Not so sure about the explosion/knock-back, for it seems to happen randomly, i've tested it in flat open areas too.
In my experience, it CAN explode and knock-back when ever either of the skills is used.
I would estimate the chance of it blowing up around 1/10~1/5 every time a skill is used.
The duration on the consumable seems to be roughly 3 minutes, like some other environmental consumables.
I wouldn't say you are wrong, but I'd suggest to test them thoroughly as I did.
