A bit of backstory[edit]
The crystals slowly hummed as the machine channeled ever more energy through them.
“Interesting. The matrix shouldn’t be able to remain stable at such high power levels. There must be some other stabilizing factor at work.”
“How?”
“I’m not sure. Perhaps the crystals’ resonances lined up to exponentially increase the overall capacity? What do you think mr. Golem?”
The robotic servant simply stood in silence, it’s main power core pulsating lazily.
“Yes, yes, you are right. If the crystal harmonics had lined up, we should have seen it in the energy signature. But the readings don’t lie. They are absorbing far more power than they should.”
“Yes, but how?”
“I don’t know! Any suggestions mr. Golem?”
Silence.
“Oh yes, ‘because that’s how it works’, that’s very helpful, thank you.”
The small Asuran engineer paced back and forth in front of the crystal energy converter.
“How does it work? How, how, how, HOW? That’s the eternal question. How do things work? How come they act the way they do and not differently? How do the crystals not overload? How am I supposed to work with all this INSUFFERABLE RACKET?!”
The noise had always been in the background. Occasional crashes, explosions or sounds of something heavy falling down, accentuated by the odd scream. But now, the noises had grown louder and more frequent.
“Blasted adventurers! Can’t a scientist work on his projects in peace around here?! Mr. Golem! Pack up, we’re going to see what’s causing all that bloody noise.”
Shadows flickered along the underground corridors, accompanied by incessant chattering. Haxx was riding on the shoulder of mr. Golem as it made its way purposefully through the tunnels of the lab. The light coming from the golem’s main power core illuminated the hallway, revealing the many traps set off by careless adventurers and the fewer, but far nastier traps set off by the careful ones.
“Why do these adventurer types insist on trying to interrupt my work? It’s not like what I’m doing is dangerous.”
“Well, there was that business with the pocket dimension creator.”
“What? Oh come on, that was one time! And a ten percent chance of catastrophic, dimension shattering failure is perfectly within acceptable safety parameters. Besides, it was imperative: I was running out of shelf space. Isn’t that right mr. Golem?”
The mechanical servant continued to walk silently.
“See? He agrees. Imperative.”
“They might not like the doomsday device either.”
“What, the atmospheric igniter? Are you kidding? That was just a doodle, something to take my mind off of my actual research. Besides, if people don’t want you building doomsday devices, then what’s the point in being a scientist?”
The arguing continued as the golem walked on. Haxx didn't have a split personality as such. It was simply that, while other Asura continuously argued with each other, he had one day decided that it would be more efficient to cut out the middle man and started arguing with himself.
“What’s this? They made it past the Ten Ton Ball of Fun? These are some stubborn people.”
A large spherical rock imbedded into the wall at the end of a sloping hallway indicated yet another anti-intrusion measure that had been set off. An arm sticking out from under the boulder indicated that not all of the intruders had been lucky enough to make it past.
“Hmm? What’s this?”
Haxx jumped down from mr. Golem’s shoulder and held a up light to the limb of the luckless trespasser. Without warning, it jerked up and started clawing blindly at the Asura engineer
“Undead? UNDEAD?! In MY bloody lab? I think NOT! Mr. Golem, we’re going back.”
“What about the ones that got away?”
“The Friendly Flamethrower defenses can handle them. I am going to find out who or what is behind this. Sending undead abominations into the private laboratory of a humble and well-intentioned scientist? The nerve!”
“Humble?”
“It’s not my fault the rest of the world doesn’t seem to realize my genius on their own.”
“Right.”
The arguing continued as the Asuran engineer made its way out of his lab, off to join the fight against the Elder Dragon responsible for invading his privacy.
