Matthew (Matt) Pennebaker was the Design Director at ArenaNet. Previously, he was a game designer. Following the release of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, Matt took over the work on the legendary weapon collections from Linsey Murdock. He engaged with players on the official forums and on Reddit to find and fix bugs and other issues with the collections.[1]

Design Director[edit]

He provided direction and leadership to Guild Wars 2 design managers and discipline leads, helped guide the future strategies of Guild Wars 2 as it continued live operations, and facilitated cross-discipline communication and collaboration for a team of over 100 developers.

Game Design Lead[edit]

As game design lead he led, reviewed, and set standards for Guild Wars 2 rewards and economic systems.

He developed the content creation pipeline for an unannounced mobile project, including data structure, design process, content automation, and standards.

He assisted fellow designers with implementation and automation tools.

He stablished the Current Events Team, responsible for creating small-release live content for Guild Wars 2 with the goal of generating player engagement and speculation.

He worked collaboratively with art, programming, and quality assurance in developing content and systems for the live Guild Wars 2 environment and the Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns expansion.

For the launch of Guild Wars 2, he designed and implemented in many areas of the game: open world content, player progression, and player and creature skills.
