Krach Kazan crossed the field in a few quick strides to where the empress was bound to a tree, stepping easily among the bodies of the bandits he had slain. In a single slash, he released her bonds. She threw herself on him, crying into his barrel chest, which was wrapped in the colors of the great houses.
"You have the gratitude of the empire," she sobbed. "Anything, anything you want—you'll have it!"
"There's only one thing I want," he said, pulling away so they could look eye to eye. "And it isn't jade or jewels or fancy titles. It's for the sons and daughters of Echovald to wake up tomorrow and breathe free. Without freedom, nothing else matters, because a free man owns the most valuable thing in the world—himself."
