when the warr is defeated, the other guy rez him, could work? --User:Huginn--Talk 14:52, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
That might actually work. Shadowed Ritualist 15:01, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
I'd say that if you fall from a high enough point you'll get straight to defeated. User Loquay Sig.png 15:03, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Is it in town, i.e: can you use skills there at all? - Infinite - talk 16:12, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
You don't get instantly defeated from that, we know that for a fact, you get downed. And I believe you can use skills in town. Shadowed Ritualist 16:32, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
A hole? In my china-town? Why did they do this... They have basically wasted one of the six districts of the biggest most awesome city in the game to make a hole? Just to what... run over? Hope they at least have a nice china-town dungeon below it... --Toroquin User Toroquin Toro icon.png 16:13, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
They are likely saving the canthanesque update for an expansion/campaign. :) The hole is it's temporary substitute, obviously (It has no significant people that we know of, places that we know of, etc. It is just a hole, therefore it can easily be replaced without affecting anything major-- I believe this was done on purpose). - 98.19.149.175 16:23, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Uhh, what? Who said the hole is not significant? Your Canthan speculation seems highly unlikely, IP. There is, without a doubt, a significant story behind it all, we'll just have to wait and see. --SirrushUser Sirrush sig.jpg 16:31, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Here I don't see any Canthan-ish district name, here is the Great Collapse and here is the former Canthan district. One of the ways to see that the great collapse has replaced the Canthan district is by looking at the banners in the background of each picture. In the great collapse screenshot, the banners are red, they seem to resemble Balthazar, and they are north of the collapse. In the Canthan screenshot, the banners are green, they seem to resemble Melandru, and they are south of the town. In the Divinity's Reach map you could see where the Gods High Roads was, and that makes both the pictures match the 5th district clockwise, meaning the Great Collapse, which came later, must have replaced the Canthan District (there's not enough place for both of them). Yes, hopefully there will be a point with the hole, but i would have preferred if they had replaced the Ossan District, or one of the commons. --Toroquin User Toroquin Toro icon.png 18:36, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
The reason I said that is because they replaced a dense town environment with an environment 60-70% nothingness. Therefore, it is not as significant until we have word there is actually someone/something there of importance, giving that remaining 30-40% some real meaning. :) - 98.19.149.175 21:34, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
I doubt they would make this hole for no reason. I bet there's either some Dynamic Event with something popping out of the hole or it's a dungeon of some sort. Waar Kijk Je NaarUser Waar Kijk Je Naar sig.png 21:37, 8 March 2011 (UTC)
I actually wouldn't be surprised if Blimm's Bone Guardian thing caused this. Remember that GoA said that there were massive caverns of crypts under the city...suppose they collapsed? What would you call the resulting hole, eh? Zolann The IrreverentUser Zolann The Irreverent Mysterious Summoning Stone.png 19:23, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
The bones could've supported that entire section, and with their removal it sounds extremely plausible indeed. - Infinite - talk 19:27, 4 April 2011 (UTC)

Surely a ranger and his pet could just jump in, and then while downed the ranger could res his pet and his pet could then res him. sorted. Actually an interview during the beta stated the game designers made it impossible to jump into.212.139.255.91 14:10, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

The hole[edit]

Seeing as the information on this topic is extremely outdated:

-You can't jump in the hole by normal means. There's an invisible wall.
-As of April 27th, first GW2 Beta Weekend Event for pre-purchasers, there's a small hole in the terrain that enables you to fall through. You land in a solid area, but from there you can only jump on another solid area that will kill you [edit: this area is also at water level, I haven't noticed it before], or in the hole itself, which is filled with water, most likely a dev oversight [see screenshots], in which they set the water level at X height for the entire map.
-There's a "Cave Up" sign on the hole. I haven't found a way to get in it yet, and the terrain hole I found doesn't grant access to it.
I'm putting some screens for you all. Please remember that, being a beta, I reported this issue and it'll probably be fixed by release.
From this point, run straight forward. If you just take a small step, you'll fall in an area where you can't get out of. It's probably best if you use a speed boost.

This is where you'll land on, slightly above a solid object, which you can fall to.

