Better Salvaging Through Diet?[edit]

Using a higher quality Salvage Kit can enhance the odds of getting more/better materials from a salvaging operation. Is there any food or booster or condition that can further increase the chances? Separ (talk) 22:35, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Salvaging Inscriptions Clarification Request[edit]

The page says: "On very rare occasions exotics can also return the inscription required to make it."

It's unclear whether this is saying that the inscriptions are a rare drop (i.e. you have a low probability of obtaining one when salvaging) or that the items from which inscriptions can be salvaged are rare (i.e. most items will never give you an inscription no matter how many you salvage). I could imagine either or both being true, but I don't know either of them for a fact, so I am unable to write a clarification myself. --Felbryn (talk) 19:11, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

Clarified. It only applies to weapons with non-craftable prefixes, and it's a rare chance to get the inscription. In the future it may also apply to armor with non-craftable prefixes, to get the insignia, but that's just an assumption until ascended armor crafting is implemented. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 19:27, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

I've salvaged a number of exotic weapons with non-craftable prefixes, and in my experience, the inscription ONLY has a chance to drop if, additionally, the WEAPON is non-craftable. That is to say, I crafted a number of pearl weapons using non-craftable inscriptions, and when I salvaged them, I never got a single inscription. When I salvage looted weapons with non-craftable prefixes, I frequently receive the inscription. My sample size was not very large, but this may bear looking into. 76.100.66.158 15:08, 5 August 2014 (UTC)

Ascended Items[edit]

I attempted to salvage some Ascended items I bought with laurels, got as drops, or crafted and was unable to salvage any. Can't prove a negative. Has anyone salvaged any Ascended items? Separ (talk) 17:58, 25 April 2014 (UTC)

Proven by querying my API database:
select flag_nosalvage, count(*)
from item_tb
where item_rarity = 'Ascended'
  and item_type in ('Armor','Back','Trinket','Weapon')
group by flag_nosalvage;
Result:
flag_nosalvage count(*)
1 958
All ascended equipment is non-salvageable. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 18:29, 25 April 2014 (UTC)
Obviously this has recently changed (i.e. within the last year). Now most, if not all, ascended equipment is salvageable. SarielV 20 x 20px 21:56, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Badges of Honor[edit]

I'm not sure if it's something new with HoT or a bug, but I was able to Salvage some armor from WvW I bought with Badges of Honor and got Badges of Honor back, though I wasn't paying attention to how much I got back. I'll test more later unless somebody else has more info than I do. Doodleplex (talk) 18:07, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

Ascended Rings[edit]

Not sure where else to put this, but I've been doing fractals and I've noticed a pattern to ascended rings:

  • Rings give a base of one stack of 2-10 matrices (possibly 1-10?)
  • If the ring is Attuned, then it gives +1 matrix (in a second stack).
  • If the ring is Infused, then it gives a separate stack of 2-10 matrices (possibly 1-10?).

--Imry (talk) 19:57, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

Edit: Yeah, 1-10. --Imry (talk) 08:07, 15 February 2016 (UTC)

Organized salvage research?[edit]

I've been looking about, but have not so far found any organized salvage tracking aside from Ascended stuff. Am I just missing it? I would love to contribute, and am especially interested in attempting to establish both the average and the range of salvage results. Power of the Mists does not seem to impact salvaging. Does MF? Adeira Tasharo (talk) 14:53, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Magic Find only affects direct drops, Bandit Chests in Silverwastes, and loot boxes from reward tracks. Only the grade of Salvage Kit affects salvaging results. SarielV 20 x 20px 21:57, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

What materials do you get when salvaging back items?[edit]

Can stat-selectable exotic armor/weapons be salvaged for insignias/inscriptions?[edit]

If I have a piece of stat-selectable exotic equipment, and I first choose a non-craftable stat on it (such as Magi, Rabid, Shaman, Soldier, Cavalier, etc), and I then salvage the equipment, is there a chance to get the corresponding insignia/inscription?
What if you skip choosing stats and just salvage the item? I'm assuming there will be zero chance of getting any exotic insignia/inscription this way. --138.75.82.239 19:32, 20 July 2018 (UTC)

