My Talk Page Guidelines & Etceteras

I call them "Guidelines" instead of "Rules" because I'm not going to enforce anything. I just hope you will follow the guidelines out of respect and common courtesy.

The Guidelines

  • Please be respectful.
  • If you can't say something nice, don't say it.
  • Please don't use profanity. It only makes you look like a vulgar, uncivilized, and uneducated idiot; and it really doesn't do anyone any good.

The Etceteras

  • Please feel free to just say hello or leave random messages or comments.
  • I admittedly need all the help I can get, so please do offer suggestions, help, and positive criticism.

Hellos & Heyas[edit]

Stopping in and saying hi! Always good to see new faces. Mat Cauthorn, The Botanist 17:19, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Hey thanks! I wondered if I should even bother with a user page on the GW2 wiki since the game isn't even out yet, but I figured what the hay. Nice to hear from you! Silmalel 03:41, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Image name[edit]

Hi. When you upload an image to the wiki, please make sure to prefix its name with "User Silmalel". For example, the last one you uploaded should be named "File:User Silmalel Elite Canthan Elementalist.png". Thanks. Chriskang 14:32, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I goofed on that one. Just forgot to put the prefix in there. I was used to the Guild Wars Wiki, which does that for you. These are the first images I have uploaded to the Guild Wars 2 Wiki. Silmalel 15:39, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Grrrr, I screwed up the name of another image that I uploaded...TWICE! I'm an idiot. I marked my screw ups for deletion, and got it correct the third time. Silmalel 16:12, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

tagging[edit]

Whenever you upload an image, it is always good idea to tag them appropriately. For instance, if you are uploading on for your userspace, use {{user image|silmalel}}. If it is a GW1 image, use {{GW1 image}}. If it an anet image of any other type, use the anet template. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 15:10, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm still learning the ways and means of wiki. How do I tag it? In the comments section? On the Guild Wars Wiki all you have to do is click on the appropriate radio button and it tags it for you. Is there any way for me to correct what I've uploaded? Silmalel 15:39, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
You can edit it like you edit on talk pages and save that way. Ariyen 04:32, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Signature[edit]

Hi there.

Please edit your signature to include a link to your user page or talk page. If you have any questions on how to do this, please ask me and I'll be happy to assist you.

Thanks! User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 19:52, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Uh, I though the signature was linked to my user page, and the pic was linked to my talk page. Did I screw something up? Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 20:35, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
no everything is fine (I checked) --The Holy Dragons 20:39, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah... I think it was this and possibly similar edits which left "signatures" that got my attention. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 13:40, 23 September 2010 (UTC)
I see. Yeah, I think for some reason I had the box in my preferences checked that says, "treat signature as wiki text" but I didn't have anything but "Silmalel" in there in plain text. Then I actually worked on my signature and got it all fixed up. It was my goof. I think you posted right as I was getting my signature code put together, so we got crossed mojoed and, well, at least our heads didn't start popping off. Creating userboxes[edit]

While there is nothing wrong with the format of your newly created userboxes {{User Indiana}}, {{User Findlay Graduate}}, and {{User Duke Graduate}}, they look like objects that really should be in your userspace. Remember, we try to keep personal things out of main space, you should move your templates to your userspace. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 04:59, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Ok, thanks for letting me know. But could you tell me how to move them? I'm not really sure how to move a page. I'll look and see if I can figure it out. I messed up the links to the category pages on the Findlay and Duke userboxes, but ran out of time trying to fix them, so I left them for today. Somehow I got one category correct and messed up the second two. I'm such a genius. Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 12:20, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
I think I managed to get everything I had in public space marked for deletion or moved. Sorry for the mess. I was following the pattern that I saw for other userboxes which have a template page and a category page. Thanks again for the advice. Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 13:17, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
As per images, only Guild Wars 2-related or GW2W-related formatting and userbox templates go into Main Space, whereas more personalised templates go into User Space. :) - Infinite - talk 13:23, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Sorry about the late reply, I had gone to bed ;). Anyways, it looks like you found out how to move an article, keep up the good work, cheers! Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 14:00, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your help, guys. I really do appreciate it. If I have questions in the future, do you mind if I leave my questions on your talk pages? I'd rather not make another mess for you all to have to clean up after me. :-) Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 14:06, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Lol, ask away! Also, if you don't make messes and mistakes, how will you ever learn? Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 14:08, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Of course. As you might be curious to know, Venom and I are both GW2W Helpers and are always here to answer questions and aid on projects. :) - Infinite - talk 14:10, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Broken user page[edit]

