Sounds DAMN good. Can't wait for the game. --Hullu 23:35, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Except the "you will spend hundreds of hours levelling a character" part, and possibly the equipment part. One of the biggest attractions in original guild wars was the low leveling times.Tambora 01:53, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Not really, to be honest. In PvE, it's much about achieving exprience points, levels and items. I was horrified about the idea as well, since PvP would be destroyed by that. But by reading the PvP part, they say that when going to PvP arena, you will be the correct level with correct items and skills. Basically it's just more content to the PvE side. And anyway, after such a successful game having the right standards to make the PvP fair, why would they go mess it now? Nothing to worry about. ;) --Hullu 02:19, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

"Hundreds of hours leveling a character" does not always mean a character would get stronger because of this. It's possible that you may get no effects leveling past a certain point, and the level is then just a status symbol, like a title in original GW. Cress Arvein User Cress Arvein sig.JPG 02:31, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
I do hope the levelling system is like what you described, with the character's statistical power capped out at some point. My general feeling on this, though, is that mentioning as much as possible how important a part of the original guild wars it is. it does seem from the sidekick descriptions and such that there would be differences in power, which would be bad for the game. (And the low level cap in PvP, as well as the ease of getting max level equipment, makes quite a difference in guild wars, as it gets rid of a lot of grind, allows people to start a lot more characters and get then to max power, and allows more flexibility in where a character chooses to go.)Tambora 02:51, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Guild Wars 2 will have the kind of extensive character advancement appropriate to a persistent world RPG. It is our priority to avoid forcing players into the grind-based gameplay that too often accompanies a high level cap.
And:
Am I going to have to endlessly grind to be the most powerful I can be?
No. The amount of power you get at higher levels will reduce significantly. At some point you will not get any more powerful by gaining more levels.
This is from both FAQ's (on GW2W and GW.com), and the GW2 article on GW2W also says they're gonna add a power cap. I don't know about the hundreds of hours, but if you're finished with leveling before the end of the game, in those hundreds of hours, without grinding, I'm happy :D --Sir Bertrand 07:16, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, and this sounds pretty damn good. Basically, you can still compare your exprience points and timeplayed with your friend, but that doesn't mean the one with more experience would be more powerful. Sounds just about right. Bringing both PvE and PvP elements to the top. Way to go! --Hullu 13:33, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm glad Anet's finally trying to keep the sinking ship called their fanbase afloat. This has rekindled my interest in GW2, and I'm sure it has for many others. Calor Talk 16:19, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

They've got my money. =) --TalkPeople of Antioch 01:57, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

One thing: There should be the possibility of designing your own stuff ingame... like getting some blacksmithing done by yourself, thus modding or completely inventing a new armor and or weapon, i think they could incorporate the engine IF they really wanted to, designs could be saved on local game databas (your PC) or just bought when you get the game for your account, like 20 designs per account, you can buy more! :D i think it'd be way awesome.... OOOH, and custom dying of stuff, way cool, if you could dye anywhere at any proportions, it would make a wyvern armor look interesting lol... ---- Someone get this idea to the higher powers, please, Cheers ~Muscolo

As long as the leveling isn't as boring as World of Warcraft I'm fine with it. --Conan The Doommaker 04:05, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Clarifications from Jeff Strain/ArenaNet[edit]

When attempting to translate this article, poke and I ran into some difficulties, so at the time I submitted an email to Regina asking for clarification on certain points. She noted that it might take a while, but Jeff got the chance to follow up recently, so here's the results (and yes, the IP edits on the article making these changes are me):

Original Email[edit]

Hi Regina, here's that list of translation issues I talked with you about. I'd greatly appreciate any insights you or Jeff can provide regarding appropriate translations:

In item #3,

"The camera will move closer to your character so that combat will be more dramatic."

Is this intended to mean that the camera will always be closer to the character (as in, a move from where it was in GW1) or that it will move in dynamically when your character engages in combat?

In item #4,

"For example (simplified), a dragon destroys the important town bridge. All players within the zone, regardless of being in a group or not, can now fight the beast. If the attack fails [sic], NPCs from the town will try to reconstruct the bridge."

Is "if the attack fails" referring to the dragon's attack, the players' attack on the dragon, or was that wording entirely incorrect?

In item #6,

"It is certain that you will be leveling your character over hundreds of hours."

It's unclear from the german text whether this was intended to mean that people would be required to spend hours leveling, or simply that the possibility for hundreds of hours' worth of leveling was available. Any clarification here would be nice.

Those are the largest questions in translation we've come across; feel free to look over the current working copy linked above and see if there are any other glaring flaws that we might not have noticed or been aware of, we (poke and I) would appreciate any extra input to help provide a better resource for wiki visitors.

Thanks, ~Aiiane

Response[edit]

Hi Aiiane:

Sorry this took absolutely forever to get back to you, but Jeff's been super busy with NCsoft stuff and he hadn't had time to sit down to sift through emails.

