Talk page

Putting formatting on your talk page that squishes it down to about half a screen is bad, as is footer code (prevents people from using the 'create new section' button), as is floaty crap that blocks the sitenotice. Also your signature code is ridiculously long. - Tanetris 21:56, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

I never like it when I sound too offensive, especially when I didn't mean it and or aim for that, but I don't know how to say this any differently:
1/ if user talk pages should be bland and uninteresting, okay, so be it, (this does also solve the "floaty crap" problem, however, it wasn't made by me and I was simply told to put it up); the "squishing to about half a screen" is relative, and I actually noticed it just some two weeks ago when switching to widescreen display and was planning to relativize the proportions in the future,
2/ I have already tried to tackle the footer code problem (see history), but unsuccessfully, so I thought that, as it did work, it simply disrupted the layout (which is now out, anyway), the 'create new section' button is absolutely usable, and should the layout be in need of repair, the footer code could be moved back down. And many people, myself included, rather use the edit button, which posed no problems. Anyway, it does actually no longer matter as we're back to the whitespace, yay!
3/ The signature is "ridiculously long" only because of IE for its extremely limited knowledge of CSS. I could make it shorter by omitting the workaround, which would make it invisible in IE, or by putting it into an image, which would be more than 19px wide and you (not namely you, simply the adminship) might not like that either. And I don't really want to sacrifice the design (or, actually, anything) just for a few bytes of space because of IE. · loquayloquay · 18:46, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
To address your last point first: Last I heard we're cool with sig images that are more than 19px wide (as long as they're not more than 19px high and you don't start getting ridiculous with it, like hundreds of pixels wide). A few people have their names as images in their sigs, and doesn't look like they get crap for it, so I'd say there'd be no problem with doing that. As for talk pages, it's not that they have to be totally bland, but style should be (distantly) secondary to function, and having a set width and footer code interfere with functionality, for reading and editting, respectively. Off the top of my head, I'll point to User talk:Venom20 as an example of a styled talk page that doesn't interfere with functionality. The header's a bit on the long side for my personal taste, but no footer code is required, the background is light enough for normal text to be read easily, editting and reading are both exactly as functional as a plain, unformatted talk page. User talk:Ariyen, same deal, exactly as functional for both reading and editting. User talk:Neil2250 isn't exactly the same for reading (because of the sideframe piece), but close enough not to fuss about. See what I mean? (I hope so since I can't think of any more examples)
And not to worry, you don't sound offensive. - Tanetris 02:51, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Felix Omni, a sysop, has a wider-than-19px sig image, so "the adminship" can't be said to be against it. pling User Pling sig.png 15:05, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
