Guild Trek redirect[edit]

I saw you edited Guild Trek page lately, being in this topic, you can also fix the name of this redirect page.
Guild Trek's target is named Droknah Gate (without 's).
Rename: Droknah's Gate to Droknah Gate
I already corrected the redirect link, but to rename a page probably an account is needed. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.238.93.168 (talk) at 00:22, 8 February 2021‎ (UTC).

Yup if we were renaming pages you'd need an account.
However I think having both exist as redirects would be fair so I've created a second one. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 00:23, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

Interior Area Maps[edit]

Hi, after seeing your recent edits updating area maps to show the interior whenever that's relevant, I thought that was a good idea, and I figured I might be interested in contributing in helping with that. I'm just not sure how exactly you can get the map to appear that clearly, within the white boundaries, and without the player marker. If I knew how to do it reliably as you do, I'd be down for it, as long as I'm not stepping on your toes at least. Cheers! TheScreenshotGuy (talk) 16:33, 29 April 2021 (UTC)

Hey. I'd be really glad of some help. At the moment I'm working on pages we've marked up on Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Projects/Cartography/caves.
In terms of "how", for core tyria areas I'm doing the following:
  1. Take a screenshot of the entire zone away from the cave. When you're in a cave, the surrounding area will lose saturation on the world map.
  2. Walk into the cave, (optional, could use stealth: kill anything in the immediate vicinity) and log out to clear the white trail dots off the mini-map.
  3. Log back in, hide the user interface, open the world map with "M" and screenshot it.
  4. As you progress further into core tyria caves it will unfog within compass range; you basically need to repeat steps 2 + 3 as you progress into the cave.
  5. Eventually you'll have your screenshot folder with the full saturation outside map from step 1 + a bunch of cave interior screenshots from step 3.
  6. I'm layering them up in GIMP (photoshop would also work) - using differential layer blend to see when the layers are aligned correctly (when you take screenshots of the world map they never align up precisely but get it as close as you can). I'm using layer masks to combine the different unfogged areas together. Hard to explain but not too bad with a bit of practice.
  7. Finally I'm also taking the opportunity to replace the 2016 era sectors which predate the API boundaries - this step is optional and I would encourage other users to just upload area maps without the boundaries. The sector process takes about as long as the above steps and is explained in detail on Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Projects/Maps#Instructions.
You may read the above and decide you can't be bothered... :D I'd still be fine with people making further suggestions on the /caves project page though. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:50, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
A teeny bit more complex than I was anticipating but I can at least give it a shot. Only thing I'm still not sure how to work around is how to disable the player marker thingy. Disabling user interface doesn't seem to be getting rid of it.
Since I'm not an expert with GIMP, I quick checked to see how it would turn out in paint and I don't think it looks too bad, at least for smaller caves, I have yet to check that method with bigger ones, though you'd be a better judge than me. Here's my trial attempt with Grenbrack Delves and Dreamdark Enclave [1] [2].TheScreenshotGuy (talk) 21:20, 29 April 2021 (UTC)
Hmm, on second thought, while I would love to help with this, after spending a bit of time trying it out, I wasn't expecting it to be this complex/time-consuming. I don't have all that much time to dedicate to wikiing so it might best best if I sit it out instead, unfortunately :/ TheScreenshotGuy (talk) 04:05, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
No bother, you actually thought about it, which already means you're a better person than all the other non-editors. :) -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 07:03, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
Good luck with the rest of it. Given how many areas of this game are almost purely underground, it feels like this should have been done ages ago. But better late than never. Hopefully some people with more time to spare can give you a hand with this considering how daunting of a task this is looking to be, but it's useful info nonetheless :) TheScreenshotGuy (talk) 12:31, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
I was thinking at least of helping filling out the cartography page. I was thinking however, is this meant to only cover caves in the literal sense, or interiors as a whole, such as the inside of larger buildings (Main reference right now are the norn lodges)? That could be good to include those as well no? TheScreenshotGuy (talk) 22:11, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
I'm amenable to listing anything there that you think is interesting, but I'll be focusing on the bigger caves which take up mmost of an area, rather than houses etc. e.g. right now I'm looking at Zraith's Beacon -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 23:42, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
Alrighty. I've started with Ascalon, swept Black Citadel and am now checking Plains of Ashford. I'm listing interior and caves, and once added, I'll leave the list to your discretion. TheScreenshotGuy (talk) 23:47, 30 April 2021 (UTC)

Caffeinated Skritt Burglar maps[edit]

Hi, in this edit you added a bunch of maps, but none of the files seem to exist - did you forget to upload them? --Z-Tau (talk) 21:57, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

No I have never obtained those files, they are placeholders to prompt other people to upload them. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:13, 27 February 2022 (UTC)
Ah ok, thanks for the explanation. Z-Tau (talk) 11:57, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

some of the API data for events is incorrect[edit]

At the very least “Help Owl's followers” (id 31) has improper bounds. Since User:AWB_Alex is using that as a source of truth, a one off exception would be nice. Though the possibility of more events having incorrect bounds in the API may call for a systematic way to detect such bounds. --Rustre.5980 (talk) 18:28, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

I shifted two manual renown heart bounds by [32768, 16384] (hope that's correct, guessed it based on the old and new bounds from some random hearts):
and I found five more that display the bound as a straight line:
as well as three hearts without bounds:
--Tolkyria (talk) 19:11, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
Blanked the bounds on the straight line ones, they're obviously wrong, no point in keeping them. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:22, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Question about the wiki[edit]

Hello. I was thinking the other day, and I wanted to ask if anyone ever makes a backup of this wiki. So many people add to and edit this wiki and that is worth preserving on an offline backup. Just a thought. In case the servers get compromised. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Indenhurst (talkcontribs) at 16:16, 3 April 2022‎ (UTC).

