Dye preview codes[edit]

Why exactly are you adding Preview Code: [] to every dye article? We don't use preview codes on the wiki, let alone empty ones with no information. User Noxx Sig.png 11:55, 14 February 2013 (UTC)

Several dye pages have preview codes while others do not. Why the inconsistency? There's a topic discussing previewing dyes on Reddit and it seems silly that preview codes are not being edited into the wiki and people need to jump through several websites to find and use them. I'm just running through all the dyes to make it consistent throughout for others and myself to fill out. Was hoping to fill them out eventually over time. Should I stop? Seems no-one ever wants to put info into the wiki. 110.168.83.76 12:18, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
They will eventually be put on using a robot + a wiki extension. Its a waste of your time adding empty brackets without the code in. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 12:25, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Alright then, I'll stop then. 110.168.83.76 12:30, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Chat link format and Guild Wars 2 Wiki talk:Community portal#Item preview codes, help us all and make as much an effort to read topics on the wiki as you do Reddit.--Relyk ~ talk > 12:36, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
This thread the reason you started adding preview codes? crazyjackal I guess--Relyk ~ talk > 12:43, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
I don't even know how to get to Guild Wars 2 Wiki talk:Community portal#Item preview codes from the Community Portal page, so I would never have found the link you provided. I've read it. It's clear I'm out of my depth here and I should just leave the wiki editing to the programmers and script writers. Sorry I wasted everyone's time. Keep up the good work. 110.168.83.76 12:58, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) To be fair, some of the discussions here on the wiki are pretty hidden, especially for those who are new to wikis. I was searching for links on the topic for a reply to crazyjackal/110.168 before Cheiftain Alex did so and even I couldn't find the second link. No wonder the wiki community is often considered toxic by others... User Noxx Sig.png 13:09, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
It's common sense not to edit 200+ articles without asking, especially if you can't find information on it or pages that discuss the issue. You also don't discuss editing the wiki on Reddit.--Relyk ~ talk > 13:25, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Why are you so hostile? You seem to hate reddit, that's your choice. I really don't understand why you think the GW2 community (on reddit or anywhere else) should be so separate from that on the wiki. Even ArenaNet have discussed trying to promote editing the Wiki on reddit. I always thought the point of wikis and wikipedia was for volunteer contributors to add knowledge and information in increments. The wiki model would allow editors to contribute simultaneously and incrementally throughout. I was under the impression that it was for MANY people to add information in small amounts over time to eventually have an encyclopedia of knowledge. Clearly, I'm wrong and I know that now but people beyond your community (like me) don't realise this. 110.168.83.76 13:46, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Yeeeeaaaaaaahh, it seems like there are a couple things going on here. First, there's always the question about "Do you have the structures in place for content but not content and it looks blank/incomplete vs omit it altogether so it looks cleaner". It seems that you ended up on the wrong side of the line this time. One thing that is fine, though, is if you were consistent, which it looks like you were. At that point we can use a bot to tweak things. Second, it seems like you've thought of some ideas at the same time as the wiki did (the CommPort talk). As that is the case, it can feel like you're jumping the gun or something or that you're doing something that we'll have to undo later (true, but it can be rolled into bot tasks that we'll have to do anyway once we come to a final format).
So, I hope that we weren't too aggressive in telling you to stop. We don't want you to waste your time doing something that we'll just immediately replace (unbeknownst to you) and to us it does seem like a lot of undoing work (which isn't so much once you have Wikichu or BotIshmael). If you decide to stay here, feel free to participate in the CommPort talk, which not only includes discussion about dye codes, but item codes as well. --JonTheMon 13:29, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
No problem. I understand and I get it. 110.168.83.76 13:47, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
Welcome to the wiki, by the way :). You're entirely right that wikis work by editors adding stuff over time; you're needed as much as the programmers and script writers. In the case of item codes, for efficiency's sake, we're using bots - but that happens rarely. pling User Pling sig.png 18:02, 14 February 2013 (UTC)