Map Currency Ascended Trinkets & Ascended Recycling[edit]

Can anyone verify that salvaging trinkets purchased with Living Story map currencies (Blood Ruby, Jade Shard, etc) can yield items for the Ascended Recycling collection? I have gotten some items from "original" trinkets (mostly collected in fractals), but not from any of the "new" trinkets. Separ (talk) 15:31, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

efficent salvaging[edit]

so far, i used "master salvage kits" for everything. now i realize i probably wasted a lot of currency. i dont really have any knowledge on the topic, i have just seen this post: https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/60579/silver-fed-salvage-o-matic-now-obsolete this is about what i understand from that forum post:

(cost?) efficent salvaging:

Item Rarity Junk: "Copper-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Basic Salvage Kit" Item Rarity Basic: "Copper-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Basic Salvage Kit" Item Rarity Fine: "Copper-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Basic Salvage Kit"

Masterwork "Copper-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Basic Salvage Kit" OR Masterwork if you spend time to sort items, use "Basic Salvage Kit" on items without runes or sigils. use "Master's Salvage Kit" on items with runes or sigils. OR Masterwork "Silver-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Master's Salvage Kit"

Item Rarity Rare below lvl 68: "Copper-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Basic Salvage Kit" Item Rarity Rare lvl 68 and higher: "Silver-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Master's Salvage Kit"

Item Rarity Exotic: "Silver-Fed Salvag-o-Matic" same as "Master's Salvage Kit" (or sell) Item Rarity Ascended: "Ascended Salvage Tool"

Rune and Sigil salvaging[edit]

Is there a page for drop information when salvaging runes or sigils? Daddicus (talk) 20:54, 19 December 2018 (UTC)

Yes! Rune/salvage research and Sigil/salvage research. --Imry 21:18, 19 December 2018 (UTC)
Thank you! Daddicus (talk) 01:58, 20 December 2018 (UTC)

Salvage "type?"[edit]

Salvageable items now have a bit of info in the tooltip when you mouseover them. I don't know what exactly it's supposed to mean or what all of the options are, but I've seen e.g. "Salvage: Standard," and "Salvage: Ascended, Research." Would be helpful to know when this was added, what the options are, and what they mean. --24.136.13.167 21:01, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

If i thinking correctly, Standard mean for can use normal Salvage Kit to Salvage, Ascended mean only can use Ascended Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool to Salvage, Research mean can use Research Kit Salvage for Research Note. -- Wong8888 (talk) 21:23, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Yep that's exactly what it means. - Wolf Sabian (talk) 22:40, 19 October 2022 (UTC)

Ascended weapons dropping crafted components[edit]

got a Spiritwood Pistol Frame out of salvaging a Living Water Warhorn, despite this weapon being non craftable. editing the page and leaving a comment for posterity. 90.110.241.184 22:40, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

A pistol frame from a warhorn? That makes no sense. - Wolf Sabian (talk) 23:14, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

Please add Salvage category to every relevant item's infobox (such as Standard, Ascended, Research, etc)[edit]

It's a relatively new property added by ArenaNet. --202.190.11.224 08:55, 4 December 2022 (UTC)

