The Guild Wars Wiki has an article on Elona.
Elona, Land of the Golden Sun, is a continent just south of Tyria. It once consisted of the loosely-allied nations of Kourna, Vabbi and Istan, all of which were protected by the Order of the Sunspears and the secretive Order of Whispers. The Primeval Kings once made their home in Istan and it was in the Desolation that Abaddon was cast down and attempted to return.

Following the events of Nightfall the undead warlord Palawa Joko was freed from his imprisonment and, after much preparation, began a brutal conquest of the nation. The Vabbians were forced into submission when he dammed the river, causing a drought and subsequent famine. Kourna and Istan soon submitted themselves as vassal states of Palawa's empire. The Sunspears were all but exterminated and the ancient line of Ossa was forced into service of their mortal enemy as a living army.

Palawa Joko still rules over Elona to this day. The presence of Zhaitan in Orr and Kralkatorrik in the Crystal Desert have cut off almost all communication between Tyria and Elona, the exception being the Order of Whispers, who are able to do so unnoticed.

Elonian heritage is one of the background options available to humans during character creation.

[edit] Kourna

Kourna used to be one of the three allied Elonian provinces. It encompasses most of the southern coast of Elonian mainland.

Once ruled by the descendants of the great Turrai Ossa, Kourna was a largely military state. Its armies suffered greatly during Nightfall. When Palawa Joko dammed the Elon River, the famine that crippled Vabbi also struck northern Kourna, leading to rebellions and general weakening of the province. Soon after it surrendered and was absorbed into Palawa's empire.

The remnants of the Ossa line now hide in the hills and wilds of Kourna, hunted by those who once followed their ancestors.

[edit] Vabbi

Vabbi is another province from the former alliance. It is situated north of Kourna and is the only Elonian province that has no access to the sea. Vabbi was once a beacon of prosperity in the Elonian wastelands. It controlled a majority of the Elon's water and natural deposits of precious stones greatly enriched its merchant princes.

However, the nation is now only a shadow of its former glory and prosperity. When the river Elon was dammed by Palawa Joko's army of undead, it effectively cut off the supply of water to the northern provinces, causing drought and famine. Without water and food, the treasures of the merchant princes became meaningless and the common people threatened to revolt. It took little effort for Palawa Joko to claim the weakened province. A broken Vabbi had little choice but to surrender to Palawa Joko's superior forces, and so it was absorbed into the new kingdom of the undead king.

[edit] Istan

Istan is the last of the former three great nations of Elona. It is an island situated to the southwest of the Kournan coast.

Istan was once home to the Primeval Kings before they were wiped out by the Scarab Plague. It was also on Istan that Kormir discovered the Apocrypha and unwittingly brought about Nightfall. Once home to the Sunspears, little is known of the current conditions of this province. With the surrender of Kourna, Istan soon joined its fellow provinces under the rule of Palawa Joko.

[edit] Elon

The Elon River is a major river that flows south from Vabbi through Kourna. The river acted as the main source of water for agriculture in Vabbi and northern Kourna. However, in 1135 Palawa Joko dammed the headwaters of the river, diverting the water into the Crystal Desert. While the Desert was transformed into a lush grassland, Vabbi and Kourna were plunged into famine and soon fell to the undead warlord. Whether the river has been undammed is unknown.
