A little bit of backstory[edit]

“Water, young one. Never underestimate the power of water.”

The young girl sat on her knees and looked up at her tutor. The hydromancer, now far too old and weary for the toil of battle was quite happy with his new position as the girl’s teacher. The girl’s parents were nobility after all, and when they discovered their daughter had the gift of magic, they paid handsomely to ensure she would be well versed in the elemental arts. His room wasn’t the most luxurious, but it provided him with all he needed. He had hot meals every day, a warm bed every night and the mansion’s library held quite an impressive amount of volumes on a variety of subjects.

The mage slid back in his chair, enjoying the warmth of the fire that kept away the cold night air.

“Many a mage will tell you that water is the weakest of the elements. They will say that fire is more powerful, air deadlier and earth stronger. But they are wrong. Water can quench the most powerful flame, trick the deadliest lightning and wear away the strongest stone. First impressions can be deceiving. You should never dismiss something as inferior just because at first glance it seems less powerful.”

The girl looked on in silent wonder as her teacher conjured up the different elements. Small flames, shards of ice, pebbles and sparks danced through the room, heeding the mage’s every gesture like a chorus directed by its conductor.

“Water is both life and death. No living thing can survive without it, but few things can be more devastating. The same water that waters the fields could easily wash away villages or even submerge continents.

Remember this Sarah: fire is powerful, but it is wild and passionate and can easily rage out of control. Lightning is deadly, but it is chaotic and unpredictable. Stone is strong and unyielding, but also static and unchanging. Water can be fluent, adaptable, ever changing, but also strong, ordered and latticed. Water can be softer than silk or sharper than knives. In water, there is power.”

The old mage sighed and closed his eyes. To the girl, the room seemed to become slightly gloomier as the dancing pebbles, flames, sparks and ice crystals vanished.

“It is getting late Sarah, and this old man is tired. Go to bed. I’ll show you more tomorrow.”

Reluctantly, the girl got up, curtsied and walked towards the door. Behind her, she heard a soft snore coming from the slumped figure of her teacher. Slipping through the door and the hallways as quietly as possible, she made her way to her room and climbed into the large canopy bed. She looked at the circlet lying on the nightstand. Cold vapors drifted from the crystal imbedded into the jewel. A water gem. For in water, she thought, as she drifted into sleep, there is power.
