Germans have more fansites

Germans have More GW2 sites that English do... thinking Anet is placed somewhere in America you would think the oposite --Neil2250 , The Zoologist User Neil2250 sig icon5.jpg 16:21, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Nahh, German gamers are extremely, far more dedicated, thus having way more fansites up. - Infinite - talk 17:25, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Verifiability/trustworthiness

So I'm thinking this is a pretty good page to advertise your phishing website or whatever. With GWW, I think the fansite list was constructed based on the official GW website's list; however, we don't have something like that for GW2, so these are just random fansites (or otherwise) being linked. Anyone have any solutions? I think we need some kind of minimum standard introduced. -- pling User Pling sig.png 16:13, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

VERY good point, Pling. I was on one fansite, and suddenly it gave me a virus that made me have to reconstruct my computer to get rid of it. Obviously not all fansites are secure, and there should only be a list of the verified fansites that are KNOWN to be secure/trustworthy. Whether that means regular examination or weekly testing, there needs to be some better way. Amannelle 18:11, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
For one, I don't think blogs should be listed; therefore, I'm removing the Italian blog. I don't know any better way to manage the fansite list than to test them.-- Shew 21:48, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
I want to prevent us from having to have a special policy just for this page (like on GWW), but some basic rules like "only list them here" or "has to be notable" should be followed. Where whether a page is notable, imo, should be here on the talk page. --Xeeron 21:19, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
I agree, decisions on this talk page are enough. Now to come to those decisions. I see two options:
  1. Go through ArenaNet's communication sites (their main website, Facebook, Twitter, etc) and list the fansites they link to or recommend. Also, list spinoffs of currently notable Guild Wars fansites. Remove any other fansite from the list (but we can allow exceptions when necessary).
  2. Look through the links currently on the page and that are put there in future, and try to see if they are appropriate. This could obviously be risky and may be less efficient; it'll be harder to review the non-English fansites, for example. There's also the issue of what we should define as "appropriate" - I'm guessing that as long as it's not a malicious site, it should be ok.
My preference is option 1. -- pling User Pling sig.png 13:58, 5 March 2010 (UTC)
For now, I am not sure that we can use any "official" list by ANet, seeing how that might not exist. That might be the best option if the decisions becomes contentiou later on, but for now application of common sense seems good enough for me. --Xeeron 17:07, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Comments on this list

I vote for it's removal from this list. It's a brand-new forum. No posts whatsoever. This isn't the place to advertise. --Naoroji My Contributions 16:10, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Also, Guild-wars-2.net's forums are hardly noteworthy. I think that should be removed too (info only). --Naoroji My Contributions 16:19, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Criteria and classification

I haven't helped on the wiki much before, but I'd like to help out with community-related pages, starting with fansites. A fansite is a website by one or more fans.

Table columns

  • Name (Default sort, linked to website)
  • Description (Defining feature(s) and/or focus)

Proposed fansite list sections

General communities
(includes forums, news, mega sites)
Resources
(includes wikis, help sites, databases, maps, etc)
Special interest
(includes sites focusing on PvP, art, fiction, lore, farming, modding, etc)
Non-English websites
(the "Description" column is replaced by "Language", and sorted by this)
Blogs
(includes blogs and other personal fansites)

Proposed criteria

  • Created or maintained by fans
  • Dedicated to the game, or an aspect of it
  • Meets fansite expectations and criteria for any fansite status described at the page: http://www.guildwars.com/community/fansites/program/ (Or something similar. Why wasn't this suggested at GWWiki?)
  • IS NOT guild-specific

A note on notability

I believe notability based on official ArenaNet acknowledgement is nonsense. ArenaNet mentioned my blog on Twitter a few times, it's listed as a source for at least 3 articles on this wiki, and I've been linked in articles on large sites including Massively and Guru. Even my silly little blog would meet criteria. But I think other blogs are just as worthy of notice, and the community deserves a simple list of other blogs to know they're not alone, and feel "part of it all". I've read the wiki discussions from May 2007 on this topic. I think it's time to look at GW2Wiki's stance on fansites now, in the calm before the storm. I'd appreciate hearing the opinions of the bigwigs of GWWiki. I don't think we need articles specific to fansites (this main namespace list is ideal), but we do need to give more thought to criteria and sorting. (I hope there's not a rule on formatting in Talk pages :) Shaun|Nox 12:09, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