This is the character already in the hole. As I said, it's filled with water. You can't actually see the water until you are under it, but all other effects of being swimming above water or getting out of it (screen with droplets of water, can't use skills) are working. The buildings you see are the same you can see on the bridge.

This is the bottom of it, viewed from close to the surface. I didn't bother putting up screenshots of the bottom because there's nothing there, no easter eggs or anything. You can get trapped in some parts of the terrain because they are passable through one side but not from the other.

See the "Cave Up" sign on the minimap? It points to there. I couldn't get in it because it's above the water level. Perhaps I can later, when I get a teleport skill? We will see.

Oh, added this just now: it exemplifies what I told you about the water not being meant to be there: there are birds flying in it.

IMO, the cave up icon indicates that it's intended to be explorable in the future (the same can be said for the Divinity Reach Crypts, which has a cave down - just off of Skull Plaza underneath Grenth High Road). So you probably just found an unintended hole which leads to an incomplete area. Konig/talk 01:01, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
I forgot to add in my first post that I do think it'll be used for future event(s) in some form, but for now it's empty. Concerning the cave up icon, I'm actually puzzled. There's always a pair: cave up someplace on the map, cave down on another place. There actually is a cave down icon, and it's near the center of the map, closer to the northern plaza. I couldn't find a way to get into it either. It seems too early for them to add something like that, unless the event/area is to be accessed at or near the release. Onoros 02:00, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Actually, based on my observation, cave down and cave up icons are in the same place - it just depends on whether you're under the icon's placement, or above it on the z-axis (e.g., you go through a cave which you note has the cave down icon, once you pass it and go downwards, it becomes cave up). Same goes for ramp up/ramp down, elevator up/elevator down, and go down/go up icons. It's just means of saying "you can go up/down a level here based on your current z-axis positioning" Konig/talk 02:15, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
I checked, you are right. So a "cave up" sign on that level indicates that there's something above, or there will be, and I wonder what it is.

Dungeon[edit]

During the Beta there was a Dungeon Icon next to The Great Collapse. Shouldnt this be added?

It was a "cave up" icon, not a dungeon icon. I think it's still there? Konig/talk 21:56, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

In-game reference to it being a Canthan district[edit]

I've only found a reference to it being an Arts district, does anyone know where in-game it says it used to be a Canthan district (specifically this district)? Vahkris (talk) 19:53, 29 July 2013 (UTC)

Not as far as I know. There has been some discussion on the forum bout it. It was planned to be the canthan district originally, but some chief at ncsoft was offended saying that it was trying to mix asian cultures, wich is ridiculious in his opinion. This is supposed to be the real (out of lore reason) for the great Collapse. The guy, according to the story left ncsoft shortly after anyways, but there was no way back cause the bwe's had started.Ranique (talk) 19:41, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
"Elli: You just mentioned the different districts in Divinity’s Reach. What about the district of Cantha?"
"Ree: When they built Divinity’s Reach, they built it rather quickly. They built the city on a site that seemed to have a strong foundation. They didn’t have a lot of time or a lot of choice when they realised that a part of the site wasn’t stable and a part of it collapsed. One of the tour guides in the city has a lot of story of the district of Cantha."
TowerTalk interview, I think they are treating that as non-canon and that it was always the Arts district.--Relyk ~ talk < 20:08, 30 July 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, I heard the interview, but that could easily be something that changed during development or before release, since it happened pre-release. Since it's been a year since it came out, I think we should just leave it as the arts district and only reference the Canthan district in Trivia, unless someone can find an in-game reference to it being Canthan. I don't think one exists. Vahkris (talk) 21:04, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Area vs instance[edit]

Honestly, this probably should have been the main The Crown Pavilion article and the instanced zone should be "The Crown Pavilion (instance)", because that zone is going away and this one is remaining. Vahkris (talk) 20:31, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

Documentation of the Great Collapse[edit]

Does anybody have screenshots of when it was just a hole? I think it'd be useful to add those as a historical reference.

New user: I agree with this. In fact, The Great Collapse just redirects to The Crown Pavilion now, without the original page--can you not keep the original up and just have links to what it became instead of delete it from history? I thought that these things were to keep historical record of the game and its changes, like pretty much every other continually-updated game's wiki. Just my opinion / request for original.
