It's worth checking what constitutes a companion. I've tested, and this does appear to include Elementals from elementalist Glyphs. Might be worth checking the other class' summons, as shown here The preceding unsigned comment was added by Desolution (talkcontribs) at 19:37, 7 September 2012 (UTC).

From what I recall, summons, minions, elementals, and pets all count, though I don't know why I recall those in particular. I may or may not do some testing on the subject in the future. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 07:05, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
So I tested this with the mesmer, the rune does not count clones or phantasms as a "companion" for the sake of the +5% damage. Habar414 23:44, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
Did you compare the damage using a Steady weapon? Because I noticed a damage boost when having Rune of the Ranger equipped as a Mesmer. With Rune of the Eagle equipped I was doing 93 damage, 115 critical. With Rune of the Ranger equipped I was doing 96 damage, 120 critical. The weird part that I found; it didn't care if there was a clone or not. It was like a passive +5% damage; probably a bug. This does not include Thief summons such as Ambush or Thieves Guild. Tested using Steady Weapon on Heavy Target Golem. The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs) at 04:08, 24 June 2013 (UTC).
The bonus seems to stack per minion, as well. I tested with first just Blood Fiend out and got the standard damage boost, then summoned Flesh Golem and my damage went up again. It got too hard to see which damage numbers were mine when adding more minions, though, so I didn't check those. Bugged 2012-10-14?[edit]

Each Superior Rune of the Ranger seems to count TWICE towards the set bonus. 3 runes already gave me the benefits for 6 runes of the Ranger. Can anyone confirm? -- 12:53, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Me as well, 1 Superior Rune of the Ranger already stacked all 6 for me! Does this have to do with the fact that I am a ranger and this is a bonus for it? (i.e. 1 Superior Rune of the Mesmer on a Mesmer will automatically count all 6?) The preceding unsigned comment was added by (talkcontribs) at 00:58, 30 October 2012 (UTC).

I have a ranger, and this does not appear to give me all six set bonuses for one piece - just the one it should. -- Dashface User Dashface.png 08:48, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
IMO, it is a bug. I have only one idea: do your wear Rune of the Ranger in sPvP too? ---Malgalad 09:07, 4 November 2012 (UTC)
I am not sure why, but this seems to be the case for all superior runes of the (enter your profession here).Even when a mesmer views the superior rune of the mesmer in the trade post, it imply's that 5 of 6 effects are active... Thief and ranger show 6 of 6. Actually tested with both the ranger and the thief. It says 7 of 6 effects are active when applied to a single piece of armor but my precision actually went down by 7 points. Being as the first value of the rune is 25 precision and the other armor piece had a 32, that says to me that it's a, profession specific, bug or anomaly69.165.222.73 08:13, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
This is not a bug. Standard PvP gear comes with Superior Runes of the (your profession here), and counts towards the amount of rune bonuses you have active. Whether they are calculated, though, is highly doubtful (though some effects might be bugged in that fashion). It's just that you'll see 12/6 on a PvP-unstirred character with 6 of the profession runes in PvE and WvW. - Infinite - talk 12:53, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

6 bonus always active[edit]

Test-case as following Proffesion: Mesmer, un-traited ( 916 power ) using the PvP steady sword ( 121-121 ) Smacking the Target Golem: Light in hearth of the mist with Mind Slash, using 5/6 Rune of the ranger yields a consistent 30 damage. Adding a 6th piece yields 32. Summoning a phantasm/clone makes no difference for that matter. Note, I did my testing counting only the initial swing, to avoid adding vulnerability to the equation. --Rikkieh 11:51, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

I just ran the same test as you Rikkieh, but with a Greatsword, and got the same results.--Nico Miria (talk) 16:34, 7 September 2013 (UTC)

Seems to still be always active. Tested in the mists on Warrior with PvP Steady Rifle. Heavy Golem (5pc): 83 damage Bleeding Shot, 157 damage crits. Added 6th rune (replacing a +Toughness rune): 88 damage Bleeding Shot, 165 damage crits. cc (talk) 15:12, 2 August 2013 (UTC)

Miniatures will give you the 7% companion buff.

That only applies to Superior Rune of the Ranger, and is already noted there as a bug. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 12:27, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
It's kind of confusing to have the information in one place but not the other - but the decision to make separate pages for minor, major, and superior runes, as well as a main rune page, was made long ago. I assume it would break stuff to change it now. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 17:26, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Tested today on the dummies in the norn starting area; was getting 38-41 damage on the first skill of the mesmer sword attack chain consistently regardless of minipet status. They must've fixed this bug with one of the recent patches. 15:11, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Anyone tested if the bonus disappears when you go into beastmode with a ranger?

id like to know too -- 03:26, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
according to Superior Rune of the Ranger its gone when melded -- 03:29, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