Good suggestion, I think this needs to be added into Template:Default item parameter first. When that's done, we can then figure out how we'll add such a large task to the infoboxes. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 11:37, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
Parameter is now available for use. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 12:14, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
The Property:Has salvage type already exists since October 2022, it could be quite handy to actually set it. --Tolkyria (talk) 12:23, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
I forgot about that. Please feel free to add it if you wish (also based on that, maybe the "None" option). -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 12:47, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
So I thought about this topic a bit and think that your approach "here is the parameter, please use it" won't work. We currently document 65,000 items, including 27,000 subobjects, so 38,000 potential item pages that might use this new parameter "salvage". We have 24,000 item infoboxes, 4,800 armor infoboxes, 6,300 weapon infoboxes, 1,300 trinket infoboxes. I doubt that anyone is able to add this parameter by hand, we need some kind of automation.
Thus, I would suggest to go one step back and
  1. either bot edit this parameter based on certain item types
  2. or determine this parameter automatically in the infoboxes based on other infobox parameters.
The first approach could be done with somehow using the API and check for the "NoSalvage" flag but that's still kinda tricky I guess.
I prefer the second approach where we could for example use the rarity ascended for equipment item (e.g. weapon, armor) to automatically set it to "Ascended" and "Standard" otherwise (if not legendary); we could query if the item can be crafted and set it to "Crafted", crafted food to "Compost", etc... This would limit the requirement to use a parameter for special cases, for example when the item cannot be salvaged (which to be honest requires also some work to find out).
But in my opinion the current approach won't yield a satisfying result, this needs to be done automatically in whatever way. --Tolkyria (talk) 15:29, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
Indeed, my intention for Property:Has salvage type was to have it automatically set by the infoboxes in some way, and only the outliers would need to be manually set. --BuffsEverywhere (talk) 16:54, 4 December 2022 (UTC)
As a note for whenever we modify this, salvage "no" or "none" should probably be an option too - was looking at precursors. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:44, 14 January 2023 (UTC)
Agreed with Alex. ~Sime 21:14, 14 January 2023 (UTC)

2023 update[edit]

I've got a draft spreadsheet I'm working on with all the salvage types for all item ids. I've shared this on discord: 10mb excel file. I think I've addressed most of the edge cases where stuff wasn't researchable, but if anyone knows of any lists I can cross-reference it against, that'd be super.

In the process I've identified there's quite a few wiki pages where the titles don't match the API at all (not just prefix/suffix, the names have straight up changed) - see my sandbox2. There's probably too many for me to sort on my own, I'm thinking we could fix these after adding the salvage types (so that my data doesn't become stale before its implemented).

I've also reviewed the wiki for duplicate item ids being set, and eliminated most of them. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 11:43, 15 July 2023 (UTC)

For background information, there are 64938 items in the v2/items API endpoint; many don't have salvage options (31737) leaving 33201 ids to review, some of which are documented on the same page as non-salvageable variants.
I'm proposing edits to 11076 pages, I'll raise a bot request but here's what I'm doing:
  • batch 1: 10381 - Add to infobox
  • Batch 2: 74 - Add to infobox, but add a note that container version cannot be research salvaged (heart of thorn story rewards vs craftable Auric etc weapons)
  • Batch 3: 38 - Add note that only exotic can be standard salvaged, and that only the ascended can be ascended salvaged (mistforged hero's weapons)
  • Batch 4: 76 - Add note that only crafted versions can be research salvaged (mainly ogre/bandit weapons)
  • Batch 5: 90 - Add to infobox but has variants which cannot be salvaged (wvw and pvp exotic armor from reward tracks vs purchased ascended)
  • Batch 6: 160 - Add salvage fact for weapon into container infobox (leveling reward weapons).
  • Batch 7: 180 - Add note that karma vendor version cannot be salvaged (cultural vendor karma items which can drop as loot, and orrian karma items which can also be from fractals)
  • Batch 8: 17 - Add note that Settler version cannot be salvaged (Southsun economist exotics)
  • Batch 9: 60 - not sure what to do with these, pattern is less obvious, might turn out to be more southsun junk.
This doesn't seem like many pages compared to the original suggestion of how many pages would be affected, however 11076 edits maps out to 34831 item ids (many of our items are documented in sub templates such as item/craft/loot variant table row). I'm only adding the salvage information to the infobox at the top of the page because the salvage data is gonna bloat the individual templates. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Chieftain Alex (talkcontribs) at 18:14, 15 July 2023‎ (UTC).
All done btw. Might be worth a follow-up check to see if there's any pages with text notes saying "cannot be salvaged" which also have one or more salvage properties set. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:00, 16 July 2023 (UTC)

Salvaging info reverts[edit]

I just had three articles reverted after posting salvage results for back items. The rationale is the information is redundant.

Ok. Where is it on the wiki? SarielV 20 x 20px 02:38, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

On the pieces of equipment themselves, in the infobox: "Salvage: Standard". On the salvage results, in the form of a generic description in their respective "Aquisition#Salvaged from" sections. Myriada (talk) 10:28, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
