New categories[edit]

So, i noticed you added those new categories to a fair number of pages. And while that can be useful, it's also a bit redundant. If we wanted those categories, we'd just use the infobox to add them or code them to enable making pages with all greatswords of a certain type. So, I'd ask about it on the community portal or elsewhere. --JonTheMon 00:26, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello,
It's a work in progress. I tried to find the place to ask for bots to do it automatically, like on Wikipedia. But I couldn't find it so I did it myself. If this might be done, could you be more precise about the location where I could ask this to be added in the infobox?
While I understand that the work itself is a bit redundant, I don't understand why the categories are. Could you elaborate on that?
Thanks and regards, Frór 00:51, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
He means that the infoboxes themselves can be coded to add the categories to every page that they're on automatically, instead of requiring the editor to put the categories there on their own. That method is preferred because it leaves less code on each article page, and there's no chance that a page will be missed or a category misspelled. —Jyavoc 00:57, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks, but I understood that properly.
My questions actually are:
  • Where can I ask anyone to implement this in the infobox? (as I don't know how to edit scripted infoboxes)
  • Why are adding these categories redundant?

Because they can be added automatically, adding them to the pages manually is what ishy was saying was redundant. (Correct me if I'm wrong, ishy, but) I don't believe he was saying the categories themselves are redundant. Just that doing them by hand was. And as for the categories, if we can get a few more people (like ishy above us) to approve the addition of these new categories, someone who knows more about infobox and template scripting can add them in. It isn't the most speedy way to go about it, but it's the way that'll ultimately create less problems/arguments than just running in and doing something. —Jyavoc 01:07, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) The template is Template:Weapon infobox, so ask on that talk page. As for redundant, that's not quite the exact word, but it's close to either that or extraneous. Anyhow, the gist is that infoboxes do a wide variety of pages a lot better, without the need to manually add categories (or even add categories at all, since there are other ways to get a group of rare greatswords). Btw, I'm not ishy :P --JonTheMon 01:09, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Holy hell, I need to get off the wiki, because everything has blended together. Either that, or I need to get my personal life in order so I can get off the wiki so I can stop blending everything together. My apologies pling (:P) —Jyavoc 01:12, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
I would have to say that the categories themselves are fairly pointless. Or at least they will be once we get SMW set up properly. Lists like "Exotic greatswords" or "Masterwork maces" are the kind of things that SMW does very simply, without bloating the category space. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:12, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
