User talk:Sirrush/Tournament coverage

I don't know where to actually put this, so I guess this is as good a place as any. We know Arenanet wants Guild Wars 2 to become a serious esport. When I think 'serious esport' I think of it finding real ground in the esports scene without requiring developer backing for it to stay alive. With that being said, do we want to cover tournament (results) and as an extension to this, do we want to cover serious PvP teams/guilds? Also, if there is a more appropriate place for this, admins you know what to do! --SirrushUser Sirrush sig.jpg 00:50, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

I feel tournaments are another form of in-game events that have in-game results and should therefore be documented. To what extent this documentation should be should be carefully discussed, of course.
I'd say that (if the PvP scene is properly observable and kept track of (preferably via ArenaNet's official GW2 site)) we document tournament line-up of a top 32, when plausible. Preferably with observable set-ups such as basic builds included and possibly traits slotted (I know observations can be very detailed, as well as additional details being included from the actual teams). Not just who won, but with what was won.
Then again, I'd leave this discussion to the more PvP-involved fans. (Whilst I certainly enjoy PvP, I'm not a fanatic e-sports fan and thus am not properly informed to decide what an efficient course of action would be for documentation. Sorry for that one!) - Infinite - talk 15:25, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
While I am sure someone will bring up that we are not wikipedia but documentation of major sporting events is a common practice in wikipedia. I think if there are a limited number of regular teams/guilds like a top 32 with a short synopsis on how each match went, it should be totally do-able. I think coverage on finals and semi-finals should offer additional details of the match, observations, and statistics if available. I think a lot of sports fans whether it be physical sports or esports, statistics is something that ardent fans are always wanting. Detailed stats of top guilds/teams/players like the stats you find in battlefeild 3. For starcraft 2 this wiki has full stats and summary of the LG super cinema 2011 tournament [1]. Maybe some people can get some ideas on layout and organization of the info from that wiki. I think when we have more details of how PvP will work, we can figure out which stats would be feasible, and what kind of details would be appropriate. It's possible that more formal monthly and yearly matches might take a while to take place after launch to address balance issues. --Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg17:39, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
I like the idea of have the tournaments documented. Could have a main tournament page that lists all the tournaments with who won and came in second, as like a quick and dirty basics for the tourney. Then it could link to the tournaments own page where it has like the top 32 and in-depth info like Infinite and Lania said. I'm guessing you two were thinking of like a bracket table to show the top 32 and results for each game. I also like have the skills, traits, in-depth for the final match and maybe the runner up match, but any more than that sounds like it would be a lot of information for that tourney.
For those detailed stats Lania, were you thinking like a table on the page, or a link a page for that specific guild/player/team that has a lot of detailed stats. If it is the later, then I don't think we should make pages for winning guilds/teams/players (unless it is on User pages) as that sounds like a slippery slope to start doing on a community wiki. But if you were thinking on the page then I agree that having some kind of stat breakdown would be cool.
What I thought could be like a tourney page. Hopefully a better looking bracket, but that kind of information and order across the page. Thoughts? User Mattsta Sig1.jpgUser Mattsta Sig2.jpg 00:17, 24 March 2012 (UTC)
I think that's a great start. I think we should keep commentaries to a minimum, and just have a summary of the match with some details on turning points during the match, and important statistics. Oh and here is the template for wiki's brackets they use for tournaments for coding inspiration :)[2] --Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg21:51, 27 March 2012 (UTC)
If WvWvW is going to have a major impact in how the game is played... Then i expect there will need to be some serious coverage on that issue as well. i am however wondering how Arena-Net is going to "Ballance" servers "Worlds" and prevent players from all migrating to the Stronger servers ... ?? it is something that a lot of players are discussing and wondering as well the example comments like "I'm just a PvE player and i want to play in a strong world for the bonuses, so i'll just pay for the transfer when a pattern arises" comments like this should be addressed somehow, but i have no answers other than to lock ip's to specific servers except in cases where a player establishes a new pattern of play on a different ip and then unlock an option to move if the ip is in a different region of the world.(ie. moving, spending 8 months in europe, or playing away from home/school, or military assignments.) Brings back the old Guild Wars Guild and Alliance jumps for cities or the entire Luxon/Kurzick fiasco "Where is the Loyalty when gameplay is on the line?? Rudhraighe 08:09, 29 March 2012 (UTC)
