This article documents the formatting practices and processes with regards to image naming and categorization.

General naming conventions[edit]

Image names[edit]

Image names should be in sentence case.

Extensions[edit]

Extensions should always been lower case. "File:<Image>.jpg" is proper; "File:<Image>.JPG" is not.

ArenaNet images[edit]

These images are copyrighted by ArenaNet or NCsoft. This includes images taken from Guild Wars 2 and the original Guild Wars.

Note: the month and year referenced should refer to the time the screenshot was made available.

Post-release screenshots[edit]

Note: unlike the pre-release screenshots, post-release screenshots do not require a time stamp in the file name.

Images with official titles should be named File:<Official title> render.xxx
ex. File:Cow render.jpg
Images without official titles (or titles that lack sufficient description) should be named File:<Short description> render.xxx
ex. File:Krytan farmhouse render.jpg

Icons[edit]

All icons follow some basic formatting guidelines.
  • All icons should be tagged with {{icon}}
  • All icons should be named to match the object they represent
e.g. "File:Meteor Shower.jpg" for Meteor Shower
In addition, specific types of icons follow different guidelines on extensions and tagging.
Skill icons[edit]
Extension: .jpg
Skill icon tags should reflect the "primary source" (profession, race or environmental weapon) of the skill.
Profession skills — {{ArenaNet image|icon|<Profession> skill icons}}
Race skills — {{ArenaNet image|icon|<Race> skill icons}}
Environmental weapon skills — {{ArenaNet image|icon|Environmental weapon skill icons}}
Trait icons[edit]
Extension: .png
Trait icon tags should reflect the profession that can use the trait.
Profession-specific traits — {{ArenaNet image|icon|<Profession> trait icons}}

Guild Wars 1 images[edit]

All images belonging to the original Guild Wars are tagged only with {{ArenaNet image|gw1}}. They should not receive any other {{ArenaNet image}} tag, regardless of whether they're concept art, screenshots or any other image type.

User images[edit]

These are images uploaded exclusively for use in the userspace. They should:

  • be named with the format File:User <Username> <description>.xxx (e.g. "File:User Example background.jpg")
  • be tagged with {{user image|<Username>}} (e.g.{{user image|Example}})
  • if from Guild Wars 2, be tagged only with {{ArenaNet image}}, regardless of image type (screenshot, concept art, etc). All images from Guild Wars 1 are still tagged with {{ArenaNet image|gw1}} instead.

Using {{ArenaNet image}}[edit]

All images tagged with {{ArenaNet image}} may require further parameters be added if the image belongs to a specific category. To illustrate, the image Bone Minions animation.gif is tagged with {{ArenaNet image|animation|Necromancer skill animations}}. This illustrates that the image is an animation and placed in the category Necromancer skill animations.