Here are his responses:

3. The default camera position will be closer to your character in GW2.

4. The dragon attacks the bridge, and the players can defend it. If the players fail to defend the bridge, the bridge will be destroyed. If the bridge is destroyed, NPCs from town will come out to repair it.

6. The latter interpretation is correct. There are hundreds of hours of leveling available in the game.

Thanks,

When?[edit]

when will the next guild wars be released i think that is a Question we all would like to know? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 96.28.88.114 (talk • contribs) at 08:35, 17 January 2009 (UTC).

It's something we'd all like to know because none of us know the answer yet, hence none of us can answer that question for you. --User Pling sig.png Pling \ talk 15:42, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

New information?[edit]

So is there anything new here? I don't see anything I haven't seen before.

No. This whole article isn't "new", so... --- Ohaider!-- talkpage 21:03, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

only thing that doesnt sound thrilling to me[edit]

The new combat system will keep the tactical depth of the original Guild Wars but will do so with fewer skills so it will be easier for beginners. With easily recognizable effects you will be able to understand abilities even in the heat of the battle and without the need to read through a description....i loved how the skills were complicated because it gave the game more of a challenge in making builds.....unlike others were its like oh throw this rock do 10 dmg...it was alot cooler sounding and yea >.> The preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.150.27.87 (talk • contribs) at 20:07, 19 August 2009 (UTC).

I completely agree... But... I will admit that there were a few skills (namely the identical ones in both proph and factions) that I wouldn't mind seeing gone...Τελέως 22:20, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
I agree, this rocked me a little when I read it. If anything, they should make more in depth skill systems and more skills.. also.. I hope they keep professions instead of making race the equivalent to that... Reez 20:44, 24 Spetember 2009 (UTC)

Sylvari age[edit]

Only 100 years before the story of Guild Wars 2 the first adult Sylvari hatched out of their cocoons which grow at a magical oak tree in the Arbor Bay.

Huh, isn't the oldest sylvari 25 years old? That's what I've heard anyways, a bit too lazy to find many sources, but here's one (http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/guild-wars-2-pax-2009-t992.html):

...in reference to Ventari's Tree as the place of the origin of the Sylvari (only 25 years prior to the beginning of GW2, apparently). --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Kendil (talk) .

Maybe it's a mistranslation, or maybe they changed their minds about how old the Sylvari are. -- User Gordon Ecker sig.png Gordon Ecker (talk) 05:14, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

The default camera position[edit]

"3. The default camera position will be closer to your character in GW2"

What the hell does this mean? Will we still be able to zoom out as far as in GW1? I don't remember any "default" camera position in GW1, so that statement is meaningless to me.

To tell the truth, the implication of having to have the camera even closer is very unsettling to me. I wasn't able to zoom out as far as I wanted in GW1 already. 82.149.1.199 18:00, 26 October 2009 (UTC)

I noticed in the first Guild Wars that when you zoomed out, your character would appear to be a scary kind of alpha figure. Perhaps they are changing it to make it appear better. However, I am not sure why the default camera position will be closer. They could be encouraging us to take a better look at our characters so that we can see ourselves much closer than usual. Eye candy, anyone? - Kroff

i dont like this fact =_= ... i wanna zoom AWAY from my ugly character.not closer.--Neil2250 , The Zoologist User Neil2250 sig icon5.png 13:52, 14 February 2010 (UTC)

Companions and "Side-Kicking"[edit]

Instead every player will be able to have one companion who won't take up a slot within the group. The developers will give you the alternative to invest part of your power into your companion instead of your character - similar to a pet or a hero. Seriously? --Itay Alon 16:38, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

Souldnt this be changed--Knighthonor 16:41, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
It won't, but arena.net have forgot about this article... --Itay Alon 16:56, 1 May 2010 (UTC)
This is no longer correct, since they'd dropped the companion. Ramei Arashi 00:12, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Five Gods[edit]

"The White Mantle, a religion adoring the assumed-dead magical beings, wants to overthrow the Queen and those who follow the Five Gods."
Five Gods? There are six. Kormir ascended. Also, is the White Mantle an organization as well as a religion or just the former? 198.174.37.44 02:56, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Organization of a religion. But it doesn't matter anyway, this information no longer applies to the game.-- Xu Davella 03:01, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
I think they're supposed to be a smaller but still existing group. Anyway, should it be changed to "The White Mantle, an organization adoring the assumed-dead magical beings, wants to overthrow the Queen and those who follow the Six Gods." ? 198.174.37.44 01:00, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
It's a paraphrase, I doubt the article initially read the Six Gods, and someone mistook it for the Five Gods. Though the translation in general may need touching up (I can't find the original article), I doubt the amount of gods mentioned would be different. And on that note, I actually think this article is fully redundant at this point in time. - Infinite - talk 01:08, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