The wiki runs on ArenaNet's servers, if they get compromised the game has more issues than just the wiki. They might also have backups too. DJemba (talk) 16:22, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
Hi. The admins on the wiki don't get involved in this - we're here to moderate users when necessary, the content is moderated by the community, and ArenaNet run the server for us. I expect ArenaNet do have back ups of the wiki; they're hosted on Amazon servers so its fairly straighforward to configure a back up. Additionally there are development copies of the entire wiki which are used for testing software changes. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:23, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
You can sleep soundly knowing, that the wiki is backed-up regularly (more often than you would probably assume). —Kvothe (talk) 11:03, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Question regarding the use of screenshots[edit]

Hey, you provided several screenshots to the wiki. I was wondering if it is allowed to use them in other language-versions of the official wiki aswell? For example: Could I download your screenshots from here and re-upload them to the official German Wiki? Does this infringe copyrights and do I need permission from you for it? Noxpower (talk) 10:20, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Heya. Good news, the other official wikis (ES, FR, and DE) use the same content license as we do. Content from ArenaNet is still considered to belong to ArenaNet, and since we are the official wiki provided by ArenaNet, you can freely use acceptable ArenaNet content on the other official wikis too (technically without individual uploader's permission).
Thank you for asking however, and anything I've uploaded you're more than welcome to upload without crediting me.
Original content created by users is separately subject to GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). Refer to Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Copyrights for further information.
As an example by the way, we've reuploaded tonnes of weapon gallery images from the german wiki to here. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 20:57, 22 June 2022 (UTC)

Recipe Books not showing trading post prices[edit]

Not sure if it's an api thing or not but the recipe books aren't listing trading post recipes. If you click on individual recipes you can see prices but that is very slow. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Morpheus305 (talk).

Which books? I checked some and they seem to work for me. ~Sime 21:51, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Trading post prices are displayed using javascript client side; sometimes a browser's JS gets a bit confused on the wiki and needs a CTRL+F5. This is user specific, so only you'll see the problem. There are a couple of related bugs reported on GW2W:BUG#Page requires a refresh to properly load javascript. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:54, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Except in the instance of (for example) Pahua's Weapon Recipe Book, there's a template i have missed/forgotten to update following the weekend changes to how we document containers. I'll see if I can fix it now. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 22:41, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

Template:Objectives table row changes[edit]

Hello! I noticed on A Strange Diet page that the Objective column is messed up, and I tracked back that the Template:Objectives table row was changed recently (the problem maybe is the "| id=" part, I'm not sure). It seems now the template works with plain text only, if there any link in the text, it won't work properly. Also Master of Decor, World 2 is rare example where it won't work, when there are only punctuation marks present. Gorla (talk) 11:08, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

I wasn't expecting people to be using templates in the first parameter... I was expecting plaintext for some reason. Wiki links also break it. I can revert my changes. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 11:11, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the quick fix! It was just a random chance on my part checking a page with wiki links in that column :) Gorla (talk) 11:26, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
Yeah from the checks I did there were about 4 pages of the 100+ using the template which were affected. On the minus side it means some of the #section redirects I created yesterday for achievements won't work, but it'll still turn up on the right page (even if it doesn't go to the right section). -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 13:20, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Follow-up to Reddit[edit]

First off, sorry if this isn't the right way to get in contact. Still trying to learn the navigation of the Wiki.

So with my reddit post (https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/x1adiv/i_want_to_undertake_a_wiki_project_and_id_love/) I wanted opinions from players not involved in the wiki editing world. Sometimes when people are too close to a thing their perspective can get skewed. That's something I'll keep in mind for the future, however.

Also when it comes to no bold and no icons on the intro section, I just want to get your reasonings for why. My background is in visual communication and I'm applying those principles. There needs to be a hierarchy of information for the viewer so they can get all of the relevant info within the first 5 seconds on landing on a page. Icons are used in the actual game, so they offer a familiar UI for the viewer. And bold/italics aren't random. They're intentionally used to give weight to the most relevant bits of information.

I really don't want to come off as confrontational, that's not at all my intention. Just trying to open a dialogue and get info since I'm new to the wiki editing world.

Thanks The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sorenkulle (talk) at 03:31, 31 August 2022‎ (UTC).

