You haven't always been a miner?

I joined the Sentinels after my warband got wiped out by a Branded siege devourer. I got assigned to a mining detail. Any way I can put a knife to the throat of the Dragonbrand is fine by me.

How does mining do that?

Creatures are always pouring out of the Dragonbrand. Scientists at Varimhold are studying the Branded ore to find some kind of weakness. Fighting fire with fire, I guess. So, I give them all I can find.
