So far the only thing I found that will work in the upgrade slot is a Medallion. The Crest do not work, nor does the Jewelry upgrade, Gems, and runes. Even though it is like having a Level 78 Ascended Backpack you are Limited to what you can upgrade it with.

Crests won't work because the item isn't level 80. Runes don't work because they only go in armor, and back items are not armor.

Gemstones are universal upgrades like medallions/crests, so they should work (except for orbs, since they also require level 80). Jewels should also work because they go in both trinkets and back items, but again, you can't use jewels that require level 80. —Dr Ishmael 23:06, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

A bit late for this comment but I found L65 "Brilliant" jewels to work. Exotic Level 80 pack is +22 , +16 on minor stats . Exquisite L80 jewels are +25 to major stat and +15 to minor stat . Total for an exotic L80 backpiece is +47 for major stat and +31 for minor stat (assuming it is the same stat type as the backpiece). This is +32 for major stat and +18 for minor stat so you need +15 and +13 for minor stat. An "Embellished Brilliant" jewel would put you ahead (Embellished Brilliant is +21 for major stat and +13 for minor stat). Total for this with a L65 "Embellished Brilliant" jewel is +53 for major stat and +31 for minor stat. • Lvl 80 Rare Berserkers Spineguard of Ruby with Exquisite Ruby Jewel = +51/+34/+34
  • Personal story reward - quite low effort compared to the rest provided you're doing the story anyway.
• Lvl 78 Exotic Berserker's Elegant Armorsmith's Backpack of Ruby = +53/+31/+31
  • Which is this article's item + Embellished Brilliant Ruby Jewel (stats are quite weak even though exotic just because you can't use the lvl 80 upgrades). Very quick to level up crafting.
• Lvl 80 Exotic Advanced Spinal Blades of Ruby = +55/+36/+36
  • Again using Exquisite Ruby Jewel. Expensive because you're probably going to end up promoting blade shards in the mystic forge - easily +30G.
• Lvl 80 Ascended Backpack (e.g. Beta Fractal Capacitor (Infused)) = +63/+40/+40
  • Expensive in terms of ectos, fractal relics

Given the amount of effort or expense (for a new player at least) put into obtaining any of the other options, this crafted backpack is pretty good imo. -Chieftain Alex 09:14, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
