Bengt Tovasson
Bengt Tovasson
“I have some personal stake in seeing Mabon's legacy upheld, even if that means bearing some of his burdens.
Bengt Tovasson is the Fourth Veil of the Mesmer Collective, follower of Raven, and father of Kurt Bengtsson. He sends a letter to Kasmeer Meade on behalf of the Collective, which can be found on a table in the Dead End. He later assists Councillor Ludo and Livia in the Tyrian Alliance's assault on Bava Nisos.
Biography[edit]
Early years[edit]
While Bengt Tovasson was showing talent as a budding norn mesmer and was learning the ways of Raven, he came across a curious magic user sealing an anomaly in the Shiverpeak Mountains. After aiding the disguised stranger, Bengt was invited into the Mesmer Collective where the stranger held the high position of Fifth Veil. He rose through the ranks over the years, eventually becoming a member of the Collective's inner council. When Bengt's recruiter revealed his true self and identity as Mabon to the Collective, Bengt stood by him as a close friend and pupil.[1][2] As time passed, Bengt eventually became the Fourth Veil of the Collective working directly under Mabon. At some point he fathered a son named Kurt Bengtsson who would join the Durmand Priory in adulthood.
Living World Season 1[edit]
In 1326 AE, Bengt wrote an encouraging letter to one of the Collective's newest recruits, Kasmeer Meade, who had become impoverished after her father's untimely demise due to her brother Kyle Meade's actions and the Ministry seizing the family's assets in the resulting scandal. Bengt promised Kasmeer that her status in the Collective would remain unchanged despite her financial hardships because an enigmatic sponsor had vouched for her talents and most importantly her discretion. He also assured Kasmeer that the Collective would provide her with a reference should any would-be employer require such when considering hiring her.
Janthir Wilds[edit]
In 1338 AE, Countess Anise wrote a letter to the Mesmer Collective's inner and outer councils, asking for any available Veil to assist her in exploring the dangerous isle which had the ruined mursaat city of Bava Nisos. Bengt answered the call, travelling to Bava Nisos to assist the Tyrian Alliance in dealing with the titan and spectral threats within as well as to keep an eye on Livia whose rogue actions with her recent theft of the Scepter of Orr had made the Alliance uneasy about her trustworthiness. Upon meeting with the Pact Commander, Bengt admitted to having heard his fellow Collective members Anise and Kasmeer gossip about the Commander's prowess for the past decade and could easily recognize the Commander's looks based on the provided information. He also pointed out that he had a personal reason for travelling to Bava Nisos aside from Anise's request: he intended to uphold Mabon's legacy and handle the fallout of his late mentor's burdened choices from the past.
Bengt accompanied Councillor Ludo, Livia, and the Commander on a push deeper into the ruined city which had been fused with the titan Saevus Saxum whose life Mabon had spared in the past but whose actions had caused the spreading titan threat in Janthir. During this time Bengt and Livia had a heated discussion about Bengt's purpose for being in the city with Livia questioning if his main duty was to help defeat the titan or to deal with her if she stepped out of line with the scepter.[3]
The Alliance's army encountered various threats along the way, including the monstrous Lextalion the Merciless originating from the fused souls of the mursaat's sacrificial victims to the keystone who had been released upon the shard's cracking, as well as Saevus's exposed organs such as his lungs and heart. As the party split up to assault the titan's organs simultaneously on multiple fronts, Bengt's forces targeted the northern lung and ultimately managed to damage it to weaken the massive titan. The parties rendezvoused at Saevus's injured heart to celebrate their victory once the battle was over with Bengt expressing relief that Livia had turned out to be a trustworthy ally after all. However, the Alliance's forces were soon forced to retreat when the titan used magic seeping from the open Mists Gate near the heart to regenerate himself and to expel them from the heart chamber.[4][5]
The Tyrian Alliance was ultimately successful in defeating Saevus for good when the Commander's party, assisted by Mabon's ghost, entered the Mists Gate to deal with the problem within and having Mabon use the Scepter of Orr to seal the gate permanently from the other side to prevent any more magic or demonic forces from coming through. Although Bengt did not accompany the party on their dangerous journey into the Mists, he nevertheless boasted about dealing with Lextalion and exorcising the angry spirits of the mursaat's victims so they could find rest at last, and how he intended to tell a great tale about it to his son one day.[6]
