Thoughts About GW2[edit]

"I think it'll be a huge hit and draw new players to the world of guild wars. Although it's like 2 years until the release i couldn't be more exited." - Me, 5 years ago.

Considering how long ago I said the above words, I'm really happy to say that I still feel the same way now. Even though I sort of forgot about GW2 for a while, the three betas, the stress tests and release date have rekindled those feeling. I waited five years, instead of two, and I think I'm more ready for it now than ever. Especially considering the game is ready for us.

I love this game to bits, and it will probably be the only game I'm playing for the next years. Likewise, Guild Wars was the only game I played seriously for several years. I have a feeling the whole experience of Guild Wars 2 will spark up that feeling of being 15 years old, coming home from school, starting up GW and helping friends with quests, or doing some PvP with guild mates, etc. Only this time it will be university studies that will be pushed aside for a few moments for some cooking, or jumping puzzles or why not even a few games of structured PvP.

I love how much the game has changed, and evolved, from Guild Wars. Yet, to me, still gives the same feeling. After a few years of waiting, and growing apart from Guild Wars, I planned to just play the sequel because I played the prequel. Sort of as an homage to my old gaming self, to continue what I had started all those years ago. But, an event changed that and this is the story about that event:

Running towards the final boss in the Boreas Seabed mission in GW was one of my favourite moments in the game. The feeling of coming around the corner only to face a giant petrified sea, with a giant squid-looking boss (can't remember his name) knocking me down and spawning squidlings, is one of the first moments that really stuck with me from my 6 year old GW experience. I died a few times on my first try, but everytime I got rezzed by my teammates and continued to fight the beast. I fired my newly acquired Barrage elite skill and he finally surrendered to our power. It was one of the more defining moments in my Guild Wars career.

That very same feeling struck me when I, in the first of the BWEs, came in to a small village in the Diessa Plateu, when a giant ogre came walking towards me and raised his foot in the air. I dodge-roll to the left, behind a house, and think about what I just saw. The feeling hits me.. I feel fifteen again. I feel motivated, excited and, most of all, hopeful. I race around the house and come out in a wave of people trying to best this beast with everyone giving everything to get this giant down. He stomps, people fly back. "Holy shit, it's knocking people down.." I fire a barrage of arrows before being knocked over, and flung back, myself, and in to downed state. The people around me revives and I'm back up. Fire arrows through flame walls, lynxes returning downed and people having a blast all around me. When the beast finally goes down, nostalgia strikes. I basically replayed that Guild Wars mission in an event in Guild Wars 2. This time, however, as a different race, in a different location and (probably, you never know) with different people. Yet.. The feeling was still the same.

It was after this that I decided I will play GW2 with dedication, and not just as an homage. I know I will love the game, no matter how it plays out, and I know it will bring me hours and hours of joy and excitement, frustration and, at some point, sadness.

My races[edit]

  • My first char will probably be a "Sylvarian" ranger. Named Moe Szyzlak like my ranger i have now.
  • Then i will make an Asuran guardian. Which will be my secondary (i hope.)
  • My third char will be an engineer of some sort. Named "Something Something".

"i hopefully wont make any charr characters.. cause i don't rly like 'em..." - Me, 5 years ago.

Played a charr ranger in the first beta... Sorry 15-year old me!

zz[edit]
