Should we[edit]

Make a clear distinction between GW2-oriented userboxes and GW1-oriented userboxes? Things will probably be interchangeable mostly, but with new professions, their colours and new threats, the colours might end up clashing, etc. Perhaps move all GW1-oriented userboxers to "Template:User GW1 .."? Caution: This precedure will take MASSIVE botting work. - Infinite - talk 13:24, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Also, the icons for GW1 need clear indication; this is a chaotic mess at this point in time. (I can't even contain my need to fix it.) - Infinite - talk 13:27, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Should we even have gw1-oriented userboxes? Do we even need to have so bloody many? I bet, for example {{User Asura}}, {{User Asura2}}, {{User Asura College of Statics}} for instance can all become one template with parameters determining the design/text/image.
But I guess I'm not one to talk, since imo, there's 100% no reason for probably 90% of the userboxes, both here and on gw1w. -- Konig/talk 23:12, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
There are a lot of userboxes I question the value of, but that is a moot point. They are too many to count and just ditching them in 3 major categories (gw1, gw2 and misc.) would at least sort them somewhat. - User:Infinite on Wii 84.31.15.202 00:01, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Personally, I would prefer if userboxes were kept in the user namespace or deleted. User boxes occupy space in the template space, which is supposed to be a collection of templates to be used in the main space. I would have no problem is a vast majority of user box templates that are in the template main space are either moved or just deleted. In fact, the only template that I feel is (remotely) appropriate to be in the main space is the {{Userbox}} template. Aquadrizzt (talk)(contribs) 00:08, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
I have never cared for user boxes and still dont care, but as long as they don't clash in naming with regular templates, there can be as many of them as people want to create. It is not like we can "run out of space". Obviously, all should be this category or a subcategory. --Xeeron 11:17, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
It's their use that is clashing currently. For example the professions userboxes; someone decided it was appropriate to have GW1 profession userboxes on GW2W. Now we face a problem intoducing the GW2 profession userboxes. (I think profession-oriented userboxes are fine, personally, as it can give a quick overview of one's characters, without having to search for it. Alternatively, you can just put in text what characters you posess.) All GW1 userboxes *should* get deleted, whereas all non-GW2(W)-oriented userboxes *should* get moved to more appropriate locations (such as userspace, which is what I resorted to currently). It just involves some sort of discussion, obviously. :P Infinite - talk 13:17, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Now that it's still manageable, should we move/delete all GW1-oriented userboxes (to an appropriate sub-category)? - Infinite - talk 14:39, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Move those that clash with GW2 names and put all (moved or not) into the proper category imho. --Xeeron 22:55, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

World (Server) Templates[edit]

Wouldn't it be nice to also have user templates you can use to show in what World you are playing? I edited an existing template to one for Far Shiverpeaks on my own userpage. Since most Worlds are GW1 regions we could use the GW1 loading screens as icons. For the Worlds that don't use a GW1 region I'm sure we can find fitting icons. (Btw I know the icon in my self-created template doesn't fit entirely but that can probably be fixed)

Also is there a way we can create userbox templates ourselves or isn't that something anyone can do? (pretty new to wiki editing, sorry if it's a noob question) 08Ray 21:56, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

There are 96 servers, don't make 96 templates. However, it should be possible to write a single template that takes the world name as input. And you can create templates yourself, I don't know why you'd think you can't. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 22:05, 10 July 2012 (UTC)
Yeah there are a lot of servers I guess, meaning that would be a lot of templates. Just noticed someone else also created a template for a World Template:User Sorrow’s Furnace Could you tell me how I could save my own template? I looked in the help section here but couldn't find info about it and on Wikipedia (which I assume works in the same way) they talk about creating a new page in the Template section, but I don't see where I can do that here. 08Ray 22:28, 10 July 2012 (UTC)

Somebody have access to rename a template?[edit]

Template:User VALET-123Golem is outdated it needs to become Template:User VAL-A Golem. Also would it be all right if I edit the Charr Ash template to make it readable? Right now its too dark. Ramei Arashi 17:34, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Like with articles, you can use the move option to move pages to a more appropriate location (in this case a rename of a template). As for adjusting colours, feel free to be bold. If someone liked the old colours better they should start a discussion to see if users can find a consensus (though I am going to assume no one will dislike your choice of colours). - Infinite - talk 17:41, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Ok. I moved and edited the template. Ramei Arashi 17:53, 24 July 2012 (UTC)

Cleaning[edit]

I would really like to clean this up, but I'd like some feedback before I get all bold with the category.

  • Do we need three virtually identical userboxes to let us know that a user is a "guardian at heart"?
  • Would it be inappropriate to use parameters being to create templates like {{User Profession|Guardian}}?
  • Do/should we allow userboxes that aren't related to the game, the fandom or even at least functional, like Template:User Evil or Template:User Hasuserboxes?
  • User categories: Yes, No ... or something?
  • Is there any issue with having a few subcategories in this category to organize these templates?

I don't use userboxes, but I can't stand this mess and would like to clean it up and create an organized directory before launch. — Rari User Rari sig.png 23:23, 22 August 2012 (UTC)

I agree with you. I was half of a mouse click away from deleting 2 of those Guardian templates a short while back... But then I lowered my internal priority rating of userboxes and walked away from it.
Not sure what you mean by this, however: User categories: Yes, No ... or something? Burfo User Burfo avatar.jpg 23:30, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
Some of these categorized users into categories (though these aren't shown on my sandbox.) For instance, Category:Users who are rangers and Category:Users who are kodan. Are these categories acceptable, or should they be limited (or removed completely). — Rari User Rari sig.png 23:34, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
There's a stalled discussion on the CommPort about userbox categories. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 23:43, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
Ah, thanks Ish. Infinite mentions that "user categories were sorted well before Guild Wars 2 even had an assumed release date" - do you know if that is a reference to Category:Users or is there actually a "plan" for this somewhere? Dealing with the categories is obviously not a necessary part of cleaning, but it is something that seemed to me would be well addressed along with the other issues. — Rari User Rari sig.png 23:59, 22 August 2012 (UTC)
