Category tree[edit]

How would you people like to categorize traits? A simple categorization by profession would have a small problem at the weapon traits. For example, if we went with...

• Traits
• Necromancer traits
• Soul Reaping traits
• Blood Rituals traits
• Main Hand Axe traits
• Etc
• Warrior traits
• Power traits
• Tactics traits
• Main Hand Axe traits
• Etc

We would have a conflict - "Main Hand Axe traits" would actually merge traits from two different professions. I think we could have a different category tree, in order to both solve that and allow us to categorize through profession and through weapons:

• Traits
• Traits by profession
• Necromancer traits
• Soul Reaping traits
• Blood Rituals traits
• Necromancer main hand axe traits
• Etc
• Traits by weapon
• Main hand axe traits
• Necromancer main hand axe traits
• Etc

If you people like that format, we would still have two things to settle:
1.Would you people rather have...

• Traits
• Traits by profession
• Necromancer traits
• Necromancer main hand axe traits
• Necromancer off hand axe traits

Or...

• Traits
• Traits by profession
• Necromancer traits
• Necromancer axe traits
• Necromancer main hand axe traits
• Necromancer off hand axe traits

?
2.Common traits may be an issue. It appears that some traits are shared between some professions, but not all - for example, the trait Vitality is shared between warriors and necromancers, but elementalists cannot use it. I guess we could make a "Common traits" category and list those there, but I would rather just list them within each profession. Those articles would be within multiple categories (which is something I would rather avoid), but that's the most informative way of listing them I can think about. Missed this. I had already come up with a basic, straight-forward system which you have already listed. If this is going to be an issue, I will hold off contribs for now.
The most specific approach to a category tree would be:
• Traits
• Traits by profession
• Necromancer traits
• Necromancer main hand axe traits
• Necromancer off hand axe traits
General -> Profession -> Specific Weapon -> Trait
Each main-hand/off-hand weapon has it's own line, so there is no need for a General Weapon category once separated into professions.
As with traits such as Vitality, there is no way to use a common category unless they fall under all professions. Look at Minor Intelligence. I see no reason not to place a category for each trait line that the Minor Intelligence trait uses. It's neither redundant, nor cumbersome. — Gares 15:45, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
I agree, that's what I would like to do as well. I'm concerned about having too many categories per page (example), but I don't think that will be an issue with the shared traits (for now, at least). Erasculio 15:54, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Do we really need something where a certain specific weapon category might only link to a couple of (or zero) articles - since we don't know if every weapon would have its own trait? If you guys are hoping to make it easier to look for things, it seems as though the registry would wind up being larger than the information it leads to. My solution would be to scrub the whole idea altogether, but then we need 'some' kind of categorization don't we? Then, the only solution I can think of to 'populate' the categories would be to categorize each profession's trait line, and then just have a single category for weapons. With any tree structure, it is best to sort to the most basic leaf node. This is the way the categorization scheme is designed. In this particular case, it makes searching and any specific mass editing easier than just a general weapons category. It's actually taught as good practice (see Binary tree or any of my old CS data structure notebooks :P). You are right though that there will be times where there is a single entry (see some skill categories), but we are striving for the specific. — Gares 18:09, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Sortkeys[edit]

It would be better for sortkeys to be a whole word instead of just a letter. For example, giving :Category:Warrior shield traits and :Category:Warrior main hand sword traits a sortkey of "S" doesn't sort "sword" and "shield" alphabetically, while sortkeys of "sword" and "shield" would.

Also, including "off hand" and "main hand" in the sortkey would alphabetise :Category:Warrior main hand sword traits and :Category:Warrior off hand sword traits properly. In this case, the sortkey should be something like "Sword main hand" and "Sword off hand", to sort them alphabetically in order of weapon then hand. pling User Pling sig.png 18:45, 31 August 2010 (UTC)
