Special:RenameUser vs Special:UserMerge

In the case of people with one account; why exactly are we still requesting people create a second account instead of renaming the original? -Chieftain Alex 18:03, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

Because new things confuse and frighten me. Also I vaguely recall something about RenameUser not working as well, though that information could well be outdated by now and/or a misunderstanding on my part. Also it removes any potential vaguery on exactly what new name the user wants. Also we already have this request page set up all nice and pretty. - Tanetris (talk) 18:50, 21 April 2017 (UTC)

The comment from here still applies in my opinion. Basically more control on the target username (what Tanetris said), and it keeps the old name around. And of course laziness because it was always like that… xD poke | talk 21:08, 21 April 2017 (UTC)
