Candidate for deletion[edit]

template with external links to a foreign government pointing out something obscure that could be a bullet point on one page.

— ‎Chieftain Alex, 24 May 2015 09:54

I suppose that "foreign government" is a matter of perspective. On the NA servers where most players are from the United States, they would not consider it a "foreign government", but others would. Therefore, I've found a similar link from a NGO that should be acceptable.

I do not consider password security to be "something obscure" considering the ongoing problems that I and others have had with gold sellers spamming chat using hacked accounts and the like. Why do you? I feel that the simplest way to prevent this scourge should be displayed prominently, where appropriate, not hidden as "a bullet point on one page". However, I'd like to hear from others before I restore it to:

That's still only three pages. A template for three pages is overkill. Also, gold sellers rarely "hack" accounts - there's no way they could steal enough accounts to keep themselves going through all the bans. They're buying accounts, because enough people are stupid enough to actually pay for their services that they make really good profits off of this. The next time you report one, look at the account name: if it's gibberish, then it's probably not stolen. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 12:19, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Ish, please clarify if you are saying (1) inclusion would be OK if it were not done with a template, (2) you agree with Alex, that the entire thing is a bad idea, or (3) something else entirely? ~ 1Maven (talk) 18:27, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Any page outside of ArenaNet's domain for password recommendations is outside the scope of the wiki. Recommendations for different passwords between applications don't really "fit" with the topic on any of those pages, and honestly, it should be common sense that you don't use the same password for your game as for your email (same username 'n all). -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 15:43, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
The domain for password recommendations is ArenaNet's. It's been my unfortunate experience that "common sense" is quite uncommon, especially when it comes to password security. For examples see 2014 Worst Passwords ~ 1Maven (talk) 18:27, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

"It is recommended that the password you choose to use to login to Guild Wars 2 is different to the password that you use to access your emails externally with. " is still off topic

Is there anything that you'd consider on topic? ~ 1Maven (talk) 21:22, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Let's look at the content of your three candidate pages then:
  • Login screen - an article about which buttons are available on the first window you see. Password entry field is present in the image however not being able to change it from this window means the advice would be out of place.
  • Account - an article about the, largely, ingame features of a guild wars 2 account. Very small section pointing to edit account as the main article for that section. Again any password advice is out of place.
  • Edit account - an article about the guild wars 2 site where you change your account settings. Best candidate out of the three for password related advice. Does the password information belong above the article content, before even the TOC? No. If anywhere, it would go under the "Change password" bullet point beneath "Edit Profile (My Account)".
Out of interest, where precisely does ANet link to the US gov site? -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 21:48, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
I seem to be missing something. The A*net link that I am referring to is https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/70455643-Choosing-a-Unique-Password. How do you get from there to the NSA? My interpretation of what you are saying is that you are OK with this issue being mentioned on Edit account. Is that correct? ~ 1Maven (talk) 22:30, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Unless that page is localised for US users, that link doesn't link to the US gov site. Let ANet deal with password security. Here is my proposed revision.-Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 23:04, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Apparently, I am alone in my level of concern for password security. Despite the considerable evidence supporting my position, no one else has chosen to comment. Therefore, your singular addition to Edit account, buried though it may be at the end of the article, meets the current needs of the community. Please move this template with the discussion to my name space rather then simply deleting it. ~ 1Maven (talk) 01:38, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
You can move pages yourself - only anonymous users don't get that action. And yes, you probably are a bit outspoken on this. If people care about their security, they'll already have a strong password; if they don't, then it's unlikely that any amount of warnings will change that. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.png 02:40, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Is it possible to move a Template into user space and have it still behave like a Template and not simple another user page? If so, how? ~ 1Maven (talk) 05:15, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
{{User:1Maven/random subpage template|unnamed parameter 1|unnamed parameter 2|n1 = named parameter 1...}}. Yes, there is no difference apart from you have to specify the prefix (i.e. "User:") b/c curly braces default to template namespace. -Chieftain AlexUser Chieftain Alex sig.png 10:00, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