Hello. That's alright, you didn't really come across as confrontational, just a new user with good intentions ... who maybe was proposing something big, but using the wrong platform for the proposal. For these kind of proposals you really need both on-wiki and off-wiki agreement; it would probably have been best to discuss it on the wiki first. It might be a good idea to consider changes to the general formatting policy and help pages (e.g. Guild Wars 2 Wiki:General formatting and Help:Editing) if we did agree.
A regular introduction sentence would have a bold self-link at the start with its own page title, but that's really it in terms of special formatting. There's a few good reasons for this, one of which is the way the automated page preview script (which we cannot modify as it is part of the core mediawiki software engine) generates the page previews - it stops if it gets to pretty much any formatting (i.e. does not include any further text), especially "icons" - which on this wiki very often use a mixture of span/div, CSS classes etc. Also we should be minimising the number of links in a sentence to the bare minimum necessary; it breaks up the flow and impact of the link if you try and link every word.
If a sentence has been contructed well, it will not need any additional formatting to convey the message.
By the way conversations on the wiki are usually easier if they take place on just one talk page (I don't mind if it occurs here or on your talk page) - everyone can see it anyway, and we have Special:RecentChanges to see any new content added to the wiki in the last 24 hours. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 05:54, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

question[edit]

Hello, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask I just can't find if there is specific place we can report broken pages, I was looking at Springer backpacking and most of the images on the page are missing, I tried to add one of them but it didn't seemed to work. --User:Kokkuri 11:29, 25 September 2022‎ (UTC)

SMW queries looking at other pages and query feedback loops[edit]

Editing API v2[edit]

I'm sorry to bother you personally, but you're the last editor on the page I wanted to edit ... and I can't find the edit button ! https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/API:2/account/achievements . I would like to add optional parameters "id" and "ids". I tested them and they both worked.

Well, while I'm bothering a wiki guru, I have another question : would you know why I encounter "403 fobidden" errors (impossible to use the wiki) whenever I'm connected to my personal VPN ? It's ultra-annoying, especially since I can't disconnect it while playing (otherwise the game itself tends to lose connection). It's not like I'm using a dubious vpn ip that could legitimately be blacklisted : I'm using my own openvpn on my own server with a fixed ip, and I'm the only one using that ip and vpn. Eowin (talk) 18:25, 3 March 2023 (UTC)

If you want, you can request API namespace edit permissions to update things you think are wrong.
As far as I'm aware, API:2#Accessing resources already covers the "id" and "ids" paramter (along with the page and language parameters). I think this is usually not shown on most sub endpoint articles because the ids parameter is common to all endpoints.
Regarding 403 errors, that sounds a bit like Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Reporting wiki bugs/archive 12#Forbidden 403. See if any of the fixes mentioned there work for you - perhaps you are not setting a user agent string if you're not using a plain browser. If you still can't get it working, raise a bug report on Guild Wars 2 Wiki:Reporting wiki bugs. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 19:55, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
OK thanks a lot for answer. Regarding the API, I find it misleading to hide parameters outside of the page for each endpoint. The quest to avoid repetition of information isn't fit for such technical documentation imho.
Regarding the VPN, it's hard to find solutions in this wall of text, but I see most people are using bots and scripts, which I am not. I'm using a normal browser (Firefox) and my user agent is also normal as shown by http://useragent.fr/. I'm just behind a vpn. Interestingly, another user-agent site (https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/what-is-my-user-agent/) literally tells me "Your IP address range has been blocked", so it is now the 2nd site that blocks me while using my vpn (until now, this wiki was literally the only site doing that, and I browse a lot). Is it possible that, like them, this wiki has a bad firewall rules that block entire ip ranges ? Seems quite a weird way to do security, when we're talking about ip range from a widely known public host used by many people and organizations : OVH. If that's the case, I guess you'd have to manually fix that rule. The IP in question isn't secret, as it's the same one I used to host gw2organizer.com (rip due to lack of publicity) and gw2events.me (rip due to megaservers) : 37.187.1.194. Eowin (talk) 22:21, 3 March 2023 (UTC)
I don't use any of your tools, but do they ever ping the wiki with traffic? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 00:13, 4 March 2023 (UTC)
I'm not using any tool except the vpn itself. Nothing is doing any ping. The links are just random sites that I found on google, to check my user-agent as seen by the sites I visit. It does look like the IP itself has been blocked as a site effect of a bad firewall rule that tried to block a bad ip in the same range (37.187.1.x, or 37.187.x.x or even all of 37.x.x.x). Darkmode on the other wiki[edit]

I have "darkmode" on this wiki somehow because I think you posted how to do it before but how do I do it on the other wiki? tyJustice (talk) 07:51, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
Assuming you mean GWW (GW1W), I went to a lot of effort rewriting the wiki themes to be compatible on the GW2 wiki, and never got around to putting all of the inline styles of the GW1W into CSS.
If you want a "darkmode" on GW1W, I can't really help anymore (I quit as an admin many years ago following the whole horrible debacle). You could try (a) setting you theme to vector in preferences, then (b) adding something like User:Darqam/vector.css to gw1:Special:MyPage/vector.css, (3) then you'll need to modify it substantially to work properly. Or you could try a browser extension? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 17:05, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
