Talk:Renown Heart NPC

Should this have a link/page by itself considering how brief the explanation is? Could be moved or added to one of the existing pages, I'd do so but I'm still new to this.--Dendrik 03:12, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
- The size of a the page doesn't relay its importance, this page is linked to by every Renown heart NPC page and area containing the NPC--Relyk 05:02, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
Name change[edit]
Not sure I like it being renown NPC, Renown heart NPC was more specific, "renown NPC" is just to general for me. - Doodleplex 14:44, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
- Agreed. Most people know them by 'hearts', not just 'renown'. —Ventriloquist 17:10, 2 November 2017 (UTC)
I can't even remember what the ingame interface calls them nowadays."Complete all renown hearts for all major areas in the Crystal Desert region." Yeah this has to be moved back. -Chieftain Alex 23:10, 2 November 2017 (UTC)- Hi guys, I just renamed this page yesterday. Maybe I should have discussed this beforehand, but I was too lazy... As far as I know, there are two compelling reasons to name these NPCs "Renown NPCs":
- It's shorter and elegantly avoids capitalization issues with the term "Renown Heart", because nobody is really sure whether this is a common noun or something else. That page is currently named Renown Heart, but the "Renown NPC"s were called "Renown heart NPC"s, with a lower-case h, which was confusing. Even the developers had no idea how to capitalize "Renown Heart". When you search the Game Release Notes thread in the (old) forums, you'll find all sorts of variations of the term, like "renown heart", "Renown Heart", and even "renown-heart" quite frequently. Fortunately, the game itself calls them "renown hearts" nowadays in running text, like in several Path of Fire achievement descriptions, for example the Heart of Gold achievement, which Chieftain Alex pointed out. I'm just not sure how many readers/users/editors are aware of that.
- I searched the gw2.dat text files with something like
grep -ri renown Strings/English
to find out whether the term "renown heart NPC" is used in-game anywhere and it turns out it isn't. The game calls these NPCs "renown region karma merchants" (example: Cowrie League Metal Crate item description), which would be a horrible lengthy page name, or just "renown merchants" (example: Page of Spearmarshal Helm Recipes description), which is slightly better. And then there is this nice piece of text somewhere in the game files:Renown NPCs become karma vendors once you have completed their tasks. Karma vendors are indicated by a filled gold heart on your mini map.
Now the issue with this sentence is that I'm not sure whether it actually appears in-game, but it definitely sounds like one of those level-up tutorial messages intended for new players. Still, I thought this sounds really nice and isn't too different from the old page name.
- So these were my reasons for moving the page. -- Blackice (talk) 10:02, 3 November 2017 (UTC)
- For future reference, if what you want to move is a fairly significant game content, stick a {{move}} tag on top first and wait to see if anybody says anything before moving the page. Anyway, shorter is not always better, and if needed, a redirect can be created, though I do agree it does seem to be slightly all over the place. Seeing as how both today's patch notes and the Spearmashal recipe page item calls the NPCs "Renown merchants" (the tasks the NPCs gave were always referred to as "renown heart" I believe, not the NPCs themselves) I'm a fan of either that or "Renown Heart Merchant" as it's sort of a happy medium between their long mechanical name and makes it clear exactly what they're apart of. - Doodleplex 23:55, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
- Hey, I'm kinda open to the idea of readding the term "Heart" into the page title. Maybe it wasn't a great move on my part to remove it in the first place. I guess if some reader lands on this page, he or she'd want to see "Heart" in large letters somewhere here. Also, "Renown NPC" could be confused with other NPCs that can be interacted with to fill hearts. "Renown Heart Merchant" sounds really nice, but I'm—again—not sure whether that's the right capitalization, because it's most likely not a proper name. In-game, the floating overhead text for NPCs, and the map icon descriptions use title case for the most part, but that doesn't mean this wiki should do the same thing, or does it? -- Blackice (talk) 23:49, 14 November 2017 (UTC)
- Okay so after poking about, it looks like there is no overhead text for these NPC. So based on what Alex mentioned, which is achievement text for completing hearts in PoF maps(not to mention Local Hero also says "renown heart"), I think it's probably best to move it back to Renown Heart NPC, that's what most players are going to call them, simply enough. - Doodleplex 21:58, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
