I move to standardize the style of handedness phrases to:

  • "main hand" (not "mainhand" or "main-hand")
  • "offhand" (not "off hand" or "off-hand")
  • "two-handed" (not "two handed")
  • "one-handed" (not "one handed")
  • "offhand only" (not "offhand-only")

As put forth by http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/combat/part-two/.

This is a pretty straightforward proposition. Please present feedback and/or suggestions for discussion :). —Proton 23:14, 21 March 2011 (UTC)

Absolutely not and I will elaborate in the morning as to why we should not follow ArenaNet on this subject. - Infi on Phone 84.31.15.202 01:25, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
This has already been discussed the better part of 20 times. What you don't understand about this is that one is describing the item and the other is describing the hand that wields it. Main-hand is the adjective form of main hand. Aqua (T|C) 01:48, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Ah. Looking through the article again, I see that each instance of "main hand" and "offhand" in the article is as a noun. This makes sense now. However, should Main-hand be renamed, or is the page name intended to be an adjective? —Proton 02:08, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Based on the number of edits we've done, main-hand and off-hand are used more frequently. (Xu Davella 05:01, 22 March 2011 (UTC))
Yeah, the points brought up here make sense to me. I'll remove this page from the RFC. —Proton 05:05, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I announced it so;
You want to standardize the styles of handedness phrases, this is a good thing, but a little vocabulary check comes along:

  • The use of hyphenated and non-hyphenated versions depends on what is being referred to;
    • "The right hand is a character's main hand. If they equip a dagger in this hand, it will grant main-hand dagger skills."
    • "The left hand is a character's off hand. If they equip a dagger in this hand, it will grant off-hand dagger skills."
    • "A character has two hands. If they equip a greatsword in both hands, it will grant (two-handed) greatsword skills."
    • "A character has two hands. If they equip a random weapon in both hands, it will grant two-handed weapon skills."
    • "A character has access to many off-hand weapons that can never be equipped in the main hand (they are not main-hand weapons). These weapons are also known as off-hand only weapons."
  • As per above, standardizing is impossible, as use depends on whether referring to the actual hand or the weapon that fills a slot.

And that is why we can not standardize any of this. - Infinite - talk 08:43, 22 March 2011 (UTC)

Perhaps this is something specific we could elaborate on in Guild_Wars_2_Wiki:General_formatting? I'm sure it will come up again (and again). -- aspectacle User Aspectacle.png 08:57, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Good point, though we should possibly write some more formal examples. :) - Infinite - talk 09:02, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
It's up. Also, Edit summary should've read: (I hope this is all-encompassing and fine as is.), rather than what it says now: (I hope this is all encompassing and fine as is.) Only the former would have been correct. Got to love hyphens. :D - Infinite - talk 09:17, 22 March 2011 (UTC)
Wow that's...extremely elaborate. Speaking of hyphens, I'm gonna go and finish the weapons category...been meaning to do that for a while, :P. (Xu Davella 09:27, 22 March 2011 (UTC))
