Status[edit]

Unsuccessful, removed from sysop role. 22:59, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Candidate statement[edit]

26/M/San Francisco.

I've been around and I like to make things better. Sometimes this backfires. I will be mostly passive this time around as I do not have the time to be a full-time sysop like the last few wikis.

The nature of my contribution does not require me to have sysop rights, though occasionally I use them to help janitor so there should be no harm in me keeping them. I am firmly in the "everyone who uses them responsibly should have them" camp re: sysop rights.

Discussion[edit]

  • I will be mostly passive this time around as I do not have the time to be a full-time sysop... Sorry, I don't think we don't need anymore inactive sysops right now. Until the last two weeks or so, you've been away for four years, judging by your contributions to GW2W. Maybe come back with a new RFA once you've spent several months here actively. • Tanaric was, four years ago, barely active on the wiki, and hadn't been until we started RfR discussions. If a brief Eloc dilemma is all it takes for him to pretty much ragequit, I really don't see a good reason for him to have admin tools. He also seems to have a general distrust for the more active GW2W crowd (I might be, and hope that I am, wrong, but I got that impression) (i.e. tagging old images for deletion because they might be a violation of NDA, which would imply that we hadn't checked) and I really don't think that is something that any admin should have. I would recommend that he reintegrate with the community and try again in the future. (As an aside: I'd heard that he was one of the better admins on GWW/GWiki/PvX, so I went to check his history on GWW. It looked promising until I got closer to present day, but, unfortunately, the more recent stuff from there is not convincing either. As we're playing the "universal clean-slate game", I generally ignore stuff from other wikis, but this one didn't change my opinion too much, other than reinforcing what I already thought, so I figured I'd mention it.) • You're not the same Tanaric that I remember from the days of old. Not to say that this is for the better or the worse, but it's just...different. On GW2W you haven't done anything that particularly demonstrates how you would be a valuable sysop. On GWW, unless we want to go way way back, the thing that stands out is that brief period of time where you emerged from the darkness, raised some hell, and then retreated again after getting rejected by a community that you no longer belonged to / that no longer identified with you. On PvX I have no idea what you did, but PvX is better ignored anyway. On GuildWiki...you were a great guy and I'd say that you were fairly stellar, but that was forever and ago and no one cares about GuildWiki anymore anyway. It didn't mean jack shit on GWW and it doesn't mean jack shit on GW2W either. Therefore I have to conclude that your contributions do speak for themselves, and it's not a great picture. Your personality, from how I know you personally... I can't vouch for that anymore, as I stated initually. So really the only argument I could make for you to retain the tools is the Law of Sysop Inertia. But that alone is a very weak reason to keep someone promoted, especially if they are not going to be very active like you state. This community especally has a bias against inactive admins, and it does not believe in promoting/keeping people "because why not". I don't buy into that argument, and I think it's a load of crap based on my experiences as bureaucrat on GuildWiki, but that's the consensus here. You can look in my talkpage archives if you want a reminder of how sysop works around here. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 22:39, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
  • I'd prefer to see privileges go to someone who more apparently shares my enthusiasm for documenting this game and is familiar with and supportive of the community. -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 23:38, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
  • The last time Tanaric received sysop tools he caused a shitstorm and then ragequit for a year. I can't say I'd trust him with them again. Felix Omni Signature.png 01:00, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
That was several years ago... but then again I'm not sure if he has changed/matured enough to prevent a recurrence. Better be safe than sorry and say no.--Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg05:55, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
It's not really a question of maturity- Tanaric is fully capable of being an effective sysop- but of misplaced confidence. Tanaric demonstrated back then just what can happen when a person who is completely out of touch with the community is granted sysop tools based purely on fond memories and a bit of rhetoric. If he remains active in this community for a good while it would go a long way toward restoring trust in his judgment, but you know what they say... once bitten, twice shy. • "The nature of my contribution does not require me to have sysop rights..." In that case, I recommend that this RfA be withdrawn until that changes. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 02:26, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
