Siege the Stronghold (Escort Glenna)[edit]

Use the Siege the Stronghold walkthrough for a more comprehensive guide.

Shortest guide[edit]

You cannot wipe the squad without actively trying

Short guide[edit]

Do whatever the commander tells you to do.
If you got assigned to a group, follow the members of that group.
Keep wargs away from Glenna, by dealing damage and using CC's that slow movement.
Towers shoot projectiles from above that hurt a lot. Do not stand in the explosions.
Mines instantly kill you if you enter the inner red circle. They become targetable if you stand between the outer white circle and the inner red circle.

Brief discussion of mechanics[edit]

Keep Glenna safe while you lead her to the end of the path. She has 15 stacks of the Surveilled buff. If no one is near Glenna, she will lose stacks until they reach 0, at which point she gets ambushed and most probably killed. Only one person usually gets assigned to take care of Glenna. She can be called to any player by using the special action button when she is in range, but it would be too chaotic if everyone uses the call.

White Mantle appear in static places along the path, on the towers, as well as continually spawn from the end of the path from which they will follow the path and run toward the group.

Along the path are towers which have to be captured in order to be able continue. If they are not captured, they will continue shooting projectiles on the path below, making it impossible to traverse. On the towers are capture points. Having more players on the point than enemies will capture the tower. This can be achieved by pushing the enemies off the point, bringing a lot of players on the point, or killing off most of the enemies so there are more players than enemies in the end. Killing all enemies on a tower will cause them to respawn. Traversing between towers requires leyline gliding or a mesmer with a lot of portals. Reaching the first tower requires you to run through a dangerous cave. Once the first tower has been captured, a leyline will open to the side of the path from which the towers can be reached without having to run through the cave.

The cave is filled with mushroom enemies and anyone will get damaged while inside of it, unless periodic buffs are taken by walking into the water wells which are spread around the cave. Receiving that buff requires a raid mastery.

Wargs spawn from the front and back of the path when a tower is captured. Wargs run directly for Glenna, and can only be soft CC'ed (chill, cripple, immobilise). The frontwarg will arrive at Glenna before it gets close enough to be killed. The backwarg spawns near the cave entrance, so usually one person is assigned to take care of it.

Mines spawn along the path. They have an inner red circle and an outer white circle. They are initially untargetable, but standing between the white and red circle will make them targetable. Touching the inner circle instantly kills. Mines respawn after a while.

Pulling Glenna to the full white circles along the path will make her unlock leylines. This is usually required to unlock a leyline from one tower to another, so the next tower can be captured.

Once the last tower has been captured, the boss spawns and Glenna can safely be left alone around the top of the stairs.

The boss disappears every 25% of his health, spawning a red and white phantasm. Players will receive and a red or white symbol above their head and are only able to damage the respectively coloured phantasm. Also every 25%, a warg will still spawn, which should be stopped or killed before it reaches Glenna.

The escort event is the only raid encounter in which players can be resurrected by others. This can be done once the last tower has been captured.

Common stratgies[edit]

  • '5-4-1 split' (ground and tower group): One player takes care of the backwarg. A chronomancer runs through the cave and portals three other squad members up to the tower. They will remain on the towers until the boss fight. They always leave one enemy alive on the tower, to avoid the rest from respawning. Meanwhile the five people on the ground move forward along the path, while keeping Glenna safe.
  • Instant capture (instacap): One player takes care of the backwarg. A chronomancer runs through the cave and portals all other squad members up to all towers. It will instantly be captured, after which the squad can use the portal back to the path. Only Glenna's caretaker stays behind with Glenna. The chronomancer stays behind on the tower, maybe along with a healer for safety.
  • Solo tower: One player takes care of the backwarg. One player takes care of the towers. All others can run along with Glenna.

Having the whole group run through the cave is generally not done. (Author's note: literally never seen before in hundreds of escorts.)

Profession role discussion[edit]

Caveman: Usually a chronomancer because of the portals and tower soloing capabilities. A portal will do for '5-4-1', but an additional mimic is required for instacapping. If necessary take blink to get through the cave. A Fiery Greatsword can be a great tool to gain extra mobility.

Backwarg: Any class with soft CC in their rotation. Scourge/Reaper, Berserker, Condition Engineer,... If necessary other slowing utility skills can be taken.

Glenna's caretaker: Usually a healer. Keep Glenna to the sides of the path, because the mines spawn in the middle.

General layout of the fight[edit]

lower bridge, kill mobs, chrono enters cave while rest continues along path, chrono will have reached tower and places portal, appropriate members take portal, continue along the path while calling Glenna to the white circles every now and then, reach boss and kill boss