I think there will be concern from those who've been around Guild Wars wikis for a while that content which is generated by the community is difficult and time consuming to control (builds, guilds, feedback). While this isn't in the same scale - we don't want to have a list of blogs which met the criteria once-upon-a-time but stopped updating a year ago. The easiest way for us to avoid that is to use an ArenaNet provided list of fansites which they've judged to meet the criteria for us. I like this because it means that we aren't tied to actively maintaining a list in 18mths time when the shine is coming off the game.
The issue is there is no current official listing and the list we have of active GW2 fansites is probably incomplete and in need of tidying. Your suggestion for sorting the list and criteria seems fair. Many of us are happy to wait for the ArenaNet list - but if you are keen to take on this in the meantime Nox, I've got no objections. -- Aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 22:46, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Echoing a bit what Aspectacle said, the big deal is to avoid this turning into a battle ground where editor A wants some site (e.g. his own blog) included, while editor B is strictly opposed. As long as everything stays peaceful, we don't really need the ANet list, but if some spats happen, refering to that list is the easiest way out. --Xeeron 20:51, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Social networks

Hi. We have a fairly well-established and growing Guild Wars 2 club in the largest Russian social network [1]. There is game info, all the news, media, translations and discussions.

One thing is, to view all the stuff you have to be registered and join the club, because it's been made closed to prevent spam. Would it be right to list it here? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:188.226.50.98 (talk).

I don't think there's a problem... (Xu Davella 15:49, 6 March 2011 (UTC))

Chinese Wiki

So I was looking around and seeing if there were any pages I could remove from this to clean it up, and I came across the Chinese wiki, whose entire wiki is simply copy pasta pages of our wiki, some of which are translated into Chinese. I imagine there is a problem here, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about it... Aqua (T|C) 23:12, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

They've every right to do so.
However, they'll need to - in some way - give credit to us and use the same license. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 23:58, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Oh, and thanks for bothering to link... User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 23:59, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
Cuz you known when I'm on my phone I really am capable of linking... Aqua (T|C) 01:08, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Another one

Currently, both the Chinese and Spanish wikis are using our page designs, our templates and our text (albeit translated into a different language). I sniffed around a bit, notably on the Spanish wiki, and realized that we don't receive any attribution for our work. It mas my understanding that if you copied something under GFDL, you required to attribute it to the original creators. How should we proceed? Aqua (T|C) 21:17, 2 June 2011 (UTC)

War? Lawsuit? Try to contact the sites' owners and resolve this peacefully? -User Eive Windgrace Harbinger of the Deceiver.png 21:19, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
I apologize, my English is very bad.

We will include a link in every article that points at the original article in English, we realize an insole and shortly we will revise all the articles to apply the above mentioned insole. Our intention is proportional the available information in the official wiki, but translated into Spanish, since there are many fans of Guild wars 2 in españa that do not deal the Englishman, we want to expire with all the licenses, in the title of the main page we make clear that this wiki is a "mirror" of official translated into the Spanish.

Here I leave him a demonstration of the insole that we will use to index every article:

A greeting and if he believes that we must modify something do not hesitate to say it to us. Arcadio 21:31:26 (UTC)

Hi Arcadio. That level of attribution looks fine. Please also put your link box on the profession icons as they're fan made. Thanks for explaining the situation and taking steps to fix it. I hope in the future ArenaNet will host different language wikis - especially if they're supporting the language in game and linking out to a wiki. It would stop many problems like this I think. Good luck with the Spanish wiki. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 21:45, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
If Aspectacle has no problem with you using his tangos (without attribution...) then I won't raise the issue. Then again, you probably should.
:) Aqua (T|C) 23:58, 2 June 2011 (UTC)
As one from Gw2 Chinese Wiki, over 90% of pages which are translated from here are marked its origin. And I'll try to make sure those which don't will be marked as soon as I find out. Also, there's a notice on the main page saying addressing this as well. This question has been talked before, and plz make further related talks on my talk page so that I can see. Removed sites, pondering some

Here's what I changed apart from a couple double slashes:

Cleaned up:

Removed:

On top of that, I am pondering removal of those two sites:

Additionally, I couldn't make any sense of Guild Wars 2 VKontakte. Is that some kind of russian facebook group? --zeeZUser ZeeZ Sig.png (talk) 20:51, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Removed Fire and Source aswell since their status didn't change. None of the sites I previously removed have returned either. Also found talk about VKontake on this very talk page, doh ;) --zeeZUser ZeeZ Sig.png (talk) 00:20, 17 December 2011 (UTC)