Hey again, just me. I'm here to offer some assistance if you would like it. You have a line of code on your userpage that reads <div align="center">. I think this may be what is causing your userpage to be broken (small letters in the tooolboxes, shifted fonts, etc.) I was wondering what you wanted to center. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 13:59, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Is it my main User Page? I checked it in Firefox 3, Firefox 4beta, Explorer 9beta (64-bit), Explorer 9beta (32-bit), and I don't see where the page is broken. Am I just missing it? Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 14:21, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
I see where that line of code is on the User Page editor. It is supposed to center the table where all the userboxes are located. It isn't broken in any of my browsers though. Is there a better way to center the table so the page doesn't look broken to other people? If there is, then I would definitely appreciate your assistance. I'm a self-admitted wiki n00b. Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 14:27, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
It's just a thought, but could it possibly be that my computer screen is 16:9 widescreen? I might simply have made the table too wide for a standard 4:3 monitor. I can fix that by removing a column of the table. I'll give it a try and then check it on my other comp, which has a 4:3 resolution screen. Things that look great on a widescreen monitor get smooshed on a standard monitor. I've had that problem once before. Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 14:33, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
It's not a huge deal, but this is what I'm talking about.User Venom20 - Silmalel page.jpg. Top is from your userpage and bottom is from your talk page. Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 14:51, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Oh, I see what you mean. I have no idea. If you know what would be causing that, then I would greatly appreciate help in fixing it. I went ahead and rearranged the table and shortened it to 5 columns instead of 6 columns wide. Hopefully that will help the page look better for people with standard resolution screens. Maybe that wasn't a problem after all, but it does look better in my desktop comp's 4:3 screen. As I was looking through the code I also came across a missing </tr> in the table at the end of one of the rows and fixed that. Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 14:58, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Lol, ok, I got it. It was the line of code you initially pointed out. I was missing the </div> after the table. That should take care of it. Thanks again for pointing that out to me. I'm such a dork. ;-P Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 15:02, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Heh, no worries. I had a similar broken page while I was testing my character template. It took me months (literally) to find the broken code. Now I'm scared to touch it in fear that I'm going to break it again. The userpage looks good again, sidescrolling isn't so much a problem on userpages, so you don't really have to worry about fixing it for 4:3 people. I'm sure my page looks horrible on a 16:9. I like your colour scheme, good job Venom20 User Venom20-icon-0602-sm-black.png 15:23, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Actually, your page looks pretty awesome in 16:9 res. I like how you built it by piecing together templates instead of having all the code on the main page. And I definitely like the curved edges & solid black background. That might be something for me to try out in the future...but perhaps the distant future. :-) Thanks again for your help today. Much appreciated! Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 15:52, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
I guess the distant future isn't too far away after all! I managed to make some templates and piece my main page together. Fun stuff! Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 17:33, 23 December 2010 (UTC)

Image clean-up[edit]

Hey Silmalel, I'm going through images (cleaning, updating licensing and fixing naming issues) and noticed one of your old images was orphaned: :File:User Silmalel Elite Kurzick Elementalist.PNG. I've marked it for deletion in a few days; if you plan on using it, please just take the deletion tag off of it and mark it with {{not orphaned}} for now.

I also noticed that your signature image is using an extension that doesn't comply with our image formatting standards. I didn't want to move it and break your signature, but if you could move the image File:User Silmalel SigPic3.png to File:User Silmalel SigPic3.png (there is a move tab at the top of that page) and update your signature to match, it would be appreciate. Thanks! — Rari User Rari sig.png 15:15, 18 August 2012 (UTC)

Rari, I made the change. Thanks for catching it and letting me know about it. Was it the extension being all caps that was the problem? Silmalel User Silmalel SigPic3.png 17:10, 19 August 2012 (UTC)
