Talk:List of fish

I came here today to see if I could replicate my giant geeky fish spreadsheet to share with other like-minded completionists. I would really love for this to be a filtered table to select the attributes/conditions. I read what I could find about adding filters, but it's a little beyond me at this point. Is there someone more experienced out there who would do this for us? My spreadsheet has been really handy for being able to sort to see what is available where I am and what I need to catch it. I also have a column for checking off the ones I already have - so bonus if we can add the api key component for that. Sophianne Persephoni Ming (talk) 16:27, 19 March 2022 (UTC)

So one huge table where the current location headings are shifted into an own column? Filter categories are locations, fishing holes, baits, time, fishing power? Sounds pretty straight forward to me, I'll try to add this. Did I miss anything?
The API check might be a bit tricky, I guess there we have to check both for the normal and the avid achievement. So for ~250 fish we have to assign ~500 achievement API bits, I'm not sure yet if the page manages to load all this or if we get a template timeout. Edit: Should be fine, I could easily get all according achievement bits in a quick test. --Tolkyria (talk) 16:54, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
Okay, finished the first draft, see my sandbox. --Tolkyria (talk) 20:37, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
Added. --Tolkyria (talk) 23:18, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
That is FANTASTIC! I hope other players find it helpful, too. Thank you! -- Sophianne Persephoni Ming (talk) 16:52, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm glad you like it. Just let me know if there are any ideas for further improvements. --Tolkyria (talk) 19:10, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
It's very helpful, thanks a lot. There's volcanic fish in Ascalon -> Fireheart Rise too. Where the lava is. --85.199.90.50 19:01, 17 April 2022 (UTC)

Fishing hole - Any[edit]

The only confusion there might be would be with the Any category for fishing holes. Any Fine fish can be found in any fishing holes at their respective maps right ? Well but when you search based on those respective map fishing holes you will not find any Fine fish. --DiegoDeLaHouska (talk) 02:28, 20 November 2022 (UTC)

Feedback 01/06/22[edit]

Feedback from a Reddit thread on what's supposedly missing from page. ~Sime 23:57, 5 January 2023 (UTC)

"I really miss option to show few results together, like Fish from 2 different nodes or 2 different daytimes. And i also miss NOT filter. To hide some specific."
So wiki users want AND, OR and NOT filter options at the same time? Are the users able to handle it properly?
For example (filter1 OR filter2) AND filter3 is not the same as filter1 OR (filter2 AND filter3), or as an example from this page: (Rare OR Exotic) AND Ascalon is different from Rare OR (Exotic AND Ascalon).
I don't think the wiki filter should allow such free filter usage, which could easily lead to incorrect and unwanted filter results, ultimately just leading to frustration and a terrible wiki user experience.
However, if we are able to restict it, why not... as pointed out by the reddit post, it would be nice to use an OR within a "filter category" when we globally have AND as filter option. But currently filter categories don't exist internally, they exist only formatting-wise by using labels and line breaks. I have no idea if we can modify the widget such that it can handle filter categories and use another filter option within it. On default all filters would belong to the same category, but the parameter filters would allow a "<category>" seperator which introduces a new filter category. For example here in the fish table: global filter is AND, local filter categories are: "Rarity", "Location", "Fishing Hole",... with the filter OR. This would allow something like (Rare OR Exotic) AND Ascalon.

Yeah I was not sure about the feasibility but wanted to forward the feedback (since the OP originally complained but didn't provide it till I asked). I do think the AND (or is it OR?) filter currently should be changed to allow multiple inputs from one category (like picking New Kainengy City AND Ruins of Orr fish). ~Sime 16:08, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
I think you mean OR: New Kainengy City OR Ruins of Orr. Since both locations exclude each other, using AND would be the empty result. That was somehow my point above, they get mixed up pretty soon, we would really need a safe concept that avoids such mistakes. --Tolkyria (talk) 19:14, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
