Category talk:Fishes

Plural

Wikipedia has this to say:

"the plural for one species of fish, or caught fish, is fish,[citation needed] but for the plural of fish of multiple individuals or species fishes is used."

If I'm reading it correctly, since the category will contain fish of multiple species, "fishes" is the correct plural. Other sources I've seen have said the same. --ஸ Kyoshi 05:33, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Still, must say that's the oddest thing ever. After all, we don't make a difference between referring to multiples of one kind of mammal species or multiples of many kinds of mammal species; or amphibians, or reptiles, or birds, or... you get my point. Konig/talk 06:50, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Just saying the grammar being wrong isn't a correct argument for switching it to "fish." I don't really care either way because it sounds silly. --ஸ Kyoshi 16:36, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

Arguably, this category will be referring to the creature type which, mechanically, will be a shared "species" so fish would be just as accurate as fishes depending on how one looks at it. Konig/talk 21:13, 31 July 2011 (UTC)

I know I'm a bit late here but... one more perspective.

I'm presuming we wish to be correct on this issue - largely unrelated to the game as it is - for the sake of being professional. To which I must ask; what part of "fishes" sounds professional?

It's not that I advocate going with something incorrect because it's a common misconception. It's just... well, I think it's better to go with "fish" now rather than suffer edit wars down the road. Category redirects don't work/are pointless - putting Category:Fish on a page doesn't categorise it under Category:Fishes. pling 16:24, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

I did not know this. But the categorizing a page as Fish would obviously get rectified asap (so I had hoped the category redirect itself would be an indicator of which category to use). - Infinite - talk 16:26, 11 September 2011 (UTC)
